Compal CL56 or Asus M6N

Alright, plain and simple here. I've got it down to one or the other. Heard good and bad about both. If you were to go out and buy a laptop today which one would it be?

had the asus had a 9700 when i ordered my CL56 i mighta bought the asus... they make good stuff, i used to use alot of their motherboards etc

but then again from what i hear the 9700 being put in the asus is gonna be 64mb and not 128mb like the CL56, so that might lear me away

but tahts just me

I'm tyring to decide that too.

For me the big bonus for the M6N is the dual-battery, dual-HD options on the modular bay.

i'm also hesitating between these 2... but :

I don't need my video card to be 128 9700. The 64 9600 is enough for me.
and 2 big turnoffs of the compal for me are the erratic missing keystrokes people have reported, and the dead pixels, which seem more of a common thing than on the M6N

however the M6N is a little heavier I think.

by the way, why not the ZForce F2 or the g556 ? Thay both have decent graphics ?
who else got a dead pixel on their cl56?

i didnt get any or remember anyone else
I heard the g556 can be loud... a big turnoff for me.

Dunno about the zForce F2, the F3 seems to be another M6N clone tho.

I got a dead pixel.
really? wow i ordered 2 laptops with the same 15.1" screen (mitac 8335, and compal cl56) and no dead pixels for either time

http://www.dps.uk.com/freeware_DTP.htm

run that test...

it checks for dead/stuck/lit pixels across all spectrums

still just 1? or more?

Just 1. blue/red are dead. green is fine.

Zero on mine. Yeah, I still have it (for now...)

I like the specs for the Compal CL56, but to me it looks cheap. It's all plasticky with that tacky gizmo surrounding the keyboard.

I'd probably still pick the Compal over the Asus for now because of the M11. Function over form!
yes i prefer my laptops to be silver (the aopen1557 looks seksy)
i used to have the mitac8335 which was a beautiful looking laptop

in person the compalcl56 isnt cheap looking. ive kinda grown to its looks, although at first i didnt like it very much. the alumnum frame gives it a nice cool touch when u put ur lap down on the keyrest
and the blue, isnt really blue, its like a very dark blue, almost looks black sometimes

lets say the only gaming you do is CS, a little UT, Warcraft, and Halo. Would the ATI 9600 64MB be good enough and still be able to handle games a couple years from now?
You can get the 9700 already, Not only can you play what you mentioned but everything out, My friend sal has a thinkpad from his university and it has the radeon 7500, we play NFS underground, prince of persia, manhunt, Colin McCae rally 2004 on it without troubles, as long as you dont expect to play games that come out in a year on high settings and 60fps you will be fine. Th 9700 64 is a fine gpu
post #17 of 18
you get my pm about the wireless kb/m combo holywars? Also, if the part about stuck keys on the compal56 how is it fixed? rincewind: you said you just stuck it in as hard as possible... How exactly do you do this? Thanks,

Chris

u take off the faceplate using a flat head screwdriver

u unscew 2 screws hlding the keyboard in place

u disconnect the keyboard cable ribbon and reconnect it firmly

while u screw back the 2 srews holding it in place u firmly press down on the entire keyboard and hold it until its in place

put faceplate back and it fixed
