G-Omaha's *** 8790 Review - 2nd Machine *** - Page 11

I think most of us are feeling a little abandoned/betrayed by PCTorque. They've been a great company and I was getting ready to buy my third laptop from them. I was looking at the 5950 this time, but... Well...

It was a real blow to find a company you had come to trust had switched business completely. Good luck with whatever your doing now, G-omaha, and thanks for all your help over the last couple of years. Hope to see you around sometime.

I'm still "trolling" from time to time. Feel free to PM me and I will respond -- well eventually.

Dang G-Omaha, sorry to see ya leave, but as you said there's not much left here. So why not pick another brand and tell us all about it? It seems a lot of us 8790 owners have moved on to other models and brands.

Dell
Hypersonic, its still sager
Alienware (I hear they've got some decent machines)
Acer?
IBM

Are there any brands that interest you to buy from but not necesssarily support forum wise?

My intent, when I purchased the 8790 was to have a machine for at least 4 years before upgrading. That intent remains firm and so far am on track to keep it that long or longer (still using my 3060 that's now about 6 years old and it's still hold up fine - just getting a bit dim).

In a couple of years, I'll be going through these actions again. I have generally been recommending Dell's for the "normal" laptop user. Great service and good price for the performance - even if they are normally not very well suited to gaming. Also their warranty work turn-a-round is very good and you can get one repaired and/or replaced almost anywhere.

I wish I could get the same life out of mine. I actually bought my 8790 about the same time G bought his first one and it was a great machine for about the first 20 months...then problems began to set in. I've cleaned out the cooling system religiously every 2 months and I'm still having horrible heat issues. I can't really effectively game anymore because of the good ole triangle artifact problem now with just about every game I try. Even just surfing the web the heat becomes too much to bear and often the system shuts down on its own. The case has developed some very nasty and unsightly stress cracks..one of which is threatening to become a stress fissure...heh. And finally the DvD drive now works when it wants to..not when I need it too. So for this reason I have decided to retire my 8790. I loved it while it was in it's prime, but I'm very dismayed at how quickly it went downhill over a 20 month period give or take a couple of months.

I think there is a subtle issue of quality here that I'm not at all pleased with. Sagers it seems are built a little like rock stars...they are designed to play hard, kick ass, and then burn out rather quickly soonafter. I'm in the soonafter phase now. I feel like my old buddy here should be sitting at some home for geriatric laptops at the tender young age of just over 2...which just doesn't seem right at all. This is why I'm a little leery of ordering another Sager at this point, and why I decided to go Alienware m9700 for my next one....yeah I know its practically a Sager...but it's not put together like a Sager...and that's what I think is the heart of this...Sager/Clevo and the off brand manufacturers/distributors seem to be doing a rather substandard job of assembly and design. I've seen it lurking here reading many complaints for Sager owners, not just about the now geriatric 8790's but also in people getting a littled pissed about the newer lines not being "up to par" in design as well.

Oh well...I will probably keep using this old thing until it finally catches fire (which seems more and more likely every hour I use it) and at that point I will take it out to the backyard...put it on my son's inflatable Spongebob raft and push it into the pool...the whole time playing bagpipes in the background.

It's been fun and rewarding being a Sager fan/user..but time has come to move on for me to, and I'm not ready to recommit to the product line given what I see out my current Lappy.

Hitachi Replacement HDD Bytes the Dust

Damn - the replacement driver that I received for the one I RMA'd in April died already. It was manufactured in Mar 06 and didn't even last four months. I'll need to get a hold of them and really complain when I have cooled down a bit(Quality????).

I have reinstalled the O/S on the old system's HDD and this time I bite the bullet and expressed a RAID-1 (Image) installation. I have ordered an overnight replacement for the failed drive so that I can put this matter to rest - today. I should have gone the RAID-1 route earlier because of all the software that I have installed and the real PAIN and time required for a reinstallation (Over 16 Hours to get everything updated - so far, and I am not fully done with all of the updates - Grrrrrr......)

