Acer 8006Lmi now shipping! (2.0Ghz dothan)

Several stores now have the Acer 8006Lmi--I'm really tempted. Only thing I don't like is the 4200rpm hard drive and how it looks. Oh, and the price, $700 more than the Ferrari 3200 but not much of a difference in specs besides the processor and dvi vs vga output on the 3200.

I'm also tempted by the TM8006. Think I'll wait till I've seen a review of each machine (hopefully a comparative one).

Oh, one other difference between the two: the TM 8006 has the 100 pin port for the port replicator but the Ferrari 3200 doesn't (it's not mentioned in the 3200 manual). Some people might find this important.

Have heard that the build quality of the 3200 might not be as good as that of the TM8006... I thought the Ferarri would be a solid machine....

I'm not so certain Red. It appearsa that the 800/8000/Ferrari's share the same chassis. Can someone verify this one? Adam?

The day when a laptop with a 4200rpm HDD can be sold for $2700 will be a very sad day. Well, what do you know, acer has just done the unthinkable. Their selling a butt-ugly system for a very unreasonable price. If they don't slow down soon, they'll be heading into vodoo territory. I wonder if the battery life really is 5 hrs. IT would be hilarious if it was only 3 and a half like the G556.

ferrari 3200 supports 8x on the ati, TM8006 only supports 4x.

The HD RPM on laptops seems to be a major hang up for some people (Especially the ANTI ACER poster above).

Just because the machine doesnt ship with your idea of the perfect HD doesnt mean the rest of the machine is not brilliant.

If 4200rpm drive is not what you want but you like the rest of the specs....Then change the ****** HD to a 7200rpm or whatever else you need.

If you can afford to buy a laptop you can afford to buy a 7200rpm $180 HD if you want one. Then put the old HD in a enclosure or sell it to get $100 back...

My advice on laptops has always been if the SCREEN,PROCESSOR,BUILD QUALITY,DVD Drive,Weight & Design is perfect for you do not be put off by either low memory or not the Hard drive you want.

These components can updated to whatever you want to put in there whenever you want to do it - Its the other factors that are important.....

That's what we'll probably end up doing of course. Why should we though?

If you pay for a BMW you don't expect to have to install new brakes in it to match the performance of the engine. In the same way, a laptop on the upper end of pricing should come with the best available components. It just doesn't make sense to mate one of the fastest laptop processors available with one of the slowest drives available!

Further, in some cases changing the hard drive can void your warranty. Some notebooks don't make the hard drive an easily replaceable part, either.

In addition, some laptops hard drives come with a partition which has backups of what's originally on it, causing a big hassle to replace the HD.

But, this is moreso marketing than an actual performance difference, right?

I'm looking forward to the benchmarks between these two laptops. My guess is the 8006Lmi will be a bit faster, and also get about 2 hours more battery life.

I have never known a laptop manufacturer stating that if you change the hard drive then you invalidate the whole machines warranty.

What I have come across is laptop manufacturers stating the warranty will be intact it will just not cover the new hard drive.

I understand your point on the BMW comparison. Bottom line is there is NO perfect laptop all of them have a something that could have been done better or different engineering.

What I am saying is the Brakes are a lot easier and cheaper to change than the engine........and if those new brakes make it the best for you then do it.............

Yes you dont have to change brakes that come with it they are fine for most people.....however there are always people who wish to make their car better by changing the brakes. (Porsche owners, ferrari owners....they pay top whack for their cars but can still tune them)

I am sure Acer could have put in a 7200rpm drive but that would put the price up to $2900.00. You are paying for the components that are in the machine.....

Sure Acer could offer a $180.00 option to upgrade the drive to 7200rpm - people would not then be saying slow drive on that acer dont buy it..........they would be saying "Nice laptop....did you go for the 7200rpm drive option for the extra $180".

Look at all the other manufacturers.............very few if any offer a 7200rpm drive as standard most of them offer it as an EXTRA COST option.

Also bearing in mind it is a 80gb drive they supply as standard.....they could have dropped it down to 60gb 5400rpm as standard for the same price but then people would say it should have a 80gb drive in it!

hmm... did anyone recognize the laptop is really quiet (nearly no sound)? And you're not getting hot hands, at the left side over the hdd, if you're typing. I read about people putting in a 7200rpm drive and getting a warmer left hand (not really hot, but warm!) and are able to hear the harddisk while working, but nothing else (very quiet fan?)

I think the harddisk is not only a slow one but also an extremly quiet one? So it was maybe not a fault, but a have-to for acer to keep the nb silent? (if you don't need a silent notebook, it's no problem to replace it, but for businessmen silence is more important than a two second faster OS loading and so on... )

Also the batteryusage is higher for faster harddisks. So, is it a bug or a feature?

your opinions about that reason?

There is NO difference in noise / heat or battery life on the travelmate 8000 series after upgrading the HD.

I went from a toshiba 80gb 4200rpm that was standard in the machine to a hitachi 7200rpm 60gb drive.

Noise of HD (If anything less i always found access on Travelstar drives quieter than toshiba drives in laptops), heat not a degree more HD runs at 39c same as previous.

Battery life ok i might have to give u this i think i got about 1 minute less.....

I'm not having any luck in the seach result for my question:

What is the case made of for the Acer 8006Lmi? Any one?
hm thanks Dekka.. how does it costs?

Strong Plastic externally. (Stronger than Dell plastic - less flexing).

When I changed the Sodimm on the machine I noted that there was a lot of metal round the motherboard.

The machine is sturdy and build quality i would put better than Dell and on par with Toshiba but not as good as IBM.

Dekka, thanks for the quick reply... This lappy meets all my requirements. Now, I need to make a decision.
