Acer Ferrari 3200 Info

Some of this is going to be redundant, but I just got off the phone with a very helpful guy from Acer's sales line and thought I'd share what I learned with others out there considering the Acer Ferrari 3200.

1) The Ferrari (in the sales info guy's honest opinion) will not get over 4 hours of battery life. It should, however, have no trouble with 3+.

2) Both the HD and the RAM can be replaced without voiding the warranty. The warranty will not, however, cover the new HD and RAM (naturally).

3) The suggested retail price for the system is $1999. This was suprising, because of the 8 US merchants I have found selling it, at least 4 are selling it for more than $2000.

4) Contrary to what was being said previously (I heard the 15th of this month - two days ago), the Ferrari does not ship until the 25th. Curious again, as one of the websites I found lists the item as "In Stock." To quote the sales info guy, this is "highly doubtful." I suspect for reasons involving merchant-manufacturer relationships he cannot out-and-out call it BS.

5) Even if you order it the 25th, it might not arrive so quick. He said it is on backorder (I'm not sure if he meant for all merchants, in general, or what).

6) Almost half the inquiry calls they've received this week have been about (at least in part) the Ferrari 3200.

7) I'm getting one.

That's all. I hope it helps anyone looking for info on this system. I, myself, have all but decided on buying it. I just hope Buy.com offers it (which the sales guy also informed is more than likely as they are an official Acer retailer) - this is purely because I have a Buy.com visa and get 3% reward kickback.

If they don't have it by the 25th or their price isn't competitive enough, PCTorque here I come.

All of that's very good info, thanks! If the Sager equivalent of the Python D470 doesn't come out by June, it looks like I'll be getting one of these with a hard drive and some RAM.

Hmm...I really like the Ferrari 3200. *But*....I really need DVI-out (VGA in is already used on my monitor, don't want to switch cables back and forth). The 8006Lmi is almost exactly like the Ferrari 3200 but with a Dothan 2.0Ghz rather than the AMD 64 2.8Ghz, and it has DVI out. Plus no bright red paint job. =)

But, it costs $2699 rather than $1999!
bright red paint job is one of the reasons whyi'm getting it

yes, and if you were to put a silver laptop and a nice, shiny red laptop that just happened to have a ferrari emblemn on it next to each other, which one would a thief choose? not that cars have anything to do with laptops, but red cars are the most likely to get stolen, thus the insurance is very steep.

Although, if you carry a gun around with you at all times, then I guess people will stay away from you and your lappy.

thief? what are u talking about. If i was a thief i'd care less what color your laptop was, i'd jack it anyway, and take ur lunch money too.

But tomorrow's pasta day. P-p-p-please don't take me lunch money!

I suppose his (uh, .... .... I guess I should say, yours) is already on its way.

Can you guys read???

http://www.acer.com/APP/AKC/INTERNET...7?OpenDocument

Power:
Eight-cell lithium ion battery: up to 3.0 hours life depending on configuration and usage.

Up to 3 hours. That's it and it's official. Salesmen only care about selling, and if you ask them "will the ferrari 3200 offer 4hours of battery life?", they will reply "yeah! Sure! Even 200hours! Buy it!"...

I know some people will start screaming that "the new low voltage mobile Athlon 64 uses much less Watts than the previous Athlons" but here is a secret guys, there's a lot more to it than just Watts. Take Ati Mobility Radeon 9700 for example. The difference between full power settings and power saving settings is 10' of added battery life...

uses On the other hand, more Honda Accords and Ford Taurus are stolen because they are boring, plain cars that blend in. Cars that are more unusual are easier to spot

You're right there. If you think about it, it's only logical. If you steal a bright red Ferrari or Porsche, there's no hiding it. Steal a black Honda Civic and no one will even blink an eye. Only hypothetically, suppose you're the pawn broker/car dealer or the buyer of a used car or laptop. If someone shows up with an Accord (or in the case of the laptop, say a Dell or an IBM), you don't even ask why they're selling it. If someone shows up with a high-performace car (or laptop) in an flashy, attractive color, you're more likely to make inquiries.

In the end, I guess it all boils down to how careful the owner of anything is with his property. I think, perhaps owning a nicer looking laptop will necessarily make you treat it better. Let's face it most people who own (stock) Accords/Taurases/etc don't take *exceptional* care of them. On the other hand, how often do you see a Ferrari without a fresh coat of wax and a brilliant shine? If you were to own a shinny laptop like the Acer Ferrari (which, incidentally, has three coats of genuine Ferrari red paint and a layer of clear coat), you'd almost be forced to take better care of it (in regards to both protecting it from the elements/damage and theft) than if you owned your regular run of the mill black or gray laptop.

Just my two cents.

Acer just pushed the Ferrari 3200 shipping date back to the 24th of this month.

That's true. However, the same might not apply to laptops. A notebook is much easier to conceil after the pilfering than a car would. The Ferrari 3200 won't be eye catching inside a carrying case.

i dont understand why a color would make any difference. are you intending to leave it somewhere unattended?
being an expert thief myself, I must say that any colored laptop will most definitely pique my interest and voolaa! I'll be walking away with my new, colored laptop.
Thats just dumb, and makes no sense. Any laptop left unattended is at a risk being stolen no matter what color it is.

Once again, I must disagree. You walk into a cafe and see a Rolex sitting on the table. Although most people would give it to the manager, some people would quietly pocket it. however, if the watch is one of those crappy GAP ones, just about everyone is going to give it to the manager or just leave it where it is. Why? Because it's shi*ty looking and doesn't appear to have much value.
This applies to laptops. A thief is not going to have the time to sit down, click on start, select "my computer" and view the system information. The truth is he doesn't know what's under the hood. He's going to be looking for a system that appeals to him. If he sees a bland laptop, he'll be less prone to steal it.
Most thefts likely occur on a whim. It's not like you have people scouting around town for a laptop to filch. IF they see something that looks really cool, then they might take it. IF it's just a bland lappy, then it really doesn't have as great of a chance of being stolen.

And yes codex, you are another Einstein in the making. Of course any laptop is at risk of being stolen. In fact, everything is at risk of being stolen. Congrats! You just discovered a new property of nature. Admit it, a nice shiny red lappy, is much more at risk of being stolen that a bland grey one.
