"This is Malware"
Product seems to work well until you decide to uninstall. Then, you will be in a world of hurt. After you the uninstaller, you will be told to manually uninstall the remaining files. This is not easy, but with a little ingenuity, you'll figure it out. After I deleted the last one, my computer did some really crazy things with the desktop, the WinPatrol pop-up wouldn't go away, Scotty the dog was barking incessently and then it all stopped. I thought it was okay, then, but my Internet Explorer was corrupted, as was my Norton anti-virus and firewall software. I had to do a reformat of my hard drive. Use Spybot or Ad-aware, but stay away from this product

This was posted by someone on download.com about winpatrol. Have you had these problems Brain? I assume you haven't or else you wouldn't recomend it but I was just curious.

Ok I used it and got rid of some nasty memory hogs and some startup programs, but it didn't make the bootup any faster. I want to try TuneXP, but I am afraid of the same results as Jamaster over there.

i wouldnt be scared to use tuneXP....

im thinking the problem has something to do with the way i hacked explorer.exe

but again try at your own risk....

FYI 9 minutes left on the xp isntall...

step 2: download drivers

Ok well I tried it out anyway and it added 3 seconds onto my bootup speed. When the blue Windows is Starting up Screen comes up, that used to take 1 second or less now it takes about 10-11. I wonder why it didn't work? I will try out the other tweaks that come with and see what they do.

Jamaster how did you get your system to go so fast? That thing was a rocket lol

if you want real speed do the services tweak just follow my spread sheet listed earlier.
I did. The only thing different between ours is I do not have Print Spooler enabled. But do getting rid of services really help the bootup time? I got rid of atleast 20 and did not see much of an improvement in that category.

YES!!!!!

this is by far the best tweak, you are limiting the number of services that run during start up, hense... less time to boot up.

Hmm I played with tunnerxp last night and I did every thing but clear teh prefetch folder and it booted in like 20sec teh shutdown was realy slow so I took out the clear page file on shut down and it went back to normal. I can now start up and then shut down my system in like 45sec. I have not had any trouble with my menues being slow or anything like that.

Hmm, maybe I'll play with it again. I tried the Ultra-Fast bootup, but it didn't do anything... I'll try it again.

About winpatrol:
I've been using it since brain posted it... There's no reason in heck to get rid of it! I even have it on when playing games... it doesn't take much memory. Plus it helped me get rid of a few nasty viruses.. you don't even need to pay for plus, google can find the other stuff anyway!

Yhea its great for catching all that junk you did not even know was getting installed on your system. It will alert you when somthing is trying to hijack your homepage ( I hate it when that happens). I usually do not leave it running but I pull it up every now and then just to make sure nothing got by me.

yeah ive narrowed it down to the prefectch or a corrupted explorer.exe.

anyhow id assume this is an isolated incident and tune XP works fine for most users

i tweaked the hell out of it...

im beyond anal(insert DB comment here) when ti comes to my computer...

if there is a 35byte file somewhere that is not in use i want ti gone or it will bother me. if there is a process running that i dont need it has to go...

basically the major tweaks to getting an optimal system that runs fast are:

1) disable uneeded services (i ahve 11 running at start up)
2) disable unneeded start up programs(i have 0 programs run at startup)
3) updated drivers
4)reg hack.... go into your registry editor... search for "menushowdelay" it is set to 400 set it to 0

run adaware and spybot minimum of once per week.

i can reboot right now from clicking on "ok" to restart to back t my desktopw ith everythig loaded in under 35 seconds

How can you have zero programs running at startup? If nothing is running then how could it startup? Do you just mean you unchecked everything in your startup list under msconfig? How many programs do you actually have listed in your task manager after a fresh boot?
I also had no programs running at startup and only 11 services. Still 55 second boot and I couldn't scan anyhting with norton, it said it was hacked lol, so I had to have that starup so I have one program and 13 services
post #58 of 60
Maybe it's a bad driver. They delay boot times.
My specs are just like Jams! 11 Services and about 35sec to reboot.
