Sound Quality on the Sager 8790?

How's the sound quality on the Sager 8790? I may be purchasing the version with the TV Tuner, not the subwoofer because I'm in college, and would listen to music on head headphones. Also, usually laptops have bad sound, so it wouldn't be worth it to get the sub.

Thanks

No Subwoofer. Speakers are nothing to "write home about". They do work. The TV Tune will be the loudest sound source on the machine. Be careful that you don't blow the speakers or headphones if the volume is set too loud.

I would not suggest getting the sub; I have used the sub system of the 4760 (same chassis it would appear) and the case seems to rattle if the volume is turned up anything past about 40%.
Other than that I can't comment on the 8790 itself.

Sound quality of the 8790 through headphones: bad. My first VAIO, and two IBMs in the meanwhile, had much better sound through headphones. Here, I hear rattling, high-pitch sounds, etc. Basically you can hear every component in the machine. I just tried a 5780 clone's headphones output today, and it appears to be way better.

damn it, it will be a hard transition from the Asus A7N8X Deluxe nVidia SoundStorm and Logitech Z-560. When you guys say bad headphone sound quality, is it unbearable, or is it bad compared to a desktop system....or even worse, bad compared to other laptops?

Is there a comparable laptop, but with better sound?

Heres a dumb question. WHY IS THIS UNDER PHOTO GALLERY? lol

I agree, this is a strange place for this post, but on to answer the question. I bought both the TV tuner and the sub woofer as an experiment. After all it was only $25 more. I didn't like the procedure for swapping them and I use the TV tuner a lot for converting video. I doubt I will ever have the sub woofer in again. It is better than most laptops with it in but Toshiba speakers are by far the best built in ones. I will just plug in speakers or use headphones. They all sound great to me and I have very sensitive hearing. There have been several posts on these boards that tell us if you use an extension plug in on the headphones that you don't hear the interference noises over them. Do a search on it for the details.

What about the front SPDIF output? Any problems there?

Advise: SB Audigy NX (worth every penny)
And I picked up the JBL Creature II Speakers... (because thier small footprint and killer sound)

I lived with the stock Sager Audio for about a month before I couldn't take it anymore... The Headphone jack picks up a lot of distortion from the internals on the system.... The speakers at any type of volume rattle really bad...

I love my 8790.. But since sound is an important factory to me.. I invested hte extra cash into the Audigy NX .. Trust me it's worth it!

I can agree with Captain Al, the speakers do f@*% rattle and vibrate at anything low-mid and above forget about at high volume , don't get me wrong and I'm sure alot of you will probably correct me...only the songs/sound that have bass or high freqs in it will, not everything will but when it does it does.......and it shouldn't!!!!

If all was not well, the headphone jack picks up all interference, no matter what I did to mute on the sound panel it could not mute everything. There is still a little hiss and some pings you can hear........again it goes away when hearing music/sound but its not really going away is it...its just to low to hear it....its still there

Yeah I know, I have issues, but I also have 3K+ invested and it should at least have basic sound like all my other basic sub-1K laptops!

Anyways, look at my other post for some interesting stuff (BTW) when I opened up the bastard, I stuffed some foam on the back of the front speakers and the rattle went away

I would pick up the SUBWOOFER at all costs, It makes all the difference in DVD viewing/listening. If only I could have the sub and TV tuner in at the same time. Don't use the 7 in 1 card reader that much, it could fit there. No problem with headphones enjoy
