Weird Windows Profile Error

The second time I started my new laptop I got this message at the point in XP startup where you are supposed to select the user profile. Im not all that worried about it because Im the only user, but if anyone knows how to clear it Im up for suggestions.

Here is the error text:

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

Any clue?

Thanks for the help.

i had it once, the cause was a bad hd, but there are some possible solutions if the files just got corrupt (which is the most probable), try running chkdsk, OR deleting and recreating the damaged account.

Hope that helps.

Ok I created a new profile then restarted and used the new profile. I was able to delete the old profile while I was logged into the new one.

You cant delete a profile you are logged into and xp will let two profiles be logged on at the same time so you have to be sure to log off the one you want to delete.

This is getting wordy and itll only get worse.

Everything seems to be working normaly except the profile I deleted (the corrupt one) still shows up at the "click your username" screen. So i press that and now it works just fine. ie. no more error message.

Well I think maybe XP will never let you delete the original profile since maybe its the master or something. So i delete the new profile i had just created. Restart and now both profiles are still showing up at startup. I go into the control panel/setting and maintenance/system/advanced/user profiles; and it only shows the one profile.

Once again its only a slight annoyance since im the only user. But if anyone knows how to make this work. Ill be happy to try.

Thanks for the help.
