After seeing the 9200 and 8600 in person at a Dell Kiosk, the 8600 is just plain ugly!

No offence

As an 8600 owner, I concur.

The top part of the 8600 is nice, with it's pure silver exterior. However, that all changes when I open up the laptop.

As I have both, a file server is much better since you can access it remotely. In addition with mirrored drives your risk of losing data goes way down.

The obvious drawbacks are a file server is much more expensive, and not as mobile as an external drive.

If you have the time, you might as well go from 001 upto 012.
But that's completely upto you.

LOL, i'm sorry guys, but I just find it so funny how everyone puts their best foot forward when taking a pic of their desk. They put up the sexy screen saver and all their high tech toys in plain view. I guess i'm jelous ! I wish I had all that good stuff!

Oh, and that desk, you just cant see all the way to the floor.... It sits about 3ft off the ground, so i've got a 3ft space underneath the top of that desk.

And here's mine

Left to right: Dell Inspiron 8600, Compaq 2199US, Dell 700m
The desktop (not visible) except for the LCD, mouse & keyboard, is the Dell 4600.

Very funny!

I should have said that the desktop tower is not visible as it is under the desk. Needless to say, this is not how I have it set up for day-to-day use.

If you're asking why I have these machines, I am not a notebook collector, no. Others have the disease a lot worse than I do. The i8600 is my primary notebook. I had just purchased the Compaq when the $750 Dell notebook coupon came along and I decided to upgrade. I didn't know if I'd prefer the i8600 or 700m - so I bought both to try them out. I'm selling the Compaq and the 700m.

It is the Targus Notebook Chillpad. Got it for $10 AR from buy.com. I like it - keeps notebook, and my lap or desk cool.

Thought I would rearrange the room a bit since my apt is a mess. Didn't really get anything new except that i replaced the crappy modified OEM soundblaster audigy2 zs with a retail platinum package, i swapped out my cambridge speakers with the z5500, and one of the tfts moved into the bedroom where my gf has ner new comp setup.
