Speed Patch Fix for Windows XP SP1 [03-31-03]

It seem many Windows XP users notice that when they upgraded Windows XP to SP1 (Service Pack 1), some application (mostly) run much slower than before using SP1 especially on Pentium 4 system. I found this post on Hardocp.com .

As reported previously, a bug in Windows XP SP1 may cause some programs to launch 10 times slower because of a change in memory management in SP1 from XP retail.
<neowin.net>

Symptoms:
After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), your programs may take as much as ten times as long to start.
Cause:
This problem may occur if the programs you run frequently allocate and deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP.

You can get the patch fix from either microsoft website or here ...

So what types of applications (by name) are effected by this? I haven't noticed any slowdowns... of course, it has been a while since I had a pre-SP1 XP setup.

Does anyone give an example or two of the applications? I don't want to apply patches simply because they are there - that is DEADLY when Microsoft is in the equation.

I believe all applications are effected by SP1 problem especially an application which need to allocate a large amount of ram for a buffer such as IE, Mozilla, Adobe Photoshop,....
I decided to try this patch this morning since I saw I can uninstall this patch if I need to. Well... it seem Adobe Photoshop7 run a bit faster, didn't feel any with Mozilla (I never use IE).... But I feel a big different with Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2, it seem it run much much faster.... before I patch my system everytime I drop a new big movie file(over 100MB) to the storyboard, the system will pause for about 30-45sec depended on how large it is..... now I can work with the new file almost instantly.....

Patches...

I'll wait for a comprehensive SP2. There are many bugs still flying around in XP but SP2 will be targeted to kill a majority of them. I would recommend doing a re-installation of OS and Sp1, Sp2, DX9.0 and drivers in that order.

If SP2 comes before summer it will be great...ample time to redo the system

Yea, I'm waiting for SP2 also... I saw several site post SP2 beta for download, but I'm not feel brave enough to try it... lol.... Now my system is a test bed, I will wait until SP2 come out and re-install the whole system... usually I do a fresh installation every 4 month for the maximum performance...
I believe when SP2 come out, you don't need to install SP1 before install SP2 since I saw SP2-beta file size is almost 180MB.... but I might be wrong....

I agree, I think many of us are awaiting SP2... I think I'll take Guru's advice and re-format/re-install OS, XP1 and XP2 - actually, isn't the XP that came with my 8887 XP1 already? I forgot... I have a WinXP Pro w/ XP1 CD, I'll just use that as the install, then I only have to install SP2...

Well I set my restore points today and gave it a shot. I've noticed some improvement in load times in most applications, even in the o.s. upon startup. Nothing bad has happened as a result from it so far.

No immediately noticeable improvement for me. Nothing increases my Win Explorer and Internet Explorer performance like disabling all my shares and turning off McAfee 6.0 System Scan. What a performance hog.

Give AVG a try, it's not such a hog at all (unless it's scanning all your files, of course).

Plus it is free: www.grisoft.com

PS: I also installed the fix, and have not noticed anything GOOD or BAD (which is GOOD in my book!) I'll give Ulead DVD another go and see if that picks up performance-wise.

Trying it. Nice, and my kind of interface (KISS method). We'll see how it flies.

I take back that I said this update had good results! All of a sudden all my audio programs started opening real slow after a week of having the update installed. So I used system restore and now everything is normal agin. Beware!

I, too, have had this update applied, and have not noticed anything odd - or anything improving in performance ('course, it's a damn fast machine right off, so I may not notice any benefits).

So it is a wash for me.
