Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 11

They replace almost the whole top of the LCD, if not all. How do I know? When I got it back, I got a new "e".

That's odd...the first rep that I talked to said to call back in a week and he gave me a case number. After waiting a week, I called and explained my situation. Well, this time, without taking any info from me, he just told me the other rep put me on the waiting list and that I would be contacted. So why did the first one tell me to call back...?

And what if I'm not home when they're trying to contact me?

The entire bezel (back LCD cover including the hinge covers) is one piece, so they would have to replace it all. Buh bye scratches when your hinge covers get replaced

It has been about three weeks since my first call too.

I was on the list only since Aug. 14th. I called yesterday after reading the Anacondas last post(#199). The guy I was talking to had to put me on hold four times then oddly eneough claimed he just then recieved an e-mail regarding the parts and how to handle the situation, then he issued me my rma#.

They are slipping

After reading about the fast response, I called to get a return box. On the 3rd day, they tell me that 'something went wrong, it has been escalated, and it will be sent soon'. I'm getting close enough to the time when I MUST have the thing with me for work that I'm starting to look for a replacement.

So, anyone else noticing a real slow response time from these people, and once again, are these cracks merely cosmetic or must they be fixed?

So should I call them back?

I think you should call them again. It can't hurt. They are sending me a box, I don't see why they wouldn't send you one. I believe that depending on who you talk with might make a difference as some techs seem to go a bit more out of thier way to help than others.

I will let you know how long it takes to get the return box....Called 8-19

I'll say it calmly: They are cosmetic...there, phew...

Hey all, I can now happily (...yeah, right... ) announce that I have joined the ranks of the cracked hinges. I've only had my 6809 for a single month (two weeks of it getting an RMA which did absolutely NOTHING - if you want to know more look up my game problem thread under tech support) and, just getting back from vacation, I open my laptop up, use it for a second, and close the lid. Just as I start to close it... *crack*. Like everyone else says, it does only appear to be cosmetic, nothing's loosened up on me. However, when I close it, the crack does tend to seperate slightly when I apply pressure to it... oh well...

Later...

Not to be rude, but in no way is a stress crack cosmetic (which this is.. a stress crack).
Well in this case it essentially is. The hinge cover ended up being the wrong size for the hinge.
... which then causes a stress fracture, which will eventually weaken the whole hinge system. If something breaks becuase it is being stressed like that, its not cosmetic..

Also- why was there never a full recall? Essentally, every laptop made is flawed, and it was allowed to go on....

Anaconda,

Any possibility we could get a picture of the hinge internals? As in, how does the metal hinge attach to the lcd screen? I know the hinge as it attaches to the notebook body is metal on metal.
I'll see if we can, but we'd probably have to pull apart one of our notebooks here to do that. I'll ask.

Think of it this way. The problem lies in that there was actually stress on the plastic, which of course there shouldn't be. Once it cracked, the stress was relieved and the metal hinge began to work in the way it should, taking all the stress.

Perhaps, but something that is broken like that has had ALOT of stress on it... its now prone to break with less stress, becuase the material has been weakened.

And just becuase it has broke from stress, does not mean that it still inst under stress... if anything, it will be more suseptable to stresses... Once something is broken, it will never be as strong as it originally was, which leaves it open to future failures....

That's why eMachines replaces them with the proper hinge covers. Remember, it is not the hinges that are breaking. It is the hinge covers. These covers are not supposed to have any purpose at all except to hide the hinge mechanism. The problem is, they were made too smal, and the hinges were rubbing and pressing on them, causing them to crack. The new parts eMachines is now replacing them with are big enough to keep this crack from occurring again.

What is the return label?

Is it the little FedEx thing that you write your address on? And you stick it over the original label that was on the box?
