Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 16

I feel like there's a broken record in the room. Best Buy no longer classes the eMachines models as DEVO (Defective Equipment Void of Operation), so you can't just go in and get an "upgrade". Even I can't, and I work there. Most Best Buys are employing this policy now because of everyone previously "trading in" their laptops for a higher model. What you can do is send it to eMachines, since your warranty isn't up, or have Best Buy send it in for repair (it will take longer through the second option). eMachines should have it back to you within a week or so and your hinges will be fixed.

I'll find the old thread Syarost started about the machines no longer being DEVO and stick it d.electro. That may help

Argh, why are there so many mixed responses of this throughout? Can anyone else confirm this?

Thanks.

Bought my M6805 from BB in Feb '04 and now, just after they quit DEVOing them, my hinges cracked....

Anyway, a couple of quick questions:

Never occurred to me they might reformat my drive. Anyone know why they would do that? Or how often they're doing that? I mean WTF, it's just a F-ing hinge that has nothing to do with the operation of the computer.

Has anyone had problems with the replacement hinges?

Will let you know what happens/happened as soon as I receive my Gateway 7405GX back from Gateway/eMachines.

What is the turnaround time?
For most on the m68xx, less than a week. Many people reported sending out on Monday, and getting it back Thursday of the same week. Mine personally was a week and one day (Monday to the following week's tuesday). Some have reported closer to 2 weeks.

It's usually within 5-7 days, but mine is taking a lot longer because of the holidays. I shipped it back to them on November 19th, and it's the 29th and still haven't received it back. Both Gateway and eMachines said it has to do with FedEx's shipping methods during the holiday rush.

Hang in there, buddy. I sent mine on the 19th and they just received it yesterday, the 29th. So, hang tight. I feel your pain.

I'm sure you'll receive it back before then. They seem to have received yours faster than mine, so I'm sure you'll be fine. If anything, call them every few days and keep up to date with what's going on with your machine.

I sent mine back on Friday, November 26th. eMachines recieved it from FedEx on Monday the 29th, but did not check it in until Tuesday the 30th. Hopefully I will get it back by Friday.

This is the second round trip to eMachines. I sent it to eMachines on the 18th of November for a replacement of the Motherboard (Bad Video Card) and repair of two cracked hinges. I got it back on Monday the 22nd. Pretty Fast. Unfortunately, even though the video and hinges were fixed, the USB was hosed. Hopefully when I get it back this time, everything will be working.

Check out my crack:

I've had my 6805 for almost a full year. I checked for cracks a couple months ago when I heard of the problem. Didn't find any and of course then I hear the DEVO status went away shortly after. I just started getting more use out of the laptop, mainly browsing in my living room.

Today I checked again for the hell of it and there it was, a huge crack that must have recently appeared. I thought I was in there clear with the thing lasting so long, guess not.

I have the BB extended warranty. I also have that best buy paper notice about the situation.

So what should I expect when bringing it in as of now. I'd love to have them replace it it, the laptop is already fast enough for me but it would be nice to have a new one that atleast supports WinXP SP2. Plus the damn scroll pad on the touchpad goes on and off for no reason, and trying to turn it back on in the options the box stays unchecked and then suddently works later.

Anyway, any tips I should know when bringing it in?

Just talk with a manager before bringing it over to the tech bench (or if the guys at the tech bench...GEEK Squad...are giving you a hard time) and, usually, they're nice enough to go ahead and authorize an exchange. At least, in my store, that's what they do, and the DEVO status is supposed to be company-wide.
And this DEVO status is no longer active company wide, right? They'll just plan to ship it back to emachine? Or did you think they'd exchange it for something else?

The DEVO status is still in effect, just some stores are actually being lenient and just letting customers exchange in-store. If you go to the store and the GEEK Squad and the managers say no to an exchange, then they will (what I would guess anyway) send it out to eMachines for repair/service. If they don't send it there, then they send it out to a third-party authorized repair depot where they service the machines.
