BurnIt Test Results

I ran five concurrent BurnIt tests. During the time of the tests the temperature was constantly between 58C and 59C. Never could get it to go higher. Both CPUs were pegged at close to 100 Percent.

I kicked the fans to high speed (FN+F10) and the temperature slowly dropped to 50C. It is now 37C, the lowest that I have ever seen for an 8790. My old unit never went lower than 40C.

How's about the dead/stuck pixel(s) ?

AaronC7,

Sorry to hear about the 2 stuck pixels. It is strange that one is on top of the other. Where are they located ? 5 stuck pixels apart is different from 2 stuck pixels together. Perhaps you should talk to your sale advisor first to see if you can return it for a replacement ?
If you divided the screen into 4 quadrants, they are both stacked on each other in about the middle of the upper left quadrant. I thought about returning and trying again, but then you get shipping costs, and the price in general of the 8790 has went up since i got this one, im not sure what I'll do. They are 'stuck' in a purplish color, when you have a white background, but if the blackground is black or some other dark color they are not visible. On blue background they appear blackish, is this normal?

Battery Test Results

Well I got exacty 60 Minutes on battery power.

I powered the machine down. Unplugged the poswr cord and then turned the machine on.

After the machine booted, I saw that the Camera and the WiFi had been disabled. I powered the WiFi Off and then back on (FN+F12) and was able to get the internet connection again.

I haven't done anything with the Camera and it still appears to be off after return to AC Power.

I played a DVD with maximum screen brightness and Volume for this test. The right side palm rest got almost as hot as the left side palm rest. That position cooresponds to the front of the battery. This is an 8 cell battery.

Now that the battery has been fully discharged, I am in the process of charging it for the first time. I will be using the computer while it is charging.

USB Floppy Disk Drive

I plugged in the USB Floppy and Windows recognized the new hardware. After I formatted a disk, I accomplished a "safely remove hardware", selected the Floppy and then unplugged it when windows said it was OK to do so. I was pleasantly suprised that I did not get a BSD. On my first machine, the BSD was a guaranteed event if I attempted to unplug the floppy while the machine was running.

The floppy is working properly - this is good news.

Drivers

I am testing everything "as it came out of the box". I did not and yet have not installed or updated any drivers. This is a real plus.

Speakers

Well, I finally have found something that was better on the old machine than this new one. The speaker volume, while stil good for a laptop, is a bit less that what I remembered of the previous unit. Now I did use a subwoofer on that for a while and that may be the difference.

TV Tuner

This time everything installed without a hitch. Guess you need to know that COX Cable is NTSC-HRC. Simply selected this and scanned the channels. Everything was OK; however, channel 117 appeared on the active list and I had to deselect it. The TV video is much sharper and less grainy/snowy than I remember on the old system.

I "fiddled" with this for about a half hour or so and am mostly satisified. I have not tried using the S-Video/Audio in yet or really any recording at all. I need to get my hands on a few Codexs, if my memory serves me well, so that I can have more recording options.

Now, I have finally found something that is almost useless. That is the "Time Shift" function. It works, however, the sound is overamplified and the video is real bad - like it was a 320x160 resolution or less (maybe it is). Anyway, this is something that I don't think that I will be using as it is very very bad!!!! Yep, that's how bad it is....

New 8790's appear to have a different Clevo Model Number - D87P

I thought that the original 8790 had a D870P model number. Maybe someone like FriedToast could look at the underside of their unit and let us know. Clevos also now affixes their name on the NOTEBOOK label. I wonder if that means that their new plant is finally 100 percent operational?

Factory GPU Settings

I downloaded Powerstrip to see what the GPU setting are for this machine.

Adam stated, in his review of the 8790, that the GPU settings were 415/280. I found mine to be a bit more conservative at 405/270. These settings are depicted as Engine/Memory.

I wonder if they lowered the setting because of the increased resolution? Who knows...

Not sure what you mean?? SiSandra reported it as: Imaging Device: BisonCam, USB2.0

After I rebooted again, it appears as if the camera is again turned on. It works and the pictures, while not "fantastic" are more than adequate for it's purpose. It is better than the camera that was installed on my old machine.
