Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 10

OK...I have resolution...let's hope. I have a 6809 that had the right hinge crack (a real nasty one too!) then the left one started as a hairline and was growing like a weed. I just got caught up on this board and yes I am S/N ending in 43. I purchased in May at local BBuy and noticed right crack within one month and left crack started in month two. Well I had an RMA box for over a month and finally mailed it in last Thursday. I got it back today (Tuesday)! I commend them on the fast return and new panel cover. I know they only replaced the cover because it was not all the way snapped at the bottom between the hinges. I snapped it back REALLY gently. Anyway, panel tightness feels the same upon opening, no cracks in hinges, no notebook shipping damage, and they did not even boot the PC (I checked logs). So RMA away folks, from me it was not bad at all.

My eMachines saga continues.
I am returning my 4th unit to Best Buy. Why will I not contact eMachines to have them fix it? Because I also have a dead pixel right in the middle of the display and they won't take care of it, I have to wait for about 5 million more to come up.
If I find an alternate config, I'm jumping ships. I've about had it with this manufacturer.

Just send it in...but make sure you send in a machine with a good screen. They fixed it for me very well, at least so far. Whats really nice is that my BIOS was updated too.

If you have "had it with this manufacturer" because you are exchanging the machine for another known bad one, sorry for you feelings. At any rate, there are many A64 configurations out there. Good luck finding one where the company fixes cosmetic problems on this large of a scale under warranty. Most "manufacturers" (Arima is the manufacturer, not eMachines) refuse to fix these problems. Have it properly fixed instead of getting new, bad machines from BB. eMachines has admitted the problem and have fixed it. If you keep getting machines manufactured when the bad batch was being installed, they will continue to crack.

There are several "alternate configurations" to be had.

I talked to the emachines people and they said it was a known issue and they had at this time no premanant fix. He said they have a database of people with this problem and they added my name to it and they will contact me when the issue can be resolved. He told me it wasn't an operational problem, but more of a cosmetic problem and for me to not worry about it and it will be fixed as soon as possible...what do you guys think of that?

Hey just a quick few questions for those of you who have had their m68xx's fixed by eMachine. When they shipped your laptop back to you did it just have two new hinges? or did they send you a new unit? I'm about to RMA mine for the hinges too and I'm wondering if I really need to backup my data if they are just going to replace the hinges. Also, have any of your broke since you've gotten your laptop back with the new hinges?

I figure if I'm going to send my laptop to eMachines I'm going to burn off all my data. Ghost the hard drive into an image. Flash my BIOS back to the original version for my m6807 (I'm running the m6811 bios) and just use their restore CDs to overwrite my copy of XP Pro. Then they won't have anything to bitch about.

I sent mine there with XP Pro (though I changed the boot screen to say Home). It came back with XP Pro too. They do tell you they reserve the right to format the drive. What was really nice was my BIOS was reflashed to the M6809 BIOS so I can run SP2 now.

As for what they replace, they replace the all the plastic on the back of the LCD (including the "e" and the hinges). They didn't replace anything else.

BTW: About 2 weeks and no cracks!

Okay, new information for today. The stocks all been replaced. These can be RMAed freely now.
So what does that mean? RMA it and get a whole new set of hinges that won't crack? IE: eMachine has figured out the cause and resolved it?

As I explained... *looks* somewhere on these boards , it was caused by a change in the manufacturing process for those hinges (the problem is acually those hinge covers, that is what is cracking) . That has been dealt with, the affected stock has been completely rotated out and they have the stock in the warehouse to do these repairs now.

The Anaconda: I also have the cracked hinge M2105. I can't send the laptop back to the manufacturer since I live in Romania What i wanted to know, is this a purely cosmetic issue or should i expect my LCD falling off somewhere in the near future.

The cracks haven't widened and it it seems that they will stay that way. I have no problem with them, but if this affects the whole screen then i have some serious superglueing to do

Thanks.

The guy at emachines told me that it was just a cosmetic defect....

As MasterCephus here confirmed, sp2ke, it is merely cosmetic. Its just a problem with the hinge covers.

Thanks for the info, everyone who posted. It seems that my M6809 has a crack in the left hinge, like many here. I probably wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't stumbled across this thread!

cracked hinges

My 6809 surprised me with 2 cracked hinges tonight, after 3 months of gentle care. I did a search and found this site, with enough postings to be really depressing.

Called eMachines, and was told first that there is a 2 month wait list, then after a minute on hold, was told that a return box is on the way and got my RMA. I asked if it was going to be a new cover or repaired hinges, and was told that they are now repairing the hinges. We shall see!

I have a 6805 that I bought the first day they became available, and I also have a cracked left hing. And I am very careful with my notebook.
people that have cracked left hindges...do they also fix the non cracked hindge...to prevent future cracks???
I'm betting they just pop off the monitor, take off the two plasic covers over the hinges and throw on two new ones. If you are worried give the right one a love tap and crack it too

I heard nothing about a 2 month wait when I called eMachines, they just said a box was on its way (to Canada woohoo! free shipping). I hope by a 2 month wait they mean once you send it you will be waiting 2 months for someone to fix it and send it back to you.

I don't know anything about a two month wait, though we had to deal with ones we already either had in the warehouse or called in and on the waiting list before we could set up new ones. But as I said earlier this week that waiting list requirement has been eliminated and we can set them up as soon as someone calls about it.

For those of you worried about your hinge that isnt cracked, I am speaking with emachines right now and i'm told they are dealing with the craked hinge by replacing the "bezel" which has both hinges allready attached. So you dont need to crack your good hinge before sending it in.
