What would you do? [Voodoo m:780 or Hypersonic GX7] - Page 2

so what exactly happens if you run a laptop with harddrives that arent supposed to be run "24/7" for this kind of time, perhaps a day or 2 at a time? Will they die off or something? I know in my desktop this must not be an issue, because i run all my computers 24/7 even an old 8gb hard drive i got out of a 533mhz emachines, i ran it for about 3 years straight (maybe it went down for a few days out of the year, whenever i rebooted every few weeks) before i upgraded it to a bigger one. Never had a hard drive crap out on me, even being ran like this. But i guess heat is an issue in laptops? So you cant do this... ? or what.

Also, im thinking about the hypersonic gx-7.. is the customer service good or what. As far as i can read, some people have had a bad experience with slow email responses. Well i emailed them a question at about 4pm and got a response about 1 hour later (today) But i did reply to it when i got it, and i did not get a reponse to that reply. So im not too sure what to think.. It was a quick response the first time, but i didnt get my answer the 2nd.

Keep in mind their operating hours as well. I believe their hours of operation during the week is 10am-5pm with 7pm on Fridays (or is it the other way around). There was a couple emails I had sent in the late afternoon that I didn't get an answer until the next morning. I have to also consider my time zone difference as well.

That aside, I have had good responses from customer service and sales. I have nothing to say about tech support yet, as I don't have dealings with them.

Honestly, I've never had really good dealings with "sales" in any company. And I don't really care.

Unless the sales people are the customer support people, it really doesn't matter. It seems to me that too high of a percentage of sales people don't know their products well enough.

That being said, I did get a response 24 hours later from Hypersonic and my questions were answered to my satisfaction.

I also called that day to follow up. There are some things (like paint color) that they offer that aren't on the list of things you can choose on the customize system page. I wanted to know how to deal with that. The rep answered my questions fine, but wasn't overly helpful or enthusiastic. He sounded like he was reading something else on the computer when I was talking to him.

We'll see. I'm buying the computer today. I've actually got both my systems (that I'm choosing from) up with the order button ready to hit send.... I'm just doing some last minute question asking and comparing. (Between the GX7 and The PCT Sager 8790. (see the thread in the Sager General forum)

The only negative on the GX7 is that I think it might take a little longer (getting custom paint). And it is about 7-10% more expensive. And I don't think it comes with any carrying case.

But there are so similar (and the companies seem so similar), it is just coming down to paint color, arctic silver, carrying cases, system binders and the sort.

I don't think I can go wrong. I'll post pictures when I get one.

I really do appreciate all your help here. Thanks.

BTW... since they have the "perfect pixel policy"... I wonder:

If I don't choose that policy, am I ASSURED to get one of the "non-perfect" screens? I mean, what do they do when they get a few bad pixels and can't send it to someone because of that guarantee? Send it to me?!? I'm assuming.

Basically, I'm thinking that the Company policy increases my chances for getting a imperfect screen. Whereas if they didn't offer that option, we'd all have an equal chance.

Boy. You are really having a hard time, and I thought I was having one.

Consider the dead pixel policy to be the same as your health care plan (or even insurance). I pay a lot of money each pay check for health care, but seldom use it. What would happen if I stopped my health care plan? Would I get sick a lot?

I wondered the same thing as you. My big issue. It is not a timely manner for me to ship my system back if I received a system with annoying dead pixels (to be honest, I didn't know these existed until I came to this forum researching my new laptop back in January). When individuals started getting their 8790s and there were cases of dead pixels, I became paranoid. I don't want to have to add two to three weeks of delivery time to getting a new system, not to mention paint time. So I wanted to be guaranteed.

Couple the dead pixel policy with the 72-hour burn-in, I added piece of mind back to my selection. At least there was a better chance what I was receiving was going to be functional.

I basically bought health insurance for my laptop.

Regarding the 24/7 drive:
Hypersonic offers the 40GB version of the Hitachi E7K60 still. From the detail text on their website, the 60GB is the standard 7K60.
