What wireless broadband router to purchase

Thread Starter
Just got my new I8600, whats the best wireless broadband router to buy, also I have a wuxga sharp screen with little light leakage on the bottom. Should I have the screen replace,. the first 8600 they sent me had dead pixels. Its noticable when the screen is black, maybe just request a samsung replacement screen, still in my 21 days for return.
Everything else working fine. Oh I got 512 ram 60 gig 7200k harddrive and wuxga sharp and 1.7

Thanks

Don't let all the complaining done here make you feel like you have to send it back. Personally I say try and use it for a few days without focusing on it to much. If it doesn't really matter after that then your ok. I have the same thing (also an otherwise perfect WUXGA) but it is not bad enough for me to take the risk of getting an even worse one back, not to mention I kind of need the thing right now (you'll hear the argument "I paid $X grand for this thing I want it perfect" but you have to decide for yourself, in this case perfection is subjective).

I can only see it on mine when the screen is absolutely black at the bottom (i.e. when watching a DVD). If in two and a half years I have a vacation or something where I won't need it for work and that leakage is still pestering me I'll call up Dell and send it in. Until then I could care less.

As far as wireless routers go D-Link makes good ones. So do Netgear and Linksys. I've had good luck with D-Link in the past and just bought the Netgear one so we'll see how that goes. If your into security one thing to note is that the Linksys only has MAC banning. Meaning it will allow any MAC you do not tell it not to (make sense?). The others will explicitly allow only those you tell it too (safer). I switched to Netgear to see how good their SPI firewall is.

I've got WUXGA on my i8600.... its awesome, i must be lucky... although 1 dead pixel at the bottom left, very hard to find at such a high res!

as for the main question, me too!

I've been looking, I think i want to get the Linksys WRT54G either that or the netgear WRG 614+

both are G routers... what do you guys reckon? experiences?

i heard the d-link DI-624+ is no good....

Mine is awesome too. A little light spot on the bottom does not knock it out of the stellar category for me.

The DI-624 is the super air plus exclamation point wow look at the 1000x speed 108Mbps one. I've also heard less than great things about that one. I have stood by the DI-824 however.

I had the netgear b/g router and it died after a few months. I think i'll go for D-Link next.

If your going to use an Internal wireless card on laptop then there is NO reason to get a router that supports these propriatary speeds like 108Mbs because the internal wireless cards do not support these speeds. The most you can get is 54Mbs so why pay extra for something that it won't use.

I got a DLink DI-524 G Router for like $50.00 at Best Buy and it works fine ..

I left that part out as I assumed this was clear to the average laptop buyer here. Again the lesson is don't fall for the marketing.

I am often wrong so thank you Ed, I should have pointed that out in my original mocking of the D-Link. I think the Sager 8790 has the "turbo" 108 card but it still really doesn't matter, then the connection is going to be the bottleneck (as is already the case with regular 54Mbps). But damn if the file transfers wouldn't fly over that!

nope, i wasnt looking at a 108.. onlt the 54G ones...

There are 108mbps 802.11g mini-pci cards you can buy... I have one. Check ebay or google it. Unfortunately, 108mbps is too susceptible to interference to be useful for me. My neighbor's wireless network causes me to get horrendous speeds with channel spanning turned on... I can use the other speed increasing features of "SuperG" though, just not channel spanning.

As for the D-Link DI-624 I haven't had a single problem with it. It was easy to set up, it supports WPA, and my connection rarely drops. Can't ask for much more in a $40 router (after rebate). It handles wireless much better than the Linksys I upgraded from, but to be fair to Linksys, it was a pretty old version of their 802.11b router, so newer revisions probably work better.

I got the Linksys WAG54G (Wireless ADSL Gateway) - and it worked first time with everything. Very easy to setup (it was my first time setting up a home network), and I'm running it with a PC 'hard wired' and my 8600 with a Dell Truemobile 1450 card. Can now surf the web from anywhere in the house

Re the light leakage, Has anyone looked at other laptops? I had a look at over 15 different brands today in the local PC store, HP, Compaq, Acer etc, they all had light leakage to some degree, some had far more than the minimal amount on my dell, I haven't seen a laptop panel that doesn't leak some light around the edges, I think sometimes people can get too paranoid wanting absolute perfection.

Sorry, I meant 15 different Laptops, not brands.

I have used the Netgear wireless router for about 2 years now without any problems. Highly recommend it. I have not converted to G yet though.

I've been using Netgear wireless products for several years now. I have a heterogeneous networking environment with a Powerbook, my employer's Lattitude (using a PC card NIC), a Palm Tungsten C, and various hard-wired devices. I am using MAC level security over my network. I was using a WGR614 with good results. I recently replaced it with an FWG114P as I wanted a more powerful signal and a higher gain antenna (and some potential antenna options). Netgear equipment is easy to administer and is reasonably priced. 108Mb equipment appears to be problematic - if you really need the speed (to transfer a bunch of files or something), just plug it in to a cable temporarily.

I've happily used D-Link; netgear and Linksys.

Our network guy at the office says that Cisco recently bought Linksys, and that their router firmware is therefore likely to be upgraded an maintained stretching the life of a router, and solving a linksys issue, which is frequent frying of the router upon a firmware upgrade.

After a crash at home I bought the only wireless router available at the only store nearby, which was a microsoft, and was nothing but problems, start to finish.

I LOVE my Linksys WRT54G. It, IMO, is the best g-router you can get for the home as far as features and performance. It never goes down, and there are a ton of 3rd-party firmware hacks that add many more options and features, such as DynDNS updating, and Static DHCP. You can also increase its wireless signal strength.

And DO NOT get a Microsoft. They're horrible.

Hi I have the Linksys 54G Wireless Router connected to Cable Modem. I was wondering if anyone know if I should use a Booster to make my speed faster. Also what happen if I connect two boosters with the Router? But yeah does anyone know if the booster actually slow down the performance or does it speed it up? Also is the booster really bad for us. Thanks
