I've got a Belkin "b" and a Microsoft "g". The Microsoft is a little more user friendly being that it is designed for non techies.
What I have noticed between the two is that the Belkin never droped a signal to the computers. I have to open ports for several of the video games I play. For some reason the Belkin had problems with this and would at least once a night slow to a crawl and drop me from the server. The Microsoft looses signal to the computers a couple of times a day, and I will have to go back into "view connections" and log onto the network again. However, once I opened ports in the Microsoft I have never been droped from any game servers.
Just a bit of compromise on both products. But I can't complain, I got the Microsoft "g" for $40. You get what you pay for.

Another vote for the Linksys WRT54G here. I adore mine, fast speeds, WPA security, hacked firmware (sveasoft) with transmit power boosts!

I have a wired router for the desktop. This was before I got my Dell 'textbook' (it ain't a notebook! ). I have the Linksys BEFSX41. It is a firewall router with a 4-port switch/VPN endpoint. It has a good NAT function and I flashed it to rev 1.50.18 last night. I have it doing DHCP. Hanging off of it is a D-Link: DWL-7100AP wireless access point, using a static address to the router, MAC filtering, WPA/TKIP, and using the Linksys for DHCP (to assign the IP addresses).

Whatever you get, I recommend it having a hardware firewall - it'll stop the majority of the broken packets from getting in from the outside world. Also, if you plan to go mobile with your notebook to other wireless networks then I recommend you also have firewall software installed.

Well I just picked up a Linksys B/G router and it's great. Just blows my dead Netgear away. Downstairs I get 97% signal strength with the linksys. My netgear gave me around 60%.

Archer,

what kind of transfer rates are you getting ?

either wireless to wireless or
wired to wireless speeds please!

sshuit

PS. How do you know what % connection strength you have? I only get 1 to 5 bars from my intel proset thingy.

under the task icon for intel pro, open it, click troubleshooting and statistics. Transfer rates are good. I can't tell the difference between wired or wireless.

I have a motorola 802.11g router and it's really good. It's doesn't broadcast the brand of the router with the ssid, which helps make it a little more secure, and the cd that comes with it makes it a breeze to set up with encryption and everything (ie. you don't have to be a brain to configure it).
