G-Omaha's *** 8790 Review - 2nd Machine *** - Page 10

Stand by issues

I've had this machine for well over 12 months myself, and due to the very impressive performance a colegue also baught the exact same machine.

However, both of us are suffering the same issue and it started from day 1 of purchase.

When the laptop is left on, and with power saving modes set to stand-by after X amount of time (either battery or mains powered) the machine will successfully go into stand-by mode. However, Now that the machine has shut itself off, it no longer likes to turn itself back on.

When trying to reboot the machine the bois lights flicker and the (Sexy) blue power/web button lights all come one on initially and then nothing..... Fans and DVD drive operate as normal but the machine doesnt start up. The only option i found to fix this was to leave the laptop to sit in battery powered mode and let the battery drain to completely dead. Then leave the machine pluged into the mains power suply till full charged and then power on the machine for asuccessful boot.

I put up with this cause it didnt happen all that often and only happened when it slipped my mind to ensure the machine didnt stand-by.

So thats compaint #1 of a very short complaint list.

But now i think theres something broken, I was running a PC game in quite intense settings the other day and after a few hours (4 at least) i got scrambled graphics, The machine was extremly hot to touch and couldnt get to the Windows operations to shut down the machine so i had to force power down with the power button. I then let the machine cool, rebooted and played again in a hope that maybe it was a once off graphic problem. But sure enough 30min later same thing, Force power down and now nothing...

The machine wont boot up. The battery charges, the fans operate, the DVD drive spins but no boot. Not even the Bios beep sounds.

Has anyone ever had any same issues?? it seems funny that both mine and a coleague's machines are the same. Bad batch maybe?

Any tips on the no booting?? have i fried my Graphics chips?

Try physically removing the battery and then power the machine up. Also get MobileMeter to determine the internal temperatures.

Have you ever cleaned out the machine since you (and your buddy) have had it? These machines need monthly dust "blow outs" and then yearly complete cleanings to remove the dust buildup in the Heat "sinks".

Are you using anything to adjust the GPU speeds (Over/under clocking)? Also which Video drivers and Bios do you have. Some of reported similiar standby issues in the past that were resolved by updating the BIOS/Vidoe Drivers. Noteable to some complains was "radlinker?".

nope, all setings are factory, drivers/bios are factory. The laptop has been a work PC up until late, it hasnt needed (I have been too lazy) to update it.

but i will try that.

I think i read in the thread that you posted links to drivers, im not sure how current they would be, but i'll do some digging for them a little later on.

BTW: you sure you dont have a forum stalking issue?? this reply was fast, i was expecting a day or 2 at least.

Ever hear of e-mail alerts? It really takes the "stalking" out of "stalking" so to speak....

Now wheres the fun in stalking, if your not stalking?

I wish i wasnt at work right now. I really gotta get this machine working again.

G's stalking in his own thread Just be happy that someone was "home" when you needed help. Hopefully you haven't fried anything~ definitely open the unit up and clean it out. You & your friend'll both want to peruse this 8790 Support section and specifically read the Artifacting threads to see what you're up against being an owner of these fast, but finicky, machines.

The stalking comment was of a humourous nature suppose to commend him on his reply speed. The

But back on topic..

Tried to boot with no battery, Same issue. Cleaned the system out (Not that there wasn't much dust at all) and nothing.

Cant update BIOS or drivers cause nothing boots at all.

The system is still under warrantly so i'll be talking it back to PoP and getting them to take a look.

But yeah, i think i might also mention the fact that the capture card on my machine hasnt worked from day 1, so while its there maybe they can look at that too.

I just have one question to those that are having problems with thier 8790's, do you use it everyday for everything? I ask this because I've had my 8790 for about 22 months now and it still runs great. It was my main gaming machine for about a year until I upgraded my desktop, and now i use it for homework and to game on when i go home.

I just find it kind of odd that some people are having the same problems with thier units. I have had problems before, like a HDD failed on me about 2 weeks before Sagers warrenty was up (thank god I bought an extened warrenty tho), I had a messed up stand-by that I fixed by upgradeing the drivers, and every now and then when i try to wake it from stand by all i get is a blank screen, which is fixed by a hard reset.

Used mine everyday at home, brought it to work, used it, took it home, used it. Left it on all night. Woke up, repeated pattern. Since that's too much, a Dell 9300 now sits in its place here at work and the 8790 sits at home. So it's duty has been cut by quite a bit.

