Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 18

Both Hinges on mine are cracked (M6810). The right one is severe, and the left one is hairline. My machine is about 4 months old and has never left the house. I guess, really, I am not surprised or upset. I purchased the cheapest notebook with the most options and really it has performed beyond my expectations. Nonetheless, I will be returning it for a fix....

I did notice that best buy isnt selling emachines notebooks anymore though, I wonder if this is the reason.

My dad just bought an emachine m5405 from Best Buy yesterday. And Gateway bought emachines and renamed the m68XX series to the Gateway 7405GX with minor case modifications, but still made by the same people, arima computers I hear.

So they haven't stopped selling them, they're just under a new name.

In this morning, when I took out my M6805 from bag, I found that both side of the monitor hinge cracked. I am not sure when it happened. I bought it from best in February from Bestbuy, it is still in one year warranty. I don't know what to do, to argue with BB or with eMachine. Any suggestion is appreciated. Happy holiday!

Do you have a Best Buy warranty? If you call Emachine, they'll ask what serial number it is to see if it's covered. If they say it's not, you could probably speak to a manager and he'll approve it. From there, they'll send you out a box to mail it to them and everything should be done and sent back in a week I hear. But it might be worth a try at Best Buy to see if they'll exchange it like what happened to me (if you have a warranty). If they only offer to service it, then it will end up going to emachines anyway and take twice as long through Best Buy than if you dealt with them directly.

I have talked emachine about the hinge crack of my M6805. I was told that a box would be sent to me in which I could sent it to emachine for repair. But I just update the bios from 0f02.p00 to 0f07.p00 for one weeks to install the SP2. I want to know whether I need to restore the Bios back to 0f02.p00, since the Bios change might violate the warranty. Thank you in advance. Have a nice holiday!

Happy holidays, dude. Yea, it's definitely recommended to reflash back to the original BIOS (do a system restore to completely remove SP2, but back up all your files before you wipe your hdd) since upgrading the BIOS yourself does, I believe, void the warranty. eMachines will deny you service anyway even if it doesn't violate the warranty because it's not "original specification", and that would definitely be a waste of time.

well, after all this time I can't believe it but I got a crack in my "repaired" hinge.

everything's been fine for the last two months since emachines did my repair.. but when i took my notebook out of the bag a couple of weeks ago i noticed the crack had returned.

it's purely cosmetic as most of you know.. but still

since I have a feeling this is going to recur I guess I'll let BestBuy handle it this time and possibly eventually move to a different model..

..such a shame

I have to admit, I can't believe people would put up with the hassle and wasting of time over a cosmetic flaw.

God knows I would never have the patience or desire to be without my computer for weeks because of a cosmetic issue like a cracked hinge. Which I can't even see when using the laptop.

What is the result of the hinge crack eventually? It is just a cosmetic issue crack or will result in the notebook function?

I think I read some people reported it will continue to get worse, eventually exposing wires, or pieces falling off.

My laptop is secondary to my main PC, so I can got without for a while here and there. And since I have a Best Buy warranty, I wanted to get some use out of it, which turned out good moving from a 6805 to 7405.

Yeah, there are too many downsides to them. The companies should realize that who cares about more brightness if you can't see it because of reflections. Most noticable in office settings and especially outside. Now with the sun already dimming the screen you have to deal with your reflection.

I have the same question. I bought mine in August '04 it cracked approx 3 or 4 weeks later, I really haven't paid much attention to it other than I tend to be carefull when opening/closing I really haven't noticed any mechanical issue to this point.

"I think I read some people reported it will continue to get worse, eventually exposing wires, or pieces falling off".

IS THIS TRUE???

I have the three year warranty through BB what exactly is that going to get me?

I can assure you of one thing they have not felt the raft of Tofast4u.

Really I don't think it should be much of an issue if you purchased an exteneded warranty with them, They should honor that even if it remains replacing the entire machine.

How long time does it need to repair the hinge?
It took over two weeks through BB, some people have been dealing with emachines directly and getting faster service. The cracks on my 6805 were purely cosmetic, and at no point did I see any wires or have any parts falling off. The only reason I bothered to get it repaired is I smelled smoke and didn't want to take a chance that the MB or graphics card was frying.

I paid good money for the extended warranty from BB and I'm going to get my money's worth out of it. I plan on dealing with them just so that they have to count those repairs, so that I can exchange the whole laptop before it expires.

That's one reason I brought my 6805 in to BB to get my moneys worth from my warranty and to add 1 repair to the total needed for replacement. But they offered to replace it to begin with.

I sent my cracked M6850 out at last wednesday and got it this monday, it took 4 days. I am satisfactory with the service of eMachine. And I also got 90days warranty for the repaired part. After start the laptop, I surprisely found that the bios was updated to a new one from oFo2.Poo to oF08.P00. The bios of graphic card also was updated a new one. So I need not to update the bios by myself. That is great!

Bad news again.

I had both hinges crack on me and I sent the laptop in via emachines about 4 months ago. No problems, and the laptop was fixed.

Just now, I looked again and the left hinge is cracking again! What's up with that?
Anyone else have this problem agian? I bought my laptop through jr.com and bought the emachine extended warranty.
I just got off the phone with emachines and they are going to repair it again.

it kind of scares me now that it's getting fixed for the 2nd time for the same problem...

If it happens a third time, do I get my money back, or what?

I'm not sure if emachines has a lemon policy on their standard warranty, but you can always check with you state lemon lemon laws.
