5660 dies

My 5660-S, purchased 10/12/02, has died. Wanted to get some ideas from you all as to what you think problem is.

It has worked perfectly till about 5 days ago. I had downloaded all the latest Windows security patches (plus updated my A/V definition files for Norton Security 2004). The next day I went to turn on the lappy and all I got was the green power light - absolutely no boot - occasionally the fans would run.
Made sure hibernate wasn't on made no difference at all. Would not boot off a boot disk either, can't even get into the bios or see a thing on the screen.

My theory is hard drive failure - called Adam & left a message - I had bought an extended warranty thru Phillips so called them. Got box today from FedEx to ship to MicroMedics - must say it is very very flimsy and I have doubts of shipping it back to them like this.

I'll be quite interested to see what happens - have vacation coming up very very soon & wanted to bring the laptop with (like usual).

If anyone has any ideas or has had something similar happen, please respond & thanks.

that's what mine did when the mobo toasted. You can try pulling the memory, hdd, and cdrom to seeif that helps. You said it doesn't get to a bios screen, that worries me.

Also suspected the vid card - at this point I have no idea what is wrong.

MicroMedics shipped the wrong size box/styrofoam - so even more time lost now.

My 5600 just did the same thing. No bios at startup, no hard drive light flicking, no floppy search, even changed out hd's, no go. Sager said probially a hardware problem. Now into local shop for a look see. Toooooo expensive to ship to sager from Canada, especially since it weights 9 pounds plus packing. Will let you know results.

I just talked to MicroMedics and was told the logic board was dead (in other words the mobo crapped out).

Well I had the local shop check it out and they figure the motherboard. they can't fix it as not familar with machine. it seems that no one in Canada has even heard of the name Sager. anyway, off via UPS to ship to sager shop in california, $ 78.00 Canadian shipping one way. will let you know what they find and the costs.

My thanks to Adam and especially Tom @PCTorque for helping assist in dealing with Philips Priority Service. They offered me a buyout finally yesterday & now I can move on.

They cannibalized my old laptop before I could even get the HD.

Hey MicroMedics said the same thing to me, sent me back my machine, and nope, it ain't fixed. Same problem. Locks completely up on boot.

I'm PISSED at MicroMedics. They sent me back my 5670 wrapped in one piece of bubble wrap in a beat up box. Screen was covered in dust, and it's still broken. Proably more broken... who knows.

So, after having waited a week, I'll have to send it out again, to get even more beat-up by FedEx.

To Heath: I got mine fixed and it was due to the RAM. I sent it to SAGER Midern Computers Inc. There close to you so contact me for the details at gwninja@shaw.ca

YES YES YES

same thing has just happened to me. It is as if these things are on self destruct timers as I got my 5660 from PCTorque at about the same time.

Although my warrantee has expired, and it is $200US for me to ship from New Zealand to USA and back.

However, i have actually got it to go. It spent about a couple of hours, where I would turn it on, and the harddrive lights would all go, but that black screen with writing wouldn't post, or it would get half way into windows and lock up needing force shut down.

However, i have got it to work. I checked all the components. And that didn't work. And then in my rage I gave it a little firm shake, and then I placed it in a leaning position, and it is now working. I am afraid to move it now. I fear it is a loose connection on the mobo, but when I got into windows it said there had been a device error with my graphics card (ATi Mob 9000 360) caught it some infinite loop, telling me to reboot.

So thats where i am now, about to update my drivers, fearing to move my laptop tonight. I will keep you posted and I am interested to know what happens with you others.

My Sager 5660 that I have proudly owned since Jan 2003 just took a dive also, same problem as said above. I was working on it one night and poof it turned off. So I booted it and only the green light went on. I took out the hard drive and reseated it and it turned back on, booted fine, then I quickly backed up my files, then it froze. I tried the harddrive thing again and nothing this time, just the green light.

Since my warranty is expired and I have basically killed my warranty doing a self paint job a bit ago, I decided to see if I could locate the problem. I pulled the sager down to 1 ram chip, mobo, and CPU (with power switch and Monitor attached). It will randomly show the POST 4 to 10 times, then it seem to just do the green light thing, with no screen powerup. I will leave it alone for 10 to 20 minutes and it will do the same.

I tried switching the processor (2.53) for a 2.60 and it had the same problem, so I am beggining to think it might be the Mobo.

Called Sager to check prices, Mobo for 5660 is $400, which I dont have. So I have a nice paper weight instead of my wonderful Sager (I used my Sager an average of 5 hours a day minimum). Also since I dont have any diagnostic tools, I am scared to order a new Mobo and find out that it didnt fix the problem.

Sager Support also offers to run diagnostics on it for $45, plus shipping. So I am gonna try to save up some money and get it fully checked. So I dont kill the $400 for no reason.

It has been one of the best machines I have owned, and I will gladly get another Sager in the future when the money situation gets better.

Mine was the mobo. They replaced it once, sent it back to me, still had the same problem, then they put in yet another mobo. Works great now.

Kinda sick that these mobos are barely lasting more than a year...

I may reconsider my choice of a Sager in years to come... I've already bought a slower, much lighter Toshiba for my wife, we'll see how it holds up compared to the Sager.

to Indigo Zenith: As you can see above, for me it was a ram problem. My Sager still runs great and is fffffaaassssttttttt but if it craps out again and they tell me its the motherboard, well, I'm gonna buy me an IBM thinkpad. The wife has had one for years and like that bunny beating the drum, it keeps on going. Yes, I think that's cheaper then replacement parts and shipping and not knowing how long things will last. Besides, IBM has a better re-sale value.
