How about http://www.onlinemetals.com/ ? This is from a link that I gave in this thread on May 22:

http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportf...sage.id=114949

"Well I just recieved 4 - 3cm by 3cm (1.81" * 1.81") gauge 16 (.0647" thick) copper pieces and another 12 cm by 3 cm strip of copper when i ordered only 2 - 3cm * 3cm pieces from onlinemetals.com! 79 cents for material! but $9 for shipping . I am ready to mod, i got my Artic silver 5 (from frys), isoprpyl alcohol (99% alcohol) soldering paste (home depot) and metal epoxy (home depot, for glueing copper to die). Im ready to go! Oh yeah the most important part of all the REFURB mobile radeon 9600 PRO 128 MB with a 90 day warranty for $154 through dell spare parts buisness extension."

Additionally note that those are the prices exclusive of shipping, which you have to pay on top of that.

You must call up to get the cards, Dell Spare Parts. It may be a hassle involving numerous calls but you should manage in the end....

i originally ordered my laptop with the radeon 9600 however at the time there were shortages of them and the only way i was going to get my laptop in time for my holiday was to get the 64mb geforce 5200 put it in instead.

anyway in a month or so when i come back i will be looking at upgrading the card to the 128mb radeon 9600 most likely.. will i *need* to do this mod? id rather not if i dont have to.. does the 128mb geforce 5650 have the same prob?

for the time being do you reckon id notice the difference between the 64mb 5200 and the radeon 9600 just doing light gaming, watching dvd's and browsing?

oh.. and do you think the 5650/9600 will be the last cards supported by the inspiron 8600 or is it worth waiting and see if they bring out higher cards that will fit in the 8600?

cheers

Probably nothing compatable, but when/if the 8600 is updated when "Centrino 2" comes out, the cards for that may be in the same form factor. Its possible.
And since you have the i8600, you should not have to do any heat mod. It is only really necessary if you have the lower heat tolerance i8500..... especially if you recieve that revision A04 card.

My cards revision is 1 but is works good for me maybe cuz i use a 1200x800 resolution and dont really use the much power form the Video card.
Even if the cards that come with the Centrino 2 8600 are the same form factor, they will be PCI-Express cards and will therefore require some kind of adaptor for AGP . If anyone can find a 9700 that fits, this will be the last possible upgrade methinks.

Ok i dont think they are making any other GPU for the i8600 and PCI express on a laptop will come some months down the line not anytime soon. other thing there will never be any adapter or anything.
Nup, no chance of an adapter and no chance of a MR9700 or any other new card for the i8600 unless Dell specifically releases another one in that form factor, which is unlikely.

Looking for different silver compounds. Is the Antec Sliver thermal compound as good as the Arctic Silver? It says 99% micronized silver on it, but has anyone here used it successfully?

I have used it, it is not as good as Arctic Silver 5. Don't mess around with this, go with the best.

from wut ive read, the consensus is Arctic Silver 5 is the best. And its only $6 shipped... so it wont be more than a buck or two more than anything else.

I started doing this mod on my laptop but have struck a halt on removal of the heat spreader. This may be a stupid question, but do I apply arctic silver to die head only (about 8mm x 8mm) or the entire top of the GPU, which is about 3cm x 3cm. I have checked Baywolfs site and because he uses the 5650, he seems to be covering the entire surface. I am pretty sure I just need to cover the 8mm2 surface of the die, but it seems to be a pretty small contact area, so I just wanted some confirmation thanks.

Also in regards to applying arctic silver to the CPU, I notice that there is a similar thermal pad to what is on the GPU. Does this need to be replaced with a copper plate also? I have read the Sager tutorial on lapping the heat spreader and it does not do so, but I was wondering if the extra thickness in the Dell was too much to be bridged purely by arctic sliver.

Finally, back to the vid card, I notice there is also a thermal pad on the memory modules of the vid card. Is it possible to apply the copper and arctic silver in this location also and if so, is it worthwhile?

Cheers
