My last job was on a movie set. I was part of the visual effects unit working with a guy named Jay, one of the lead animators on the Final Fantasy movie. It was his first day on the set, having just flown out from New York.
Me: How was the flight?Jay: Not bad, I had some work to do. I'm working on something for a friend of mine, a little animation for his independent film.(Intrigued)
What do you use?Maya.
Oh yeah? You run Maya on a laptop?Yeah. Check it out. (Begins to pull laptop out of backpack) It's pretty cool. Weighs about ten pounds though. He's got a bit of a tone in his voice: Yeah, my laptop kicks a$$
What kind is it? The tone in my voice says, "My laptop kicks your laptop's a$$ but let's see it anyway" It's custom built by a company called Sager. (!)
Cool. Which model? This is the 8790. (Patting mine on the head)Uh, I don't know. They bought it for me on my last job. (!!)
Turns out they supplied the animators on his last job with loaded 5690s: 3.4 Northwood, 2GB RAM, dual optical drives, dual 60GB HD, and let them keep their computers at the end of the project.
(that's green for envy)
PS: Sorry about the quality of the pic. I had two 11-megapixel digital SLR bodies with me, but they were on set so all I had was my cell phone camera.
