Quick question, how long do you believe the 9100 will be around in terms of usuability with such things as gaming,internet,etc..??? Do you think it can have a 4 year life or much less??

I don't see why it wouldn't have at least a four year life and from what I understand Dell is good at keeping their support going.

I think Desktop CPU systems will share long life since were not expecting booming performance differences with each new cpu liek we did in previous generations. unlike centrino systems which key feature touts mobility we all know batteries die out fairly quickly and eventually those meager 1.4-2.0ghz will become a bottle neck down the line.

the problem with the 9100 and xps is they socket 478 cpus they use. once everything goes LGA775, its EOL for us. either that or an expensive mobo makeover.

the form factor (physically) for the processors currently used in the 9100/XPS (Pentium4 with 478 pins) is end of life, the new procs will be a different physical format so they will not fit.

The problem isn't really the CPU - 3.4 ghz P4 will be fine for a while I think, we already have too much processing power for most things in comparison with other issues.

The main thing is graphics upgrades. If they put out more than one upgrade, we should be set for a few years

anyone know what the next video card will be for the xps/i9100, that will determine what will be the life of the machine. Right now this thing is more powerful than my desktop computer, but I have numerous options with my desktop that I don't have with the laptop. I've been reading the next iteration of ati's mobility will be a flavor of the X800, that would be nice as it would give this thing alot more life.
