Cracking Hinge Repair

I sent mine on a Monday to Emachines (via the prepaid fedex box they sent me), and got it back Wednesday via Fedex. 2 day turnaround = can't ask for more than that!

Also sent mine on Monday and was hoping to get it back tomorrow. Apparently it hasn't even been logged in yet though . Glued to a desktop for the time being

I sent my 6805 in Monday morning and was not logged until yesterday. I called emachines and they told me I wouldn't get it back until next Wednesday at the earliest. Talking to the tech he said that my lcd screen was scratched, but I know it's not as I took good care of it. It was a perfect screen with no stuck pixals. It better not get changed out for no reason.

I'm starting to wonder if they had a mixup at their receiving center that is causing the delay.

Hey Spud,

Thats not good. See my post about the service I recieved from Emachines. TOTALLY opposite what is happening to you. I cant believe how QUICK they got my laptop back to me!

Anyway. Good luck with yours.

Not only do I have the cracked hinge, that I didn't notice until after I called and got the shipping box because my screen is flickering, sometimes badly. Anyone else having this problem and what are the likely causes and how is it fixed. thanks
post #266 of 636

Tell them about it

You have to fill out the form in the box. Include a message about the flickering. My M6809 had both problems, sent it in once, both are fixed (going on 2 months now). I suspect they replaced the entire LCD.

My "cracked hinge" experience:

My m6805 is about 6 months old. I bought it April 1, 2004. The serial # starts with N3042. I had no hinge crack until about 2 weeks ago. I called eMachines, prepared to argue with them over this, but was pleasantly surprised to find that they simply gave me an RMA # without grilling me first. I sent my laptop in on Friday after 4:00 PM and received it back on Wednesday fixed. It looks great and my hard drive was not reformatted.

I am really very pleased with both eMachines and my m6805. My only current complaint is Windows XP SP2 had to be uninstalled because of various problems, including some software not working properly, and Windows not shutting down properly. I had previously flashed the m6809 bios and that made SP2 work, but I flashed back to the original bios before sending the laptop back to eMachines. (I was hoping that while they had it, THEY would upgrade the bios.)

Over all, I do not regret buying this laptop. It is awesome!!

They did that for me...

I wanted to thank everyone on this fourm. I too have a M6809 with both hinges cracked. As recommended, I called eMachines customer support. Without waiting on hold, I was assured that an RMA box will be sent and, in short order, the faulty hinges will be replaced with the newer, stronger hinges. I was told that a 6 month production run got the bad hinges. My computer was manufactured in March 2004 (SN: N3045...)

Hopefully, the repairs will be as good as the phone service.

That would be May, actually.

I have a friend that returned his emachines notebook to best buy for exchange a few days ago.
His new replacement already has a cracked hinge.
Do you guys think he would be better off returning it to emachines instead of best buy?

Why did you uninstall SP2 instead of flashing m6809 bios again?

Yes, send it to eMachines. I'm about to do the same. I returned my hinge cracked 6805 to Best Buy last week and brought home a 6811. The left hinge is already cracking. I think I'll just send it to eMachines this time. No sense in bringing home another one that will crack. Most who have sent theirs in seem to have good things to say about the eMachines repair job, especially a fast turnaround time.

Now I am hearing that Best Buy will soon be getting the new emachine models for 4th quarter 2004.

Check the Best Buy web site, they are sold out.

So maybe it would be better to wait another week or so and see about upgrading at Best Buy instead.

yup...i am now a second time cracker. it's a horrible condition i can't seem to shed. i'm glad to know there others out there like me...lol

so yeah here's my story: bought the m6810 at bb in aug. it was great i loved it and then it had two cracks, brought back and upgraded to the m6811, it's not even a week later and it has a crack and it seems to actually be slower and have glitches.

i do have a question however...can you upgrade without paying the difference? i know it's a stupid question, but i had to pay but i thought i saw someone saying how they should wait for the 6813 to upgrade. and yeah. i don't know.

i am frustrated however, about having to LIVE at best buy or so it seems. i've had horrible experiences there...having to wait litterally an hour before any service and this was to get a replacement and when i went in and boughtmy first one it was horrible as well, so i really don't want to have to keep going there for a cracked hinge.

...well.. that defective 6 month production run can't possibly last forever

seeing as how Best Buy online is sold out, i'm hoping that we'll soon see this problem go away

I flashed the bios to install SP2. I don't have to uninstall the bios and reinstall the old one before I send it back to emachines to get the cracked hinges fixed, do I?
thx

I have a quick question for Anaconda, or anybody who would know. My M6810's hinge crack has just started to emerge (about 3-4 weeks after purchase), and I already have a lot of personal stuff on this laptop. Nothing too important that couldn't be replaced (XP Pro, Linux, some apps, and some unique software which can be offloaded to CDs/another computer), but replacing it would be a helluva lot of trouble on my part. So, is there a way to know whether or not eMachines will power the system up and reghost the hard drive to the dissatisfying factory specs, or is there a way I can ask them not to?
I believe they will offer you something like that.
Just call the customer service and talk to them.

I just purchased my M6811 today and guess what?
Yep, I'm a cracker.

Every other M6811 in the best buy store was made the same month as mine so i decided to call emachines customer service.

The lady asked me if there was any important info on the drive that I would need but since it is new I said no of course.
But I am sure that if there had been she was going to offer me something... maybe..

I also asked about the cracked hinge problem in general and she said that they have developed a new and better hinge so I would be much better off sending it in to emachines instead of just trading for another machine at best buy that would no doubt have the same problem.

So i'll just play around with it a bit over the weekend and I should have my postage paid box on tuesday or something.
Hopefully the whole thing will take a week or less.

I'm just glad to go ahead and get mine fixed now before I load it up with stuff.