Nice to hear that you've been problem-free for the most part. Wish I could say the same. I went into this thinking I'd be saying what you're saying; problem is, it didn't exactly work out like I'd imagined.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr............

Well, I bypassed my Philips warranty and RMA'd the drive directly to Hitachi. I received the replacement drive yesterday. It appears to be a brand new drive with a "reconditioned" sticker "halfway" applied to it. Manufacture date was APR 06. I have installed it and am now testing. It appears as if Mobmeter causes the system to Hang at times after the 2nd drive (now non-Raid confiuration) has been installed.

BTW: The Sager manual expressely states that if you have two HDDs installed that the Cable Select should be enabled on both drivers - HOWEVER, when I initially received by Laptop Drive 0 was set to Master (no Jumpers) and Drive 1 was set to Cable Select. Had a hard time trying to find the smaller 2mm shunts and finally settle on emulating the same settings as was originally establed. This works without problems (so far).

Hitachi was a bit of a pain to deal with. They are real real picky about how you package the old drive and will void the RMA if it not packed exactly as they specified - Just a word of warning so that other take these instructions seriously.

Temp Updates After Applying AS5 and System Cleaning

OK, it's been a week or so and now the temperatures are:

Light Load - Between 35C and 42C depending on the room temps (68F - 78F) on normal fans and 26F - 33F with Max Fans activated.

Extreme Load - Very stable 53/54C on normal fans and down to 49/50C with Max Fans activated.

HDD #0 - 46C
HDD #1 - 47C (Has the Swap File).

Under Extreme Load and High HDD usage, the HDD temps get up in the 53/54C range - slightly lower (but not much) when Max Fans are employed.

Normally fans turn off at 35C and turn on (with a big burst) at 51C. The fan speeds change every degree or so until they turn off or the temperature onve again increases.

If the machine's cooling system is moving air properly, you should be able to observe a 8/10C drop going from an Extreme Load to a light load without the Max Fans being activated in about 60 Seconds. I "eye balled" the clock and was getting results in the 55/65 Second range for temp drops between 7 and 10C. Normal "light load" temperatures should be realized after about 2 1/2 minutes (approximate). HDD temperature recovery will take a bit longer (15+ Minutes) for the tests that I conducted. When the HDDs are hot - so are the left wristrest and touch-pad areas. When the GPU is hot so is the area in the F4/F5 4/5 key areas on the keyboard.

no, up until this day i had not installed 1 game on this machine... I installed and played world of warcraft for about 3 hours before my issue occured.

Before that it was strictly a work machine. Coding, photoshop and 3D animation (Yes intense rendering was done) without any issues..... but yes, you've explained the stand by issues to be exactly what i have.

Yet to take the machine to PoP for warrently claim. Im in sydney Aus, so its a diff company than you in the US may need to deal with. Will keep updated on outcome though

Changed the GPU settings again - I guess "Gaming is still in the picture"

New setting for the GPU. 405 - 222. It appears to be stable and results in about a 3C temp difference (increase) when accomplishing intense graphics. For some odd reason, the graphics displayed by VLC (DVD from ISOs) appears to be a bit better with these settings.

Now, I only tested this for about 30 minutes and my son (after he has finished playing games) will let me know of any improvements (said the 216/118 setings totally s***** - you can fill in the *****).

If you are emulating these setting and still have problems, try adjusting the memory speed (last one) up or down one setting at a time until it works (or not). I found that a variance of 10 in the settings resulted in the difference between usable/unusable/and working settings.

Good Bye and Thanks For All The Help, etc....

It has now been two years since I purchased my machine from PCT. Unfortunately, they are no longer in the "Sales Business" and I find that I am no longer in the "Support Business".

I express great gratitude to all of the people that have helped me overcome issues that I have had with this machine and also to those that have provided some entertainment value (aka flamming).

For the time being, I have resolved to vacate this forum and focus my attentions elsewhere.

Good luck to all.

Gary

G, I saw your resolve in the other PCT-not-selling thread that you were finished. I can't say that I'm not disappointed to hear that. I consider you to be the first in line for helping others w/ the D87P model. I try, but my technical expertise leaves a lot to be desired.

Bummer that PCT quitting sales has prompted you to fold up shop here, too, but I wish you the best. Although PCT runs the forums, they aren't the forums. All of us that've bought from PCT and various places are the ones that make this place exist, so don't feel that you have to stay away just because PCT is focusing on web-based options. You'll always be welcome here w/ the rest of us plebes

Whatever you do, I wish you the best. Hope to see you around on occasion. Don't let your son game your 8790 into the ground
