Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 21

i would just buy some rubber feet from lowes or something place like that. is it worth the downtime over a rubber foot? plus the other all risk...

Just got my 6805 - opened it without looking for the crack - closed it, and there it was! I think it was there before I even opened the machine! I'm wondering - has anyone had problems with "funtionality" of the 6805 and the cracked hinge? It is really merely "cosmetic", or has it proven to be "destructive" damage, causing further problems?

I'm interested cos I don't really want to return it if i'm just going to get another with the same problem, but if it's just "cosmetic" I can live with it...

Shame tho - looks otherwise to be a very nice machine...

Think I posted this in the wrong hinge forum, so I will try here.

I got a question on my hinge problem. I posted a while back about the left hinge cracking, which I have done grown to live with, but a few days ago I noticed the right hinge cracked. Yea I have read that they both probably would crack over time, which I don't really care about the looks of the cracks as long as the rest of this thing runs right. My question is, the screen still feels the same as day one, not to tight, not to loose, no squeaks, so should I even bother trying to send it in? After reading all these post everyday, I have horrors of their support service. I have no other problems with the laptop, no bad pixels or nothing, just these dang cracks! *knocks on wood *

Would taking the front housing off the lcd and using red loctite and tightening the screws on the hinges up stop them from cracking any more than they done have?

Thanks for any responses in advance.

I would think not. eMachines told me that the reason the plastic cracked in the first place was because the hinges were too tight. I thought they were just replacing the top cover, but I was told that the hinges were replaced as well.

I went ahead and sent my 6805 back in to replace the rubber part. I didn't want to, but I couldn't find anything that really matched what was OEM so I didn't even try. When I called back to customer service, they refused to RMA it after they told me they would just a week earlier. A quick call to corporate took care of that problem. As I explained to corporate, I appreciated them putting the laptop back on warranty to fix the hinges, but I definitely expect the laptop to come back the same way it left. If it weren't for the fact that this particular rubber piece stopped the screen from contacting the touchpad, I probably wouldn't have said a word.

This time when the laptop is delivered, I'm going to have to open it in front of the FedEx guy so he can be a witness to anything else that is wrong with it.

My 3 1/2 week old 7422GX is cracked as well.
do you guys travel with yours? I've heard it is only cosmetic anyway. I don't open and close mine a ton either...if yours cracked I'm sure mine will too.

What's the best to do??

My 7405GX has the left hinge cracked since about 10 days ago;
but since it's very small at this stage, and hardly noticable, unless you know what to look for, I personally don't really care about a little cosmetic blemish.

I am afraid though, that it might become something big and ugly, and may eventually reach some kind of structural issue. How likely do you think it will spread into something much bigger. The most important question is:
In you guys' experience, is it better to try to hold out as long as it doesn't look too bad, and hope that it doesn't spread into something major; and maybe even try to get a straight replacement from BB once it's bad enough. Or should I try to stem the problem now, and send it in for the fix, knowing that it will be a long term problem. By the way, I have the 3 year service plan from BB.

If it just stays like this, I really don't care. The amount of time of backing up stuff, and working on a different computer (my secondary LT has only a 10" screen) definitely isn't worth it for me, if the crack is just going to stay the way it is. Or should I do a preventative strike, and send it in RMA right now??

Thanks in advance.

I would hold on to it for now. I sent mine into emachines for the same thing and was contacted back that the LCD was cracked. The LCD was fine when it shipped to them. Long story short is that I paid them $300 for the new screen two months later. And in the meantime all I had was a Dell 700mhz runninng 98. Wasn't horrible but wasn't any fun either. If you do decide to send it in take a picture of the whole unit with some sort of date to prove it is just a cracked hinge. That would have saved me time and money.

Thanks mantecca for your advise,

I'm sorry to hear your situation.

Actually, i sent it off before your reply, and I have already gotton it back today, and it looks really good. So, I guess I'm glad that nothing happened. And this was extremely fast service.

I also have a M6811 and at first it started out as a small crack on the left side then a small crack on the right, now the left side looks like crap and im scared everytime I open it up its going to break. So I finally called up eMachines today and they're gonna fix it, 3-5 business days is how long they said it would take. I will definately take a picture of the damage and everything else showing its in perfect working condition before I ship it off. I'm glad I found this forum or I probably would have just delt with the cracks! thanks guys.

I remember reading your thread about this. You got ripped off. Even without a picture to prove that it was not cracked when it was sent in, it doesn't mean that you have to pay for it. While you may not be able to prove that it was not cracked when you sent it, they can not prove that they didn't break it or it wasn't broken during shipping. They arranged, and paid for the shipping of the notebook back to them. Therefor ultimately, if it was damaged in shipping THEY are responsible for it, and must get the insurance money from the carrier. It is thier fault that they did not keep the box that the carrier wanted to see.

Had the same problem and Best Buy would not do a thing so I contacted Emachines and they acknowledged they had a maufacturing problem that caused the hinges to crack. They gave me a RMA number, sent me a box to return the laptop postage paid. I received the laptop back in about a week just like new and no problem since. The laptop was purchased in July, 2004

It never ends! ok so I got my M6811 back yesterday and I open it up and notice that they didnt put the small rubber pieces back on to cover up the screws on the LCD where they fixed the hinges. So I call Emachines up just to see if they could send me these rubber pieces and they said No, I have to send it back to them so they can finish the repair that wasnt finished when they sent it back to me. needless to say I'm a little pissed about this, but what am I going to do about it! at least their fixing it...oh well. got the new box today and will be sending it back to them this afternoon. they better send me something cool for all this BS. yeah right!

Are creaky hinges a sign of future hinge cracking?

I've had mine since Oct. 28th...creaky hinges and all...still no cracks. BUT...I don't open and close more than once or twice a day either. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
