Pentium-M and DVI

I am looking for a Pentium-M based notebook with a DVI port (because I want to support an extended desktop for multi-media purposes) and the only notebook I can find that fits both criteria is the Acer Travelmate 8000. There must be others!!!! Does anyone know of any others????

FYI, You don't need a DVI connection to support an extended desktop.

As far as notebooks are concerned, the only notebooks I've ever found to support DVI was the Acer TravelMate 8000 series. I'm surprised more manufacturers don't implement DVI and just throw in an adapter, but I imagine it's probably a cost thing.

HP port replicators have DVI-D output connectors (based on their specs).

I want to avoid analog-digital conversion, such as with the VGA port, so does the port replicator have true digital streaming straight from the notebook, or does it simply convert the output signal from the notebook to digital via the DVI port on the port replicator?

Fry:
There is no analog to digital conversion since if the laptop supports DVI pass through, then the DVI is sent directly to the port in the replicator or docking station.

I've used IBM's, HP's, and currently a Dell M60 that all support DVI pass through. You need to check carefully, because some models do NOT support DVI pass through, for example, the IBM T41p and R50p support DVI pass through, but the T41 and R50 do not. Also, make sure you check on the supported resolutions because some do not support resolutions higher than 1280 X 1024. The IBM's only go up to 1280 X 1024. (Big complaint of mine.) The Dell and HP support up to 1600 X 1200.

The new Sony A series have DVI on their docking ports. It is a $350 option though. Just about the only DVI laptop I know of is the Sager 8790, which is a Clevo ODM design also sold by competitors (it is a large, destnote P4 type laptop).

How does the PCMCIA card relate to creating an extended desktop?

PCMCIA card for DVI extended display. Each can do two displays (one DVI one VGA) and if you have 2 PCMCIA slots, you can do 4 displays, not including your laptop screen and VGA/DVI out.

Thanks for the info everyone - I have one more question - The tech guy at work today said that signal loss using a VGA port is neglible (compared to a DVI port) and I wouldn’t notice the difference. Is that right? What is the degree of signal loss with a VGA port compared to a DVI-D?
Signal loss is only important if you are running a long cable. How far do you intend to run the video cable? The signal strength is dependent on your card, and the monitor. I have a 5meter or 15foot run on one of my DVI's and it's working well. If you're just using the supplied cables (either vga or dvi) that come with most monitors, they are about 2meters, and I've yet to hear anyone not having them work.
Standard VGA cables work ok up to 15-20 meters, and standard DVI cables up to 5-7.5 meters.

I dont think I've seen any Pentium M Banias or Dothan notebooks having DVI output.
Only P4 2.8-3.4 notebooks

Um, the one mentioned in this thread does --Acer 8000 series. (And also, some others such as the thinkpads and the Sony A series if you include the docks).
