3D Graphics and Linux

I'm in the process of choosing a laptop right now. One of the very important thing for me is that I will want to run Linux at least as much as I run WinXP therefore how well the 3D drivers works under Linux is very important to me. Can someone with experience tell me how the three different driver compare : Nvidia's binary driver, ATI's binary driver, and the Open Source DRI Radeon driver?

I don“t know the direct difference in perfomance between the three, but there are other concerns also:
Nvidia is by far the most easiest drivers to install (except for Xfree86 own DRI drivers). Ati can be a little in this.
The Xfree86 DRI is performing very bad compared to the other drivers.

I use a 9600 mob. from ATI which is performing really nice under linux.

Septesix, may I ask what you need 3D in Linux for?

I am trying to get 3d in Suse 9.1 now. I want it for UT2K4 (video game). Also the main reason is I should have everything windows offers just more stable.

I'm mostly going to use it for some graphics research. Some of the programs that I write uses OpenGL and runs really slow with software rendering (Mesa3D). A Fully accelerated OpenGL drivers under Linux will make my life a lot easier..

That , and, of course, some of the gaming under Linux as well. I'll mostly be running NWN, UT2004, and if at all possible, Doom 3..

On a related topic, has anyone compare the performance between the XFree's DRI Radeon driver and the one from ATI on the R2*0 chips? (like MR9000 and MR9200)? Is the ATI one much faster than the other?

Ok, fair enough. I was just afraid that you were one of those people who thought that all games run under Linux.

I havent tested the performance myself, but the ATi drivers work fine for me.

I strongly suggest looking at:
http://www.rage3d.com/board/ -- ATI card info
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/ -- nVidia card info

Last I checked, ATI has NOT released a driver for the mobility Radeon 9700 (mobility Radeon 9600 works -- probably can fool linux into thinking that 9700 is a 9600, until they update the driver). nVidia, on the other hand, seems to provide good support for GeForce Go cards under Linux.

There are still issues with Xorg and Radeon drivers...you might want to wait a bit to use FC2 if you were thinking that direction.
