Stealthvic's 5690 Review

Just got the 5690. I'll be doing a review in several posts as progress continues.
So far I've unpacked it and it's installing Win XP.

The packaging is great, it was well protected. Turned it on, checked BIOS, everything seems to work fine. Pics don't do justice, the 5690 looks amazing.
NO dead pixels! The UXGA screen looks un-freaking-believable. Thank GOD i opted for this option.
The fans are quiet while installing. So far so good! More to come including pics!

All drivers are installed. I also installed PowerDVD to see how good DVD playback is. I loaded up Matrix Revolutions, WOW, just wow. This UXGA screen is outta control. 1600x1200 is small but thats how I like it. Looks AWESOME.
I'm online and typing this message with the 5690, the only thing i noticed so far is the keyboard seems flaky, like its not solid, but more of the flexible kind. Thats ok.
After watching a DVD, surfing the net and installing drivers, the handrest isnt as hot as i expected it to be. I still have to load up some games later though.
So far this thing is AMAZING.
I forgot to specify my specs in the first post...

P4 3.0 ghz
Ati 9700 128mb
60gb 7200
wireless 802.11G
UXGA 1600x1200

MORE to come during the day

I'll have your children if you send that rig over my way

Thanks. I don't regret my decision with the 5690 one bit.
So far the best part is definately the screen. I mean you can barely see one single pixel, and the display is viewable from virtually any angle you look at it. I showed that feature to my IT administrator here in my law firm and she said "Wow.. thats weird." :-D
Fan wise, once in a while the loud fan will kick in for like half a second, doesnt bother me. The idle fan isn't loud at all. Then again my desktop computer is an Athlon with a Tornado fan so I am real happy with this. The total install, winxp, drivers, programs went flawlessly. This thing is blazing fast, can't wait to play games on it tonight when I get home.
I will later on post benchmarks, and review game quality and add pics. You won't be disappointed.

Game Performance

Amazing! Scored 3978 in 3dmark2k3 with 340 patch, with the latest Omega driver and NO overclocking. Thats 1000 points higher than my Athlon 2000xp, Radeon 9600xt, 768mb Ram desktop.

Played BF: Vietnam, WOW at 1600x1200 and details set to high it played real good! My desktop would be crawling.

Now installing Painkiller...

Ok, installed and played Painkiller. Runs REAL smooth at 1600x1200, VERY nice graphics.

I did notice one thing though. When the screen is real dark, there seems to be some light flooding in the top left part of the screen. It's just flooding out by 1.5 inches or so, with green light, not very noticeable under brighter colors. But does anyone have this problem? I can live with it, as long as it doesnt get any worse.

Well my 17" 1280*1024 princeton has same thing on the sides i can see it sometimes when the windows is still loading up(when the screen is really dark), i guess al lcds are same in that issue but it's nothing to worry about. But u say Green ?? i see only white in my screen in black color, maybe u see it green because of different viewing angle..donno

Yea today I have it at work, and at my desk which is well lit, I dont even see it anymore. I can only see it in a dark room with a black background on the LCD, and it does seem to appear green. As long as it doesnt get worse, I'm not worried

Anyway, continuing with the review, I have pictures today.

Here's the beast.

By the way, it's the first time I played painkiller, and this game is amazing! I played it late at night, and the sound effects, monster design and music gave me goosebumps when I was playing. HIGHLY recommended

Hi stealthvic

Thank you for the informations on your Notebook. Coul you run 3DMark01 tree of four times and check out, if the result is getting lower each time?

Im asking this, because i have a big problem with my Laptop (no sager ;-) ) clocking the processor down because it's getting to hot in intense aplications. CPUMark99 shows a drop from 187 to 160 points.

If i can give my Notebook back to the vendor i'm thinking of buying a Sager.

Would be great if you could check this out!

Traxx, I don't have 3dmark01 but after running 3dmark03 over and over, the score doesn't drop. I would assume the equivalent score in '01 would be somewhere in the 13,000s

sager 5690 performance

Stealthvic, could you run 3d mark 03 with the ac cord plugged in and then again with the battery. I would like to know if there is a performance drop. Thanks.

Maximus, when you unplug the AC, the laptop automatically goes into power save mode, and downclocks the Radeon. There should naturally be a big performance drop when running on battery

Continuing with my Review, today...DAY 2

More Benchmarks!

I just o/c'ed the Radeon 9700 to 526/325, and ran 3dmark2k3 TWICE to make sure no artifacts showed up, and I saw none. Got an amazing score of 4250 3dmarks, wow!! The card seemed cool too, the high power fan didn't even kick in.
Needless to say I couldnt be more happy with this beast, it completely exceeded my expectations

5690 performance

stealthvic do you know how much it down clocks the video card on the battery or about how much of a drop you get with 3d mark? I cant decide to go with the sager 5690 or the compal CL56, i want to do alot of mobile gaming so battery performance is important to me.
Powerloss on batter is about 30% from my experience.

3dmark 2001se 4x all of them over 13150...

Hope this helps

I got mine last friday!!!!
This notebook is the best i ever seen in Portugal!!!!!!!!
It Rules............
Even with a dual battery setup... i don't think you'll manage "a lot" of gaming with this machine (while under battery power). It's very power hungry and running 3d applications or games is badddddd news in terms of battery life.
I still don't understand why people want to buy a notebook to game with on a battery There is no such thing especially with today's games. You need a 9600 at least, and that sucks the hell out of your battery. Not to mention laptops downclock the system once they run on batteries.

Stealthvic,
I've had mine since 5/5 I actually noticed this yesterday when I rebooted after several hours of use. It was definately the first time it was there, and only noticable during boot up on the black background. It is not there today. It was on the bottom and both sides.

This was common on the the dell screens on the bottom. It never really got worse. I had an iXPS and it had it. On the dell screens it is apparent all of the time, especially on dvd playback when the black bar was at the bottom.

If you want more information on the issues with this problem and dell, search for leakage on the dell forum, it was real common but didn't seem to get worse. Like I said, mine is gone today???
