G-Omaha's *** 8790 Review - 2nd Machine ***

Thread Starter
I am currently setting up all of the "stuff" that I need to start the review tomorrow. I ordered a new machine on the evening of May 5th and received a tracking number on May 14th. The delivery should be on Monday, May 17th (UPS 2 Day Air).

I may from time to time refer to the review that I accomplished on my original machine. That review can be found at: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=18658

Users G-Omaha and Go-Omaha are the same person. Most reviews posted will be accomplished by Go-Omaha.

I hope that this review will be helpful. Please feel free to provide comments and anything that you would wish that I include in the the review.

Come on, G!!!! I can't wait to read your review. Lay it on us!!
Agreed, read your previous review, and will read your next. And thanks for posting transit times. I just found out that sager was only 30 minutes from me, but no biggie. I've seen tha pc torque guys go to bat for people. But in this world of instant gratification, two weeks ... seems like forever

New Machine Has Arrived

Actually it arrived about an hour and half ago. I have loaded all of the Windows updates, installed my Spy Ware preferences, and ETrust anti virus. Now am loading the machine from the DVDs that I created earlier. The Office and other MS Products; afterwhich, I will need to do the Win Xp and Office updates over and over again.

I have the same screen and I have to say this screen is way clearer than the wxga screen. I think the glossy surface plays an important role for it's clarity but boy does it looks stunning. I own the 17 powerbook and the sager 8790 and let me tell you, everyone who looked at the two screen side by side, suprisingly love the wsxga more than the wxga. Don't let the glossy surface fool you and turn you away because this is one of the best looking LCD screen I've ever layed eyes on. I also have the apple cinema display 20' with the same resolution and the glossy on the sager helps the screen looks better.

I just got a new one as well. TWO stuck pixels. One on top of the other. a purpleish color, very annoying as they are together and makes it look bigger and thus more noticable.

bigbadbns,

Wow .. it seems to me that you like the 8790 machine very much at this time.
How's about the dead/stuck pixel(s) ?

AaronC7,

Sorry to hear about the 2 stuck pixels. It is strange that one is on top of the other. Where are they located ? 5 stuck pixels apart is different from 2 stuck pixels together. Perhaps you should talk to your sale advisor first to see if you can return it for a replacement ?

No dead/stuck pixel. ran pixel test and found none

Finally, everything is loaded and updated

It took a long time; however, everything went well. I personally don't like the way that Command & Conquer of Generals (Game) configures itself. It was a real pain because I have Win-RAR and don't have Win-Zip.

Anyway, I have installed everything, accomplished a CHKDSK/R (Talk about long running) and a couple of Defrags on the HDD (Disk-keeper home). Now, I am going to sit back and rest/reflect (actually have a beer or two). I'll post my "first impressions" either later tonight or tomorrow morning. So far I only have a couple of "bitches and groans"; however they are very much petty.

Initil Impressions

This is a real nice looking machine and it is superfast.

The LCD appears to be defect free. I have yet to run the LCD test and really look hard with a magnifying glass; however, believe that I won't find any defects.

The Dual 60GB 7,200 RPM RAID-0 HDDs are much faster then the Dual 80GB 5,400 RAID-0 HDDs that were on my original machine. Very obvious speed difference.

The fan on this unit works like others have reported. After the unit is turned on, there is a loud "Burst" as the fans turn on for the first time. My old machine did not "Burst"; but rather slowly cycled up. The FN+F10 to toggle the fans from nornal to turbo mode works well. This machine, even while in turbo mode is much quiter than the old unit when the fans "kicked in" to turbo mode.

All three fan ports on the unit are intake. On my old unit the CPU fan was exhausting air. I now notice a slight exhaust of hot air through the 7-in-1 reader slots.

There are a couple of real warm spots and one very hot spot on the laptop. The very hot spot is on the base of the LCD housing starting near the middle (where the three lights are) and extending to the right for about 3 to 4 inches. The warm spots are on the top edges of the touchpad, and the right wrist rest area. The face of the DVD/CD unit get a bit warm when this device is in use for an extnded period of time.

The new 4x DVD writer is much quiter than the 2x-R only unit that was in my old configuration. No jets taking off when using the DVD. I have tested all media types (but not all speeds) and they all seem to work well.

Did I say that the LCD is absolutely beautiful? The WSXGA+ is a bit smaller than I expected; however, with everything so clear and sharp, I have no problem reading anything; nor, do I suffer from eye strain because of this.

The battery included with the unit was 99% charged upon receipt. My original unit was about 78% charged.

The temperature appears to remain in the mid/high 40C range. At times, I have observed lower 50C; however, I have not yet begun testing or game playing in ernest. I suspect the temperatures will raise to higher levels as I accomplish these activities.

I have been "cursed" with machine "pauses"; however, after observing that the HDD light was continually on, I have determined that the defrag software is running in the background with high priority. I will need to reset those settings because It's not what I want to happen.

I have turned the touchpad tapping off while typing and have set the "resume" to the slowest setting. No longer experience the bouncy cursor and "lost" text.

WiFi worked right away and has not posed any problems. On my old unit, it was a real pain and never did work at an acceptable level. Receive signal is 39db or better and it is able to see two other WiFi setups that were conflicting with the precious configuration. (one on channel 6 and the other on channel 11). I am using channel 9 at the current time as the Microwave does not interfere with the communications. I was able to download 7.6GB of MP-3's (1,902 files) in less than 53 minutes. This was a bit faster than what I could do with the old configuration even with "turbo mode" enabled.

The built in Camera on this unit appears to be a different one than was included on the old unit. This camera is a lot brighter; however, appears to be a little bit less responsive (easier to blur movements). The camera, coupled with the built in microphone, make for excellant video conferencing.

Well, off to testing some more....
Awesome, looking forward to see the benchmarks
post #17 of 217

WSXGA+ Screen Update

Well, I have completed the Monitor test and looked real close using a magnifying glass to find dead, stuck, and misfiring pixels. At first I thought I had a lot of dead pixels on the red screen. Turned out to be very small peices of ash from the cigarette that I was smoking.

NO DEFECTS AT ALL!!!

Also there is no banding or bleeding that I can see. AND.... There are no "white" rims/edges around the screen. All in all, it's real sweet. I like the super glossy effect - it appears to make everything much clearer and cleaner.

It appears as if the side-to-side and top-to-bottom viewing angles are much better for this screen than they were for the WXGA+ screens. While not Wide Viewing Angle (WVA), it is real close.

G, I'm happy that you've gotten squared away w/ a great machine. You've busted your butt helping people out here on the boards (lots more patience than I've had ). I think it's great you've now got a machine worth bragging about.

Now, if you'd only trade me 8790s, I'll be completely happy...
