Sager Linux

I think we need to start our own distro. Like, base it off Gentoo since it seems to be the best one for us, and make it "Sager Linux" or something like that. It's just a crazy idea, but eh...

haha... it's a nice idea... perhaps a customized gentoo? it would probably be the easiest to make/maintain, since gentoo was designed to be source-based, making things easy to modify. When Promise releases their drivers, I'll be in on this project!

I don't really see much of a point. What I think would be more useful is making a Sager-geared Gentoo LiveCD with catalyst.

exactly what I meant... with sager customized logos and stuff!

Isn't Gentoo almost just a live CD itself? I've never done anything with it, but I was going to install it before I noticed the lack of an installer like Anaconda. Now that FC2 is out, I'm going to give it a try (once I get the DVD burner to work..having some issues in that department). I'm going to talk around a bit and see what goes into making a distro. If anyone here is on a distro team, knowledge of it would be great :-)

Gentoo comes as a livecd, but the livecd only creates a barebones setup; enough for you to install gentoo on your hard drive yourself. Not really suitable for everyday use.

If you're talking about a full-fledged livecd like knoppix or something, that's a different story... But I never really liked using a livecd as a full operating system; you can't change very much.

And its slooooooooooooooooow; CD-ROM I/O is way too slow compared to HD I/O.

So what all goes into making a custom distro beyond a modified kernel? Installer? The obvious graphics changes? What else?

I would imagine it being more complicated than we might think.