Now we can see how easy it will be to migrate from a single disc RAID-1 installation to a dual disk upgrade. Hope that this will not cause me to have to reinstall everything because I am out out time and temperment for this.

Also updated the video drivers to the latest Mobility Catalist from ATI and all things appear to be going well - still need to use ATITools to downclock from the defaults; but, that too is working well.

2nd Drive added to The RAID-1 array

From looks of things all is working well. It took about 45 minutes to mirror to the new drive.

Oddly enough, the performance of the machine was actually enhanced rather than be degraded a bit as I was thinking that it might.

Now to RMA to bad drive.

2 month update?

RMA'd drive was replaced and it is now in an External USB/1394 enclosure.

The RAID-1 is unfortunately a bit slower than a Non-raided drive for some reason when I create large audio video files.

Other than my Camera "coming and going" as in, WINBlows fails to recognize it most of the times, everything appears to be working well.

NEC-6500A ODD Replaced

I finally replaced the NEC ODD. It no longer supported new media at other than 4x speed and was becoming a bit of a pain because of that.

I installed a Panasonic UJ-85J-B slot loader and it is much more friendly to various High Speed DVD Media. The drive is reported as a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-85JS by it's BIOS.

So far all's well and as a side benefit, this drive reads some of the burned DVD media that the NEC would not.

Purchased the ODD for about $80 (Shipping Included) from ZipZoomFly and it was received in three days even though the shipping stated FedEx 5-7 Days Option.

Everything is still going strong; however, I think that it might be time for another major cleaning.

I did notice a "trait" that I must overcome. When cleaning the bottom of the fans DO NOT blow the "gunk" into the fans; rather use a small vacuum and "suck up" the mess. By blowing that "Gunk" into the fans, it just tends to get caught in the "grid" and eventually will plug up the machine. So, Vacuum first, then use the air, and you will find that the machine is less likely to become clogged.

I'm still looking for the Thermal Pad that sits atop the GPU Memory (The white one that is about a quarter of af an inch (or more) thick so that I can replace that as well as the frag tape on the components located under the keyboard. Might need to start looking for a new keyboard as the lettering is starting to come off some of the keys - had this same problem with my older 3310V Sager a few years ago.

Happy Holidays to everyone,

Gary

Well, it was a nice ride. The 8790 has now been relaagated to part time use by my wife. I have replaved it with a decktop that provides everything that I originally wanted at a very affordable price.

Dual AMD Processors
2 GBs Memory
1TB+ (avail) HDD as RAID-5
250GB+(avail) HDD "System Disk" as RAID-1 (Mirrored)
Analog + HDTV Tuner
20" WSXGA LCD (With speakers)
Many USB 2.0 Ports
Many IEEE-1394 Ports
2 GigaByte Lan Connections

Have VISTA Ultimate as the O/S and am going thru "growing pains" trying to get all the "old" hardware to run properly in (Scanners, etc...)

Much better machine than the 8790, quiter, and cooler.

sorry for the odd bump. i hope your 8790 enjoys it's semi-retirement. iirc, this review thread was the first thread i ever read on nbf.

Ok, it's been 7 years since I started this.

The computer is still going strong. I lent it to a friend that had purchased an ASUS K72JK-X1 that is being RMA'd because of a faulty LCD cable (had to "detune" the video so that it would not artifact). I also still have that really old 3363V and am rebuilding it (HDD + Memory) so that another friend can have a laptop without spending big (or even little) bucks.

Last impression on this beast is "damn, it's heavy, hot and loud".

The "detune" on the video was for the Sager and not the ASUS (a fine machine)....

Glad to see the ol' beast is still running, G! Mine was history long, long ago. But the 5760 replacement is still going strong. In fact, I had to pull it out of mothballs the day before yesterday as my desktop died. So I'm back on Sager smile.gif

I'm thinking I might order me up another Sager machine - always a pain to do over here in Japan, but... they make good stuff smile.gif

Don't go here much anymore. Hope that the tsunami (down south, I presume) did not effect you much. I finally retired my old V30 machine (loaner for others that "some one" dropped and then we could not fix). Sagers are, from my experience solid machines; however, they are a bit costly.
