aopen 1557 offered with 1.8 and 2 ghz dothan's on IBUYPOWER, also they got rid of the ati 9600 64 meg vid card for the ati 9700 128 meg card. Smart decision in my opinion. Hopefully abs will follow suit

Hmmm

Which one do you think would be better: the E or the CL series?

The Battalion E-turbo series.

It's nice to see this notebook updated with not only a 9700 Radeon, but a Dothan as well!

dothans are available on the CL (compal cl56) now too it seems

the E (aopen) seems to be thinner and lasts 5+ hours
post #7 of 114
Kinda weird that there's 50 difference to get a Dothan between the E and CL, then I saw that the CL comes with a faster proc to begin with, so the difference is more.

Either way, I can config either one within 25 dollars of each other. Question is ... which do I want ...

How long does the Compal last?

I'm not that interested in thinness as they're all within a few tenths of each other. I guess what it comes down to is battery lifee, screen quality (not knocking the Comal ), overall build and support.

I haven't been able to find where you'd find bios updates for the Compal, but I haven't considered the Acer either.

Would you suggest buying now from IBUYPOWER or waiting to see if ABS is selling a new line of laptops for the new chips from intel and ati?
well I looked over at some member photos of this laptop and there was 1 member who bought it barebones... the thermal designs inside the laptop appears to be pretty weak compared to the compal... the keyboard is the only thing between the actual innards

i opened up my compal and there is an aluminum cage inside it, so its very sturdy and no heat rises up at all anywhere on the top of the laptop...

only the bottom rear gets warm after a hour use...

Wow. That IS a pretty sexy laptop.

Anyone find any reviews on it? Rince, where'd you find the pic?

"Finally, the keyboard only supports 2 independent keypresses at the same time (more in simple sequential mode). Meaning, if you are playing a keyboard-driven game, and you have to intermittently press, say, arrow up, left, right, and space bar, it has a very high tendency to get stuck on one key."

that would bother me

"The air vent on the right hand side. The internals on this laptop get very hot when playing games or using 3D apps, and this very hot air gets pushed out the right side of the notebook. Not a huge problem if you are just using your keyboard or a gamepad, but if you are using a mouse on the right side of the notebook, it gets very uncomfortable. My hand actually got a rash-like red color on the left side from the hot air when using a mouse for 20 or 30 minutes."

i was going to buy the CL56 given the reviews here

however this E-series battalion is nice also (slightly smaller, lighter, longer battery, and colors!)

however how is the fan noise?

After reading the link, I'm probably still going to stick with the Compal. Waiting for them to email me back if they're getting a 1.7 Dothan version.
