Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 9

Switch-hitting Hinges

I am a candidate for the Fastest Hinge-Crack Award. Within one week, my M6810 developed cracks on BOTH hinges. As mentioned earlier, it appears to happen in the blink of an eye. I've been inspecting closely, and at 9pm, both hinges were fine, and then upon closing the case at 10pm, both hinges showed cracks.

Go figure...

Hi guys, I have the m2105 series and also developed cracked hinges on both left and right sides. My question: how bad is this? is it only a cosmetic issue or in time i can loose my lcd ? I can live with cracked hinges, no problem, they don't bother me much, as long as my screen doesn't fall off

The cracks may have been there even before that. They are most easily seen while closing the damn laptop cause then they seem to open up pretty scary. While closed you need a 20/20 to be able to see them - just a hairline that could easily be overlooked. Actually, most people who have the laptop and haven't reported hinge cracks most probably have them but just haven't seen them.
What a silly way to mar a wonderful laptop.

This is ridiculous.
This is my second brand new M6805 and now, a month later it's developing a crack in the left hinge.

I have to say that I just noticed the hinge crack on the left side on my 6809 as well.

I got mine on 4/30/04. A person asked a couple of posts above if the standard warranty will fix this or not?

New 6810 user... left crack..

Short into... I used to own a Sager 5680, customized, beautiful. However, for what i needed it for, it was too heavy, too short battery, etc. The final straw however, was the broken hook for the lid.. so, i sold it to my parents, and since my dad likes fixing things, ill let him repair it...

Anyway, since i had the $ in hand for a new lappy, i went shopping. After a bit, i settled on the 6810 (couldnt justify the increase for the HDD and DVD burner) for 1250 (after rebate of course), and at the last minute, the 3 year warrenty.

Looks like it was a good thing i opted for the warrenty... out of the box (i assume, though not sure) i had a small crack in the.. u guessed it.. left hinge. At this point, i wont return it, but it is kinda disheartning to see such a problem. Hopefully things wont get any worse, as this looks to be a promising unit...

WEll, within a few hours, the crack extended, so this pos is going back... i should not get something like this for $1500........

Called emachines

Within a week of purchase, I got both a left and right hinge crack.

Exchanging this back at Besy Buy is not a good idea because most likely thier other stock are bad. I called Emachines and there is a line for repair. They are going to call me when they are ready to repair it. I loved the notebook for the 6 months that I've had it but now I'm having reservations.

I think they want to do a recall but it would hit them so bad that they might not recover.

See http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=33913 . E-machines are now fixing the broken hinges.

I got those damn, cracked hindges........
The Best Buy 3 year service plan will take my M6809 back and replace it with any other lappy (if you pay the difference)...they will also transfer the warranty and the customization (I think) to the new lappy.

So, I have two options....I'm either getting the M6811 or a Compaq. I still like the eMachines lappies, but how do I know that a new M6811 wont crack on me? Am I safer with a HP or a Compaq???????????
I'm thinking of replacing the M6809 with a Compaq r3240us......if that one doesn't have the shiny screen, then I'll most likely get the Compaq r3275us.

What I want to do is get the M6811, but how do I know that it wont crack on me?

Check for the manufacture date of the m6811. If it was manufactured prior to July, it has the potential for the problem. Thet started using the parts without the faults starting in July.

My suggestion is wait a month, then swap for an M6811. They will transfer the warranty.

See http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=33913 post #38 for how to tell if the lappy being offered is affected!
How would you kow if it was made pre-July?
Look at the serial number. Look at the thread I mentioned above.
i Did... i see no mention of dates in there....
hmmm....I couldn't tell if any of the other M6811s had the same problem...so I got the HP zv5260us.... *sigh*
post #177 of 636
I got the dates from an e-machine tech. Anaconda, who is an e-machine tech, says to look at your serial number, and it will tell you wether that laptop is affected.

Well, I'm finaly going to get my laptop back after being in 2 weeks...unrepaired. It appears as if they have quite a clog going on. According to tech support, he said that it seems that every machine they're selling is getting cracks...poor poor emachines...

This is getting out of hand.
I have returned two M6805 units with a left cracking hinge to Best Buy
I have just received a BRAND NEW M6810 and right out of the box, a cracked hinge.

3 brand new units, 3 returned.
Nice going, emachines!

Weird. I recieved my laptop back after about 5 days of requesting it returned. Well they said they couldn't repair it because of lack of parts, but when it comes back, viola, its repaired. Weird.
