I have a Dell 15z 5523 and since I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 my internet connections have been very slow to connect. I was repeatedly getting a "limited connectivity" message with no internet access. I have spent probably ten hours trying to correct this problem and it seems to be widespread with Windows 8.1 and Intel wlan cards. My current card is a Intel Centrino N2230. I have tried every solution I could find and none of them have completely corrected the problem.
So far these are things I have tried.
unchecked the power management box to allow windows to turn off the adapter to save power
delete and reinstall latest drivers right from intel website
tried the Microsoft driver
setup intel proset to manage my wireless connections instead of windows
installed the latest bluetooth intel drivers and bluetooth is turned off in case it is interfering with the wifi
Ran several internet/network troubleshooters but they do not find any problems
disabled firewall and antivirus protection
After all of this every time I open the laptop lid I have to wait 1-2 minutes before I can open a website. The wifi shows connected almost immediately but I am unable to use it for 1-2 minutes. After I am able to finally use it it seems stable. I read somewhere that switching to a Qualcomm Atheros Wlan wifi/bluetooth combo card seems to correct all of these problems. I would like to buy on to try out but there are so many of them I do not know which one will fit my 15Z and have both wifi and bluetooth capabilities. My router runs on wireless N. Thanks for any help.
