XPS is on the truck back to DELL

Well

After checking out the XPS something the other day just did me in within my 21 day period, I had installed Norton Antivirus 2004 and was running a virii scan, my battery was full and so I decided to lug the 10LB monster off with me to the garage so I could monitor its progress. Needless to say that the laptop last about 25 minutes doing the virus scran, so in other words, if your gonna use your CPU dont buy this thing.

Its heavy, draws way too much power and to me has gone beyond diminishing returns.

I currently have a IBM Thinkpad T42p 2373-KXU on order.

2.0 Ghz Pentium M 755
1GB of ram
4X DVD RW
60GB 7,200 RPM Drive
128 MB Fire GL T2

3,900.00

Should get the same performance, better battery

and only 1500 more. hehe

Huge difference is price too. And it's not a gaming notebook either.

Maybe you should lay blame on the Norton Antivirus software which has a reputation for being cpu intensive. Also are you sure you had a full charge? Maybe your battery is defective.

I love your reasoning, can you hear the sarcasm loud enough? I love my XPS. I only run my Norton when plugged in the wall. Also I carry an extra 16 cell battery too in case I need it when running on battery.

The XPS would perform better........ but I get your point about battery life, etc. You probably should have gone for the i8600 in that case.

The problem is obvious!

As for virus scanners, if you really need one, I recommend Symantec Anti Virus Corporate 8.1 or higher. You can set the priority to any level you want with minimal impact.

The 200x series of their products which includes anything with the word security or system works is pure rubbish, bloatware, etc. Most systems bog down with this POS like they have spyware running!

Cheers!

I'm with Planet Ed, Nod 32 all the way, minimum cpu load, maximum virus protection. Its the best out there.

Its one thing to have 1 1/2 hour battery life, its another to have 25 minutes.

Plus I dont do much gaming, The most demanding game I play is MVP baseball 2004

I do more C C++ compiling in Windows and Linux.

So I imagine the T42p will probrably be at least equivilant to the P4 3.4 in that area.

Plus the T42p is only 5 lbs and should get about 3 hours of battery running full bore on battery. If I allowed the power management to kick in it would probrably be closer to 5 hours.

The XPS was a good performer horsepower wise, but like I said it became a problem of dimnishing returns.

1. Heavy - Almost 10 lbs
2. WUXGA screen doesnt allow you to go to 1600x1450 or 1400xsomething without black bars
3. battery life with a demanding app is slim to none (25 minutes for me tops)

Agreed.

10 pounds is almost like carrying my little cousin around with me whereever i go. Scary thought

I love my iXPS. There is a screen issue I am working on getting resolved, but the performance is incredible. I only get around 2 hours battery life off one battery, but that's why I bought a 2nd one. I knew when I bought it that battery life was secondary due to its performance. It's not a "mobile" laptop and was never intended to be.

hey ed, i just installed nod32, however i noticed two new processes in the task manager, notifyalert.exe and nod32krn.exe, both continue to run even after i've killed the control pod window and disabled all of the automatic startup process associated with nod32, do you know how to kill all nod32 processes without having to do it manually in the task manager?

Is the battery life good enough to use during a day of college classes?

I.E. Using word to takes notes and such.
