Why would u leave your laptop unattended is what i'm trying to get outa you. Limiting your purchases based on your theories is retarded.
If you cant protect your property maybe you shouldnt buy it in the first place, haha.
I never said that you should limit your purchase because of the color of the lappy. In fact, I'm planning on ordering a red lappy. The point I've been trying to make the entire time is that a colored laptop will be more likely to be stolen than a bland one which basically means you have to be extra-careful. I don't know why you would ever leave your laptop unattended but things come up and you could always forget it.

Most thefts likely occur on a whim.
I don't know about where you live but in most places I have been in petty theft, pickpocketing etc is run by crime syndicates and much more organised than people think... I know with cars, they are stolen on an order basis - some guy makes an order for a BMW or whatever and they go out and steal it for them....

Brightly coloured lappie will probably be more likely to be targeted (this applies to all paint jobs I rekon) but mostly anything left lying around will get pilfered if there is a high turnover rate (eg. with cellphones)

I wasn't referring to cars. I didn't realize anyone would think that I meant that. It's obvious that anything as expensive as a car would usually be an organized theft. I was referring to things that might be left on a table that a thief wouldn't have trouble hiding. everything has a risk of being stolen, some things more than others. It's the thief who decides whether it's worth it and the color is a huge bonus on a laptop.
I understand you weren't talking about cars, I just mentioned it cos I know a guy who used to be in one of the car syndicates. But as I said earlier, syndicates cover all kinds of theft, from wallets to laptops, cellphones etc...

Hey, I was agreeing with you about the colours, lol!
FIRST OF ALL, this is a really stupid argument

with that being said, I must agree with codex.

If a theif saw two computers, they are both equally suseptible of being stolen. However, if the theif is SMART, then he would be wise not to take the red laptop because, being bright red, makes it stand out alot and if it goes missing, most people in that general area would notice it missing.
A thief probably would be more likely to steal a laptop that appears to be of higher value. What better way of saying "I'm very expensive and valuable" than a Ferrari red paint job and finish?

Of course, any laptop can be stolen if left unattended, so whether the paint job of the 3200 makes it more suseptible to being stolen is kind of a moot point. I'm not willing to test my luck in any case.

Sockman sumarizes the argument completely and correctly.
yghs, you should not have butted in. This is really not a stupid argument, what's stupid is the five seperate threads you made all on the same laptop (yes, I'm still annoyed by that) And you bring up another fact that supports my argument. Yes, due to its bright red color, the lappy will be more likely to capture the attention of anyone in its vicinity thus it's more likely to come to the attention of a prospective thief than an obsure-colored laptop that a thief would overlook.
In the end, as long as you keep a careful eye on your laptop at all times, it doesn't mean shi* what color it is.

Bad news...

Bad news. I just found out that the shipping date for the Ferrari 3200 was pushed back another two weeks.

how fast is the mobile 2800+ compare to the other mobile 64's
post #31 of 48
mobile 2800+ should be a little weaker than the dtrs, but maybe only a frame or 2 difference in gaming.

as for stealing a red laptop, id say if they were a graphite laptop and a glossy candle apple red laptop next to eachother id steal the graphite one, its just less noticable. if peopple are looking out for a bright red lappy its just easier to spot, but any laptop unguarded is likely to be stolen. my next lappy im ordering is going to be purple, wonder if alot of people would even steal that, purplephobes...

Isn't the 2800+ in the Ferrari a DTR version?
According to the user manual for the 3200 it's a "Mobile AMD Athlon 64".

(The user manual is available on Acer's global site here.)

No, it's a new ultra low voltage chip just released. They come in a 2800+ and 2700+ model. If they used a DTR they would surely use the 3400+ or wait for the 3700/3800+ version. I'd rather have the DTR (with its additional cache) myself, but Acer must have felt the slight increase in runtime was worth the, most probably, more noticeable decrease in performance. I'd love to have a 3200, but I think now is a really, really bad time to buy. So much new tech like DDR2, PCI Express, Socket 939, and lots of other great stuff is arriving later this year. We should get laptops with all the new stuff by Q1 next year. It will be worth the wait, this is going to be a major leap.
DDR2 isn't worth any wait, and won't be for quite a while:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15266

DDR 600 mghtz will be here well beforehand:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15853

I really wish that Rambus hadn't been ganged up on. They had 800 mghtz years ago.
DDR2 is only one thing among many to wait for. Besides, a 5% increase in performance is worthy IMO. Isn't DDR compatible in DDR2 slots anyway? There will also be the easily upgradable GPU's from NVidia and probably an answer from ATI. There will be PCI Express and new sockets from both AMD and Intel. There will be lots of new chip famlies and a new 802.11 variant twice as fast as "g". Bus speeds are looking to get big increases and dual channel memory will be commonplace. High res screens should become much cheaper and better as well. That's worth the wait.

I do agree that Rambus took the rape. It isn't that much more unstable and the frequencies better suited the processor designs.
iv seen it labeled as both on websites...i beleive it does have the new mobile thou. amd said one of there new mobile ones was coming out in an acer, so, all evidence points to yes, but you never know
post #38 of 48
DDR2 is not compatible with DDR slots:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1573
The PCI express and the new sockets are a different matter of course.

I have a friend with a rambus machine, got it just over two years ago. He games all the time, no problems ever with it.

One thing about waiting, in the computer arena anyways my friend, there will always be something better just around the corner, or so they'll tell you. Usually it is announced just after you take delivery on what you thought was cutting edge.
Revenant has a good point... suppose we all wait for 939-pin AMD64s. Chances are Intel ain't gonna sit back and watch AMD kick butt. So, Intel will probably have some cool must have about 6 months after AMDs... and then AMD will have another must have 6 months after that, and on and on...

So unless you have a specific application in mind that really needs the extra oomph, waiting is an eternal game.

Check out x86-secret.com
They have a review + benchmarks of the new 939-pin architecture.
Basically they show that clock for clock there is basically no performance gain for DDR2.
