Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 23

Not the Shadow case and completely different hinges.

Great, thanks.

There are these who'll want to fix the problem themselves. I see no reason for that; new hinge case is much more robust and "strain-free". Instead, you could end up with a situation where you have this warrantied notebook, try to repair it with do-it-yourself mentality and eventually might break the warranty, not to mention the tidiness of your own handwork. Glueing one's own notebook sounds really bad to my ear.

Will emachines repair hinge cracks on a laptop with an expired warranty?
Ok, last night I noticed a small crack on the right hinge. That made me a litle unhappy about it. Now I'm thinking about getting it fixed.

2 questions:

You guys that had it fixed(HD and others), how is it holding?

I'm out of the US now, and I wont be there in a while, I don't want to make expensive phone calls. So is there a way to contact their Service Plan area through the net?

Good fix/superglue/post-it tabs

I used some superglue and placed a post-it tab over the hinge.
The tabs do not stick, after the glue has set I removed them.
leaves a thin layer that is not very visable, and has worked for monthes.
hope this helps with the cracks.

Interesting idea RAWXERO I may try that when the time comes. I just don't trust emachines.

Well, I had my hinges fixed about 2 months after I got my unit (so last Sept they were fixed.) I dealt directly with eMachines that time. They SAID it would fix the problem permanently as it was some sort of new design on the replacement parts.

Fast forward to yesterday. As I was packing up for the day to head home from the office, I look down and low and behold, the left hinge is seriously cracked, and the right one has a hairline fracture as well. ARGH!!!!!

Since I'm going to be doing some travelling for work over the next month I can't really be without the laptop, and my 1 year eMachines warantee runs out at the end of June. Luckily I have the 3 year Best Buy warantee, so I probably will wait until after the July 4th holiday to drop it off with them for repair.

Just PISSED me off royally to see the cracks return...

Guess this will be strike 1 on the 3 strike lemon policy at BBuys...

well I suppose that would be a much better way to spend one of the 3 repairs then have a serious failure that you'd need to take it to Best Buy for repair for. You can use it this way until you have a chance to take it in, rather than the machine being crippled and unusable.

No cracks on my 7422GX.

so i have a 7410gx that has 2gig of ram in and was going to send it for repair. since the system has the hidden ram slot will they look at that.

I posted a few times about my cracked hinge on my 7405GX and that I could live with it. But yesterday a piece of the plastic actually broke off from it cracking from one side to the other. The other side has a hairline crack. I called today to have it sent in since if something else falls off they might blame me for not calling sooner. I asked if they could replace a key on the keyboard that fell off too. I hope I have a quick turnaround like you guys did, the lady said it would be about 2 weeks.

Some questions while I wait for the prepaid box...
Should I uninstall the Radlinker and the Omegadrivers so it doesn't look like I was overclocking it? Whats the the best way to pack it up to make sure nothing happens to it on the way there? Do they usually ask you to send the AC adapter with it?

When I send my 6805 in, I'm gonna do a backup and a factory restore. Privacy as well as professional courtesy.

Zanger, the box they send you will have everything you need to pack it.

Olyteddy,

Just remove your hard drive. If you're sending it in for a cracked hinge only, they don't need the drive. Cheapest and safest form of back-up available!

I had my 7422 for 2 months when my hinges cracked. I took mine back to BB to send it in. I took it in Friday before Memorial Day. I was worried that it would take forever to get it back. Just got it back yesterday, delivered to my door. I'm impressed with the timing.

Bought my 7405GX from Best Buy on 2004DEC27... and just now noticed I have a crack on the right hinge. I did not opt for the Best Buy service plan, so I will be contacting Gateway to have this repaired. Unfortunately, I use this laptop for work too so I will have to setup my old Toughbook for use for a while I guess.

I like the idea of just removing your HD before sending it off, good idea.

I have the 'flicker of death' and occaisional shutdown problem too, so I'll be sending it with the HD. Thanx tho, good suggestion.

Gah! My original repair was done at the end of Sept., 2004. I now have two pretty little identical cracks again and am now out of warranty

Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best when I call (corporate if I have to).

Well Thunder_PC a similar thing happened to me. My M6805 had the problem where the screen flickered on and off rapidly which went away temporarily when I repositioned it. At first this was a rare random ocurrance but it got worse so I RMA'd a couple weeks ago trying to beat the end of my one year warranty. Turn around was only 5 days so I was pleased. However I noticed a hairline crack in the right hinge cover when I was plugging the power cord in. I honestly don't know if the crack was there before I sent it in or not. I too had the cracked hinge covers fixed in Sept. 04 and at that time it was sent back to me without the rubber screen bezel screw covers which meant sending it back. To make matters worse the sceen started flickering on and off again a couple days ago. The factory warranty ends on June 28 but I have the Best Buy coverage so I think I'll take it in to them on June 29, maybe they can fix the thing right. I know Emachine/Arima/Gateway can't seem to get it right. There's no way they could have made a profit on this machine with 3 RMA's. It's such a shame these notebooks are plagued with these silly little probs because they perform so well. Anyway, Thunder_PC I hope you get things fixed and thanks for all your help on the forum.

I just checked my m6805 and it has two cracked hinges!!!!!!!

If its cosmetic I dont care.
I allready sent this back because of a dead pixels.

Someone on this board said that it wasnt cosmetic and eventually the screen would crack.

Is this true????

Thanks in advance

The hinge cover will eventually start chipping away, causing the entire bezel to no longer be secured to the hinges themselves. The LCD won't crack, except from possibly falling out after the bezels are no longer concerned.
