Cracking Monitor Hinge

I bought the M6809 from BestBuy just over a week ago. I noticed today that one of the hinges that the monitor pivots on is cracked. I don't recall seeing this before. Do e-machines do this alot or am I just unlucky? Guess it was a good thing that I did buy that Bestbuy Warrenty.

I open and close mine quite a bit and use it on the traytable of planes daily. I don't have any cracks around the hinges yet. Is it a superficial crack or a structural crack?

I don't know. I assume just by looking at it that they are superficial. The Silver plastic around the hinge is what is cracking. I am hoping there is something more substanial actually holding the monitor to the CPU.

I had a laptop with one broken hinge and months later the second went out. Talk about immediatley useless machine. It was like a free moving door hinge. I took it apart and have since made two attempts at repairing it. (Compaq wanted over $150 dollars for two very little metal hinge replacements!) It has held since my last repair but that machine is now a home knock around- mostly internet and mp3 player storage machine.

I bet there are metal hinges under the cracked plastic you see. I doubt it is structural in any way. The screen with seems a bit goosy if the hinge has broken.

Take it back and exchange it.

Yup. Mine just formed a crack, too, after two weeks of use (on left side to the left of the hinge). It seems to be structural as the crack widens as you open the screen and then closes tight after the screen is opened. I hope that is doesn't get bigger.

Crap, you all are scaring me. I just bought my M6805 2 hours ago. After rebates I will have paid 1109$ total out the door, but if this thing is going to fall apart, then maybe I should rethink this. I haven't heard too many complaints about the build quality, damn I hope this thing is solid.

It's fine. I have had no issues with my lappie going on 4 months. Relax. All laptops have a bad one here and there. Plus, it may just be cosmetic. So unless you notice the same issues, just enjoy your brand new toy. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine thus far.

cheers...

I would still recommend buying this beast, even though I do have a small stress crack. This thing kicks arse and nobody can believe how powerful it is for the price. If this crack gets any bigger, then I am sure that it is covered on the included one year warranty (I hope).

Cypher87:: That is exactely where and what mine did. I took it back to Best Buy and they swaped it out with no problems. Hopefully it is just like opraman said, and we were just the unlucky ones. Still glad I bought this lap top however.

My 6809 has a crack in the left hinge also...
Opening and closing it always seemed stiffer than my brother's 6805 which does not have a crack. Unfortunately, i've had mine for about a month now, and it looks like I'll have to go through e-machines for a replacement.

My M6809 also has crack in the silver plastic piece on the left. I bought mine on 4/25/04 with the Best Buy 3 year plan. Does anyone know if I can take this to Best Buy to have it replaced or do I have to deal with Best Buy sending it to eMachines for repair?
I bought mine (M6809) on 4/17/04 and have noticed 2 small cracks on the left hinge as described above. I have already had the hard drive replaced because it went bad too. I guess I should have taken it back when I had the chance and ate the restocking fee. Oh well, live and learn. Anyone want a slightly used eMachine?
I took my notebook back to best buy 31 days after purchase, and they exchanged it for a new one. This 6809 is slightly different from my old one. It has a Fn + F1 key to turn off the status LED's and a different DVD burner. The burner tray doesn't feel as strong. Its a little looser and the CD's seem like they rub against something when sliding in. One good point is that the DVD seems to be quieter. This is my third M6809, and I hope its my last.

Has anyone had problems booting from a burned CD? I couldn't boot from a burned CD on my previous 6809 or this one, and I've tried two different brands of disks.

Stupid Best Buy

My top left hinge formed a cracked on my M6805 and Best Buy refused to take it back because of it being 2.5 weeks old instead of the 2 week warranty!!! Now I have to send it to E-Machines...figures. This, though, still does not hurt my satisfaction with the machine, for the crack is just looks, but the thing runs better then I had ever expected...

My machine also has a crack near the left hinge.I called Emachines since I bought extra warrenty through them, but they said the extra warrenty doesnt cover cosmetics. They want a 160 some bucks to fix it.I think I'll wait until I cant open and close my laptop. Then send it in.

It seems just to be cosmetic...

As far as I can tell its just cosmetic, but it still seams ugly to me...If you happen to own norton ghost, you can easily create an image of your hard drive if needs be. I'm not sure what Best Buy's policy on data is, but I doubt they'll let you switch the HD (If you did buy it from best buy, and if you did, two weeks is the warrranty period). If you want emachines to deal with it, they don't (as far as I was informed) replace the machine but just the part...So if you could send it into them, they should leave the data alone (I personaly would still remove personal stuff such as emails...). But thats if you could get them to accept it (depends on who you talk to).

Bestbuy will not allow you swap the hard drive. I know I asked them if they would so I would not loose all my data, when they replaced my laptop. they said no.
Backup anything you can't replace prior to taking it back.
