So, is there a way to know whether or not eMachines will power the system up and reghost the hard drive to the dissatisfying factory specs, or is there a way I can ask them not to?
Sorry didn't see this post when it was posted... So you probably already saw this but for those who don't know...

There's a form in the box you have to fill out some information on. There's a space to mark that you do or do not give them permission to reformat the hard drive. So if you don't want that to happen simply mark it.

Sent my one week old 6811 in on Monday. Got it back this morning! All is well. They did the hinge crack repair and nothing else as far as I can tell. Great service!

Oh okay, cool. Maybe I'll do that soon then.

I just got a bit nervous about notebook repair when a "reputable" company repaired my stepfather's boss's laptop, and they ended up swapping them, sending critical Florida state information (get this) out of the country. Sufficed to say, that's enough to make anyone nervous.

Yahoooooo!!!!

I just got my notebook back and it looks GREAT!!!

I talked with at least 2 different Customer Service reps at emachines that confirmed that this is a new stronger hinge replacement.

Well.. now I guess it's time to start looking at those 7200rpm drives & 1gb sticks...

I returned my 6805 today to best buy in Waterloo, Iowa. They did know about the recall on the cracked hinges, but my computer did not fall into that catagory (serial number). I did have the cracked hinges, and they traded it out for a comparable laptop.
The laptop I received is a Gateway 7405GX. It looks identicle (sp??) to my old emachines, other than the labels say gateway now. It has an amd64 3200+ processor, the ati radeon mobility 9600, 512 megs ram, a 8x dvd+/-RW drive, and an 80 gig hard drive. (see http://www.emachines.com/products/pr...Machines_M6811)
The gateway has a faster dvd and a slower cpu then the m6811...
Sounds like gateway just took that computer and put their name on it. Hopefully the support from gateway (especially when it comes to getting new/updated drivers) will be better than it was from emachines.
I have searched the gateway site, using both my serial number and the model number, for information on this laptop. I have googled the model number. I checked beast buys web site. I cannot find any information on it what so ever.
I am in the process of installing winxp pro on it right now. The recovery disc is a single dvd, and as I was browsing it, it looks as if I will be able to install the 3rd party software (power dvd, MS works, Nero 6, etc) from the dvd. I will start a new thread with that information.
The Best Buy in Waterloo, IA does trade outs on features, no on price. I asked the guy looking for a computer to trade mine out about that, and he said that here they go by features, that it is that stores policy.

emachines M6810

I just got an M6810, and as I've read I have learned that the hinge crack forms 3 to 4 weeks in. I have the best buy PSP, and have already been told that when I bring it back to best buy they are going to replace it, not fix it. SO I was advised to wait until the next line of emachines come out because the M6810, M6811 have already been discontinued and after a little research the only new emachine that is coming to best buy is a Semperon system, not an AMD64. I was wondering if anyone knew a rough guess of the next model line would have in it, or should I send it back to emachines to get it fixed every 3+ weeks since everything I've read have pointed to that there is no actual fix for this problem, or am I mistaken??

well add me to the list,....boo

since my screen is good, i just gave it a dab of ca glue..we will see how long that holds. careful though it is thin and can go through to the hinge, and set it.
i closed mine, added the glue and very very slowly raised it to keep the hinge moving and the crack shut.

Your screen is not replaced when the hinge covers are. Unless adding the glue voided the warranty, you should send it in to get it properly repaired.

You are mistaken. All of them since August are fixed. The ones fixed prior to that had parts from the same old (bad) batch put on. As far as a replacement, there is now a Gateway model very similar to the m6809/m6811.

Well Finally Decided

Well thanks guys I finally just decided to send it in and get it fixed. I called yesterday and they are going to send the box. But because of my SN being made in August of 04 it is yet to be determined if it was user error, or the infamous defect. The guy on the phone said that it was probaly the defect though. And I know it is... (everyone laughs at me because I have a metal laptop case) I'll keep everyone posted as to my experience just as all of you have.

UPDATE:

Got the computer back promptly with the screen replaced; so far no new cracks. Only down side is that the techs reformatted the hard drive (no clue why) and, of course, only re-installed the basic software. I spent an entire evening reconfiguring the laptop

Was it worth the trouble? Time will tell.

They look pretty much the same. They are supposed to be slightly larger, but I couldn't tell, seeing as I had nothing to compare them to.

Ok, I have a m6805 that was bought 6 to 8 months ago from BB. I purchased the extended 3-yr warantee on it.

Unfortunately, I have a semi-jagged crack on the right side hinge that extends about halfway though.

I am thinking of going to best buy to get a replacement, and an "upgrade" at the same time. I currently have a dead pixel anyway (although it is in the corner and not too noticable) so I dont have much to loose.

Do you guys think I should:

1. Wait until a newer model comes out (are more m68xx models coming out?)
2. Send it to emachines.

Thanks.
