The future of the 8500/8600/D800/M60 form factor

I know that Dell has hit a home run with the size of the 8500/8600/D800/M60 for the mobile desktop-replacement market. The fact that this form-factor has lasted this long has opened huge possibilities for upgrades to my 8 month old Dell M60. CPU, video, ram, hard drive, wireless, dvd writer upgrades are all possible to the latest and greatest. However, with the release of the iXPS/i9100 they released a rather large Ati 9700 video card but did not offer one in the Centrino notebooks listed above. My question for you guys is: Do you think Dell will be releasing any faster video cards for the 8500/8600/D800/M60 line before redesigning the internal parts of the motherboard making video upgrades impossible? If so, which card will come out next?

The question about the 9700 card has been debated many times here, and the general concensus is no. Most say the card is physically too big to fit in the laptop.

Yep, Wooster said it. Dell is incredibly unlikely to offer another video option in that form factor before it is phased out. But stranger things have happenned, so keep an eye out anyway, but keep in mind the chance is miniscule.

Well, the 9700 may be too big, but do you honestly see Dell releasing a new style of notebook before the 533Mhz FSB Centrino's ship about 6 months from now? I certainly don't. Furthermore, Dell's current Centrino line-up isn't offering a killer video solution to compete with others. At one point, the Centrino notebooks were offering the fastest video solutions which is not so anymore. Unfortunately, the 9100/iXPS is just too big and ugly in my opinion for Dell to hedge all its bets on. The demographic that wants killer video hardware with great battery life still exists and that is what led to the huge success of the 8500/8600/D800/m60. I guess that is why I was hoping that maybe another video card would make it into this style of system.

Nope, I can't see a new system release before Alviso either.... but that is apparently in September, only 3 months away. I cannot see Dell upgrading the video to fill in that gap in the meantime....

3 months? you mean 4 right? well I agree and when they do it COULD be a the same form factor but nothing is 100% but one can only hope

Too bad I have to get a computer before September.

Bummer. Well you've got plenty of time to scope out the best one between now and then at least. Alternatively you could hire one for a little while until you can order the one you really want.

The best laptop card available at the moment is the ATI MR9700.

Oh OK. Well we have businesses (and of course Uni's) over here that will hire out laptops and computers to customers. Its an alternative for people who can't afford them or who want to stay on the bleeding edge without actually having to buy a new system every 2 months. I am pretty sure there must be some places over there that would do it too.......

I'd never heard of that, but its not something I have looked into. There could be a whole laptop-renting industry out there, and I would know about it.
