Lucky guy, they never even gave me that option. Even though I told them that I smelled smoke coming from my machine. Oh well, maybe the next repair...at the rate new models keep coming out I'll probably end up with a 3700+, 1GB, 100GB HD with a radeon 9700 by the end of the year.

Well, My M6809 is in BBuy for the big hinge repair job. It's been a week and I called for status and they said they will probably be another week as they are gutting the machine and putting it in a new case.

This is my second M6809 as I returned the 1st one in July for cracked hinges. When I get this one back I'm going to take to Customer Service and exchange it for a different machine (probably the HP ZV5340). It's the same price as I paid for my eMachine. I'm happy I got the extended warrenty!!

I know some folks don't care for the Gforce video card but I like the better speakers, the better control of the touchpad, the 100GB HD and the 64 3400+. Any comments/input is welcomed as I've learned a lot from this forum....Thanks

I had brought in a print of the BB statement for employees about the problem, which says to DEVO the unit. I think they offered me the exchange based on that before checking on an update because then it was no longer DEVO. When doing the exchange in the return area, the employee couldn't go further and mumbled that this isn't DEVO it's service only, but they never asked me anything more they just kept overriding each step to DEVO it.

So yes, I got real lucky. I did do a long step by step post on what I did in hopes other people about to take there's in could get lucky in the same way.

Has anyone got their money back from Emachines themselves? I have the emachines extended warranty and I am on my second fix. On the website for the extended service plan, it states:

A "No lemon" policy - if your product requires more than three repairs we will replace it FREE

Just wondering if anyone had this experience?

There is nothing wrong with the GPU in the HP, unless you are going to be doing 3d intensive taks. If it meets your needs, go for it! Besides the GPU, it looks like a nice machine.

Well, Got my machine back from BBuy and it looks and works great. Took it over to Cust Svc to ask them what my options are because I know they are probably going to crack again and they stood by the No Lemon clause and I have to bring it in for 3 repairs and then they would replace it with a like priced machine that could be another manufactures. Will have to wait and see.
Thanks for the feedback.

The Best Buy Extended Warrenty plan has exactly the same No Lemon clause (3 repairs required) but it looks like they will replace with a similar priced machine, not just an eMachine/Gateway. You can also upgrade to a more expensive one by just paying the difference.

I just bought a zv5340 and am thinking about swapping for a Gateway 7422GX. I am unhappy with the Dvd-burner(2.4 x) 16x CDR other than that it is a nice machine but I think you would get more bang for the buck with the 7422GX as it has 1gig mem vs 512 8x DVD burn, better video with a 20 gig less hd.HP also has one less usb port

E-machines does good!!

Yet another repost…

My HD died last Thursday and I had a cracked right hinge. My 6807 is not in the ridiculous date allowances posted about. Cosmetic or not I asked that it be fixed on this “still in warranty” machine, thank you.

Arima in Houston replaced the HD, fixed the hinge AND updated my BIOS to 0F08.P003308! No hard feelings here.

I did leave a note asking for the above, and described all that was wrong with the 6807 on a note left under the screen with a “thanks in advance”.

I’m back to a re-image session with my Ghost DVD’s. At this time I do not much runtime with the 0F08.P003308 BIOS. I now get a big “e” at beginning of boot. Since Arima installed this BIOS, I would have to venture this is the official version for the 6805/07?

Update:

I have re-installed HL2, PShop and a slew of other apps, so far no problems. I’m going to hold off S.Pack 2 for now but nice to know I can install it if needed without disabling or moding any other part of the OS.

Hopefully “Erima” does the right thing and releases official Bios update without people having to resort to other means for warranty and system stability in the long run.

I hope to get another year out of this machine before it's replaced. So far it rocks for my game and video needs.

Mike

I just got my M6809 back for the second time. Everything looks fine. But everything looked fine last time as well (which was about 4 months ago). Hopefully this won't happen again. I am anxious to find how many people are like me and have had the cracked monitor problem more than once...

I have had my 6805 for almost a year now and the hinges finally cracked. I don't have the extended warrantee. Will I have to pay for them to fix my hinges?
ahhh!! nooo! mines cracked! I hate to part with it for a few days for something kinda minor so I'll wait for something major to break or if the other side cracks. It looks like you can almost cover it up and fill it in with some silver paint. Anyone try this? Would it void the warranty?

Well, this sucks big time. I read about everyone on here experiencing a nice quick tunraround on the hinge repair when they sent their pc into emachines directly... well its' been a week and when I called them today, they told me to call back if I didnt receive my computer by next Tuesday!! Boy this sucks! I was hoping it would be quicker than this. The guy at emachines told me a hinge repair should take no longer than 7 days from the time I send it in until I day I get it back, but it doesnt look this will happen for me. (he then checked with his supervisor and the actual turnaround max is 7 business days, i.e. not counting weekends) Just a heads up for everyone out there sending in their pc, the repair shop is not open on the weekend, so be sure to send it in on a weekday so it doesnt sit in the warehouse all weekend like mine did! Oh well, at least the trembling and chills are stopping from being away from WOW for a week.... damn that game is crazy addicting.

I sent mine off on Saturday and got it back Wednesday. Nice quick turnaround. Since it was in thier hands anyway, I put a postit note on it to replace rubber foot that was missing. I got it back and now I only have 1 rubber foot left (3 missing). I'm going to call them to see if they can just send me a new set.
A couple of other things I noticed is:
The battery clock used to show that I had slightly 2 hours left on a full charge, now it shows, 1:45 minutes on a full charge.
I had to reactivate my Norton antivirus.
and the rubber foot thing.
Things that make you say hmmmmm.
Keep us posted on how the rubber foot thing goes. I also put a note in mine during hinge cover repair. I have two in particular that stil keep coming off and would love to know if I can just et some sent. The stickie is almost gone on those two

Thunder, there is no reason why you would ever need to take them off, why don;t you just use some super glue?

hinge cracks = dealbreaker

i've been researching and pricing lappys for months now.. and i had finally almost settled on the 7422GX - great value for what it offers, good performance, etc..

but, i gotta be honest.. i don't care if they offer a 17" PCI-E machine with 2gb of ram for $500.. what i see is a 26 page thread about the same problem - most of the posts i see are about the service time, best buy's warranty, etc., but everything i've read pretty much takes for granted the fact that the hinge(s) on your gateway are eventually going to crack.. maybe in 2 days, maybe in 2 months.

does anyone else here find this absolutely unacceptable? i refuse to buy a laptop with an almost certain guarantee that the screen hinge is going to break. i would rather save up and pay a few hundred dollars more for a machine than take the (good) chance that i'll have to deal with the grief of return/repair/customer service nightmare bs.

thoughts?

The hinge problem was due to the manufacturer, not eMachines/Gateway. Every machine made by Arima with that case (sold by Targus, Medion, Vodoo, and eMachines/Gateway) during the time period where Arima's machines weren't calibrated could possibly have the cracked hinges (and have been having cracked hinges)

The problem was discovered in July, and they worked on recalibrating all of their equipment from July to September (the last dates being reported with cracked hinges caused like this and not user caused damages). So far, none of the later 7405GX's and none of the 7422GX's have had the problem.

If there is anyone to blame, it is Arima because they did not discover the problem a lot sooner. But as I said, more recent machines have not had the problem.
