Installing windows on a 64bit

This is probably a stupid question (yes they do exist) but here goes.

I'm building a 64bit computer and I didn't feel like buying a windows xp cd. Could I just use the recovery cd that came with my 8887? Also, will it be necessary to have a floppy drive in order to install it? I'm away of the ms-startup disk and the 6 boot disks but it would just be a little more painless if I only needed a Cd-rom drive.

Well, that's going to be pretty hard since XP includes "Microsoft Product Activation". So, if you don't register your copy of XP (from the 64-bit machine) with Microsoft within 30 days, it will stop working. And if you do register it, they will catch you for pirating.

All of this doesn't apply, of course, if you don't have your 8887 anymore.

There are much better forums for this subject that a laptop forum. I would do a search and find a forum for 64bit os discussion. Your much more likely to find the answers your looking for, or at least get pointed to some good information. That being said, no, the 32bit version would not work as a recovery for the 64bit beta wich is the only 64bit windows unless your talking about an itanium setup in which case you would need an itanium system recovery disk.

I was thinking that it might work because most 64-bit procs have a 32-bit emulation mode (or they just might be a 32-bit proc w/64-bit extensions). Plus, I didn't think that he wanted to use the new 64-bit windows beta. In that case, wouldn't a 32-bit OS still work?

Yes the 32-bit os should work, but I was wondering why I would be accused for pirating if I'm installing the same software I own on two different machines.

And if the recovery cd that came with my 8887 (which I still use) will work as an installation cd.

Because that long license agreement you agree to before even using windows xp specifically says you are to only run the software on one computer... In other words, you've agreed you would have a copy of Windows XP for each computer that has Windows XP on it.

And therefore, it is pirating when you install one copy of Windows XP on more than one computer.
