Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 12

I'm in love again

Er... or... Anyhow, the shipping box showed up Monday AM, I sent it back Monday PM, and on Thursday I have my 6809 with new hinges! That is fast. Sad that it was needed, but fast repairs!

Thats great k.s. I shipped my 6805 Tues eve so maybe I will get it back tommorow.

Just got mine back and it seems to be working even better than the original one was. Now when you slide the button across to open it, it pops up a little on its own. The old one never did that and it would just get caught about halfway so you had to hold the button across while lifting up. Now when I open and close it, it doesn't feel as tense either.

Now this computer is the best thing I've ever owned.

another case of hinge cover crack issue

Just recently went back to Best Buy to exchange my 6810 for a new one after the crack grew large after just having it a couple of days. Bought it on the 8/17/04, crack appeared on the 8/21/04 and returned for exchange on the 26th. since I was out camping over the past weekend, i didn't get a chance to put the lappy thru its paces. I thought it was looking good until last night after about 4 cycles of open and close, a slightly visible subsurface crack is beginning to appear.

This is getting to be an annoyance, since i've updated it to service pack 2 and set up several custom settings. Now I'll have to do it all over again until I can get one without the crack issue. Such a nice machine tarnished by bad QC and QA on the part of the cover manufacturer.

update on second m6810 hinges

Well folks, the crack on the left hinge is starting to propagate already. I can see the fine hairline crack begin to reveal itself again.

Should I take it in for an exchange or have Best Buy work on it through the warranty?

I'm getting tired of un-installing all the pre-loaded junk software that comes with the machine and re-installing xp pro and sp2. for some reason xp pro takes like 2 hours to load on a upgrade.

Also, any suggestions on how to clean install on new hdd with xp pro?

While Best Buy is only authorized to swap out the unit, eMachines will replace the hinges and the cover, leaving the rest of your system intact. The RMA process only takes about six days -- might that not be a better way to go for those who don't want to endure the re-configuration process?

I suggest you send in your machine to emachines so that they can fix the issue. Don't exchange it at Best Buy, when they could be giving you another machine with the same hinges. The problem has been identified and isolated, but only at Emachines. There are probably numerous M68** machines at Best Buy warehouses with the same defective hinges. If you want, check the serial numbers of a few of the boxes at your Best Buy and compare them to the serial numbers that have been identified as containing the faulty hinges. If you luck out and find one that's from a newer batch, then exchange it, but otherwise, I recommend you send it to e-machines... So far no one that has posted that they sent theirs to the E has come back saying the new hinges broke again.

Exchanging it at BB does nothing, because those same laptops have the defect as well. You need to actually get it fixed by emachines or you're going to keep having the same problems over and over again.

Before I send it in, should I remove my extra Ram? I assume I will get my same machine back that I send in, just repaired, but it sure would suck to lose my 1GB ram stick.

My only problem is the standard hinge crack

They shouldn't remove it, but it wouldn't hurt to remove it (and its quite simple).

Welcome the newest member to the "Cracked Hinge Cover Club". Mineboth decided to break simulaneously. I had expected it soon, as my hinges have been creaking rather loudly the past few days .

Well, after 5 months, I have finally developed the infamous "hinge crack". Contacted eMachines 800-number and they sent out the box. I am in the 5 day waiting period to get my notebook back and have to say that so far, I have been fairly impressed with eMachines so far.

Just hoping that nothing else will go wrong with this great laptop.

My problem started two months ago, with a brand new 6809 from best buy. It developed a crack in the left hing after one week. They replaced it with a 6811. When I got it home, it had a crack in the left hing also. Best buy replaced this one with another new 6811, this one had display problems. best buy replaced this one with another 6811 witch started locking up after 1 week. they replaced this one, with one that had a crack hing right out of the box. They told me they me,I am the only person that has had complaints, with this model. I have had about 8 replacements, for various defects, also I want to let every body know about another problem, the modem will suddenly stop working and disappear from your device manager, you have turn the laptop off for a couple of hours, then the modem will show up again in device manager, I wish the best of luck to the people who have one.

I got as far as removing the 6 screws under the black rubber nubs but couldn't get much farther than that. From personal experience the LCD casing is usually held together with interlocking plastic tabs, which should not require as much force as I was using to seperate. Anyone have any ideas? Anaconda?

What if i'm living abroad right now? I purchased my 6805 back in february but i'm now living in Argentina. I don't expect to go back any soon. The crack is actually small, will i be able to stop it from getting bigger by using duct tape or super glue? Will that void my warranty?

Greetings,
If the sight of it doesn't bother you, to make sure you don't void the warranty, just leave it alone. It is purely cosmetic and does not cause the hinges to "loosen".
thanks, that was fast..
i'm thinking about the possibility to send it back somehow or go back to the US before february.
The duct tape looks fine to me, if it doesn't get any longer, i can live with that.

They won't let me pull one apart unfortunately

I'll look at one again to see if I can figure out just by looking at it how to do it.
