The Dell's look cheap! - Page 4

Dells look cheap? Just look at an Alienware Area51M, it looks like something from Toys R Us!

actually i wouldnt mind the 8600s design if it didnt have that tacky blue lining. compared with my new compaq, the build quality is much more inferior too. like if i move the lcd back i feel like i would break it.

I agree, DELL looks cheap. But people first look to the performance then to the price. Aesthetics comes last. Therefore Dell is top brand in notebook sales.

I love mine. If you didn't like the blue, surely you could take the blue rim and the touchpad rim/buttons and spraypaint them with a metalic colour or something if you REALLY don't like it. Personally, I think it looks great and there is nothing wrong with the buld quality. Better than Toshiba's that I have owned, and about the same and my dads IBM, which looks pretty bad.

right now the dells look alright... they aren't the best but i think they may take a turn for the better looking at their new Inspiron 700m... blue base with white top and inside... looks sweet to me. I think my 9100 will need a paint job in a few year after my warranty is over...

Dells are cheap crap, every laptop I had, they were company bought so I had no say in the matter, I think you can even get one in cracker jack boxes now, they are like pop tarts with no icing, put it between two pieces of bread and you got a cheezy sandwich lol Alienware is the only way to go....

You said the 2 magic words: "company bought". Companies want plain, non-distracting equipment. Companies want you to do your job and not show off your great office setup to everyone else. Dell would rather sell PCs to companies. There is more profit for Dell in selling equipment leases to companies than selling to individuals. To maximize profits, Dell must use economies of scale and limit design changes to allow for reusability of parts.

Dell is selling home/home office machines as a courtesy to us - as a secondary business. If you want to customize your Dell, it will have to come from a third party supplier.

Exactly right. My dads company buy IBM laptops for way more than they need too, but they do because they have a more plain (and in my opinion boring) look, and have certain bios security features. They aare definately not destracting, and don't do much more than the word/email/internet/speadsheet that they were bought for.

Alienware, as the trix rabbit would say, is for kids

I have an 8600 and I like the way it looks, blue trim and all. Wouldn't mind doing the Indicator LED mod tho.

Yea but too bad Alienware 51m doesn't have a MR9800, it'll get smoked by a XPS or 9100.

I owned an Alienware 51m, sold it for 2500 after 5 months, bought it originally for 2750. The novelty of it all wore off because Alienware doesn't keep it's promise. I realized that there is no way that the current AW Area 51m 766 model will ever get another video card update from the 9700. I feel betrayed and lied to by Alienware's promise of upgradable video card technology. I just got a overpriced paint job with no possibility of upgrading from the 9700. I'm putting my money on Alienware coming out with a completely new gaming notebook and leaving the current user base out in the rain.

So I decided to use the Dell coupons to save me over 750 dollars off of a 9100 with MR9800, with the money left over I use another Dell coupon to get a 700m, 50% off of retail price. I got 2 laptops for the price of one.

My g/f has a 700m, looks sweet, blend of good looks and sexiness without being too loud.

alienware, if anything, looks cheap to me. notebooks, at least in my opinion, shouldn't be that colorful - makes me feel like im using an 8th grader's notebook. i want a notebook that looks classy.

I have to agree. If anyone purchases a 9100 or XPS with the MR9800 it will beat the Alienware in a heartbeat. Dells are cheaper but when it comes to Alienware they just sell the name and not the product.

Alienware Lappies

I have posted this somewhere on this site before but IMHO if you paid for an Alienware laptop you just got raped; and NO im not paying an extra GRAND for a colorful laptop (they look kinda queer to me). On another note I think the Voodoo PC laptops LOOK awesome but again im not bending over just for a brand name and they're prices made me laugh even more than AW. If I had an unlimited budget I would have went for the XPS EE, its alot of money but your getting some things I dont see very often in laptops (still on par with price of the "gaming" laptops probably). You could get a system with the exact same harware for alot less than those companies, guess that shows why these companies pay the big bucks for advertising....it actually works on some people

I completely agree. I don't like the Alienwares either. I don't understand why people think the the 8600/9100 aren't nice looking laptops. I think they beat their competition in the appearance aspect.

Your right about people buying things because of their looks. I wouldn't want my laptop to look like the Alienware . Just seems too.......wierd! Besides, the Dell have incredible specs (assuming you want them), and pretty well always have cheaper prices.

Go Dell!!! I love my 8600!!!!

Sorry I haven't read all the posts yet, so this may be invalid, but am I the only one here that thinks the 9200 looks good/classy yet looks like it may kick your *** if it had the chance?
