Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 20

Thanks, Anaconda - that was a very helpful reply! (not being sarcastic - i just really appreciate getting kind, helpful replies in forums, as opposed to being flamed)

can anyone else back up what Anaconda says about cracked hinges being a thing of the past? anyone have a 7422GX from best buy with a cracked hinge?

it might seem petty, but it really is a big deal to me.. if i can determine that the broken-hinge problem isn't an issue anymore, i'll be back on the gateway train! everything else about this machine looks pretty great.

No problem!

Well mine I've only had three days so I really don't count, but mine doesn't have cracked hinges.

I think it's time for a roll call *goes to check the other topic to see who got theirs early on*

Brb with an edit.

EDIT:

Rollcall time! Here are the users that got a 7422GX early on:

I have one of the last 7405s to come off the line, and I haven't had the slightest hint of a problem with the hinges.

Because super glue and plastic don't typically like each other. Super glue and the like many time will "melt" plastic. I have thought of using some type of glue to "permanently" stick them, but don't have enything here.

I phoned emachines support this morning and it turns out that the rubber feet are an item that they can't send out. The tech gave me the number for fee based support 18007335858.
It kind of sucks that they lost 2 of the remaining 3 rubber feet and they can't simply just send me a new set. I was impressed with the original turnaround but it's these little things put a damper on my opinion of tech support. If anyone has a source for these rubber feet please post it here. Otherwise, I'm going to end up swiping them from a floor model.

Try office max, office depot or the like. You may not find an exact replacement, but I am sure you can find same kind of rubber "dots" that will work. Getting some a little thicker may not be a bad idea anyway to keep a little better air flow under the machine.

Unreal... lets see it's been 10 days since I sent in my 6811 and I still can't get a straight answer from emachines as to when they wil send me back my pc. Apparently now they have 'escalated' the priority which is supposed to speed things up but an escalation takes 24-48 hours to go through. Fantastic. So far I must say I am not really a big fan of emachines customer service. No one can even tell me when they expect things to be done. They have supposedly been 'working on it' since last Tuesday. I can't understand how it takes this long to fix a couple crappy hinges that will probably need fixed again. Sorry about the rant but this is really ticking me off. I wish I knew it would take this long before I sent it in. I remeber reading about some people having a 4-5 day total turn around. Boy am I envious.
Hmm when did you send it in? A delay escalation can't even be submitted unless it's been in the warehouse for 10 business days (10 business days from when they recieved it). 10 days is the maximum it is supposed to be allowed in the warehouse, but it can take up to the 10 days to be complete.

Wow, now I really don't know what to think of emachines... just got my pc. Like 5 minutes ago. According to everyone I talked to at emachines, they told me it was still being worked on, but obviously it was finished last week and mailed out friday... kinda scary that they have no idea where a customer's PC is. Oh well, at least I got it back and the new hinges look nice.
Better to have them say it's still awaiting repair and get it 5 minutes later than for them to tell you it's on its way and wait another 10 days to actually see it...

Hinge Failure - Plastic Disintegration

I didn't think the crack was a big deal. In fact, I called in weeks ago to emachines and was told it was cosmetic. I told them I could live with it cause everthing else is great and I needed it for my work.

Today?... stress failure on the left hinge. And due to the disintegration of the plastic I can see what caused it... When I called they said the knew the problem well and would be replacing the entire LCD (fingers crossed thinking "please no dead pixels... again") with a new hinge design...

So, now I just need to completely backup my machine and migrate to a new environment so I can work, then off to EM it goes for repair/replacement. There's a lost day of productivity... (8 hours @ $55.00 or $440.00)

I will report back the moment I have it fixed or have some more info to report.

RaZor

PS - I still love my M6805... Anyone thinking about buying one should still consider it because earlier owners have helped them descover the only real flaw...

crack

well today on my m6810 i removed it from the case. and there it was. the dreaded (CRACK OF DOOM) .so needless to say my mood went sour instantly. if you dont have the crack fixed what will or could happen? i just really dont want to deal with shipping my laptop tothem and have it bouncing around like bricks in the back of a truck. then wait a week or two.. man i thought i was special and wasn't going to have this problem.. I guess i wasnt so special after all.. 8(

I have a m6809 that had the cracked hinges. Sent it in and got it back. (It was about 2 months ago). It looks like whatever tool they used to put the new covers on kinda messed them up. Also the LCD screen seam on the side wasn't quite popped together. At least the upped the firmware, so I don't have to void the warranty. Hopefully they won't crack again.

sent mine out on friday the 11th and they recived it on monday the 14th..... now the waiting, the terrible waiting.....

When I bought my 7405GX Thanksgiving weekend, I remember asking the salesman about the bad hinges that plagued the eMachine models. I asked him several times, with witnesses standing there with who were about to buy the same machine, and he said everytime that the 7405GX was updated and that the hinge problem wouldn't appear in this model.

Fast forward to January of 05, not even 2 months after purchasing the 7405GX, and my left hinge is cracked. You can see it going right through under the cover. I went back down to the store where I bought it from, and talked to the front end manager (not the actual store manager) and asked hime why on Earth is BB still selling a computer that is plagued by this hinge problem, then not standing behind the product and making the consumer be without their systems which for some of us means without our work computer? All he could keep saying was that it was cosmetic and wouldn't affect the performance of the laptop. When I asked him where he parked his car in the parking lot, he kinda looked stumped and puzzled. I said, "I needed to know where he parked so I could go out there, kick his door in, and then tell him that it didn't matter as it was only cosmetic!" What a load of crap. I do have the BB warranty, but personally, BB knows that these models are plagued by this problem. Not able to be without this laptop for the time being until my Wife's semester is over, I haven't sent it in yet to be fixed. Looking at it today, I noticed that the crack is getting worse on the left and is spider webing out, and now the right hinge has a crack starting to form as well.

lol ya, I feel ya SVT. When I went there I told them I just wanted to buy my 7422gx and leave. I spent like 30 min listening to the sales guy trying to talk like he knew something about computers of and trying to sell me overpriced bull s**t software that sucks. I explained to him that I'm Microsoft certified, have a associates in computer hardware, and am A+ certified. He didnt even know what Microsoft or A+ certified was so I told him just to give me the freakin puter so I can buy it and be on my marry way. That and its bad when I hear someone ask "Whats the difference between a Celron and a P4?" and all they can say is that a Celron costs less. Then people ask about AMD's and they say that their slow because there in the 2 Ghz range vs Intel 3 Ghz range so their slower lol. They are worthless to ask any technical questions, its fun to talk to them and ask them about BS stuff that doesnt exist.

Not anything overly spectacular, you having a M6811 that would have been made during the reported affected time period. But sorry to hear it in any case.

Does anyone have any made in October, November, or December that have cracks? (4A, 4B, or 4C in the serial #)

Mines 51 so made last month... I think Arima have gotten it finally right after it was reported July

Well thats not TOO bad of a turnaround for a big company since theres an unholy amount of red tape. Allthough it is JUST a hinge cover so I couldnt think I would be hard to reengineer since they have the original schmatics. I don't think I've heard of anyone with a crack in the 7422 yet so I'm guessing its fixed.
