I asked if they could replace a key on the keyboard that fell off too. I hope I have a quick turnaround like you guys did, the lady said it would be about 2 weeks.

Some questions while I wait for the prepaid box...
Should I uninstall the Radlinker and the Omegadrivers so it doesn't look like I was overclocking it? Whats the the best way to pack it up to make sure nothing happens to it on the way there? Do they usually ask you to send the AC adapter with it?
Don't send your adapter. I wouldn't worry about uninstalling anything. The overclocking didn't cause your hinges to crack.

Should I glue it?

I havent read all 31 pages (Only read about the last 5), but my question is why doesnt the company just fix this problem, and if they have why are there still posts about cracked hinges? thx.

If they have ( i don't think any 7422GX machines have had cracked covers, so keeping fingers crossed), the reason there are still posts is people that still have older machines. My m6809 took about 5 months the first time, and about 8 this time to crack, so it's not something you will necessarily know immediately

I've had my 7422GX since early March and no sign of a crack yet. I had two 6809s and a 6811 that all cracked in the first three weeks. Of course, since I knock on wood every time I even think about the hinge cracks, all the surfaces in my office must be close to developing cracks of their own I'll tentatively say it appears they have corrected the issue.

So if you purchase the Gateway M680X now, you should not experience the cracked hinge problem correct?
m680 is a completely different case (and manufacturer for that matter)

it only affects the shadow case ( gateway M520, emachines M6xxx series, gateway 7xxx series)

Thanks Anaconda, nice to know that these laptops don't have that issue.

I thought I was the only one who had a cracked hinge... I am so glad I found this site...

(sobs gently) I can relate...

Are there any users that have had their computers for any length of time and NOT had cracked hinges and screen flickers? My M2350 is only about a month old and is still perfect, are these problems inevitable?
had mine since february, no cracks, no flickers

Is there any possibility that these machines might be suffering damage by some kind of rough treatment? I'm a "newbie" laptop owner but have had pocket computers (palm and pocketpc) for some years and have heard MANY people talk about how criminally and defectively fragile those devices are while I've suffered nothing more than one really minor screen scratch over all the years. These people rant that the devices are defective because the screen broke when they sat on them. (IT'S A POCKET COMPUTER AND IT WAS IN MY POCKET DAMNIT!). I'm not making a definate statement here, only raising the question. Could it be that the hinge covers are being damaged by some kind of impact injury? I can definately see how a laptop could imact a tabletop while setting it down, or dropping it into a case.

Scan through the thread and it should be obvious. There are many that were already cracked when removed from the box brand new. I personally treat mine like a crate of eggs, and am on my second set of cracks now.

Over one year old here and no flickers, but cracked for a second time. (crossing fingers and praying now that I posted that )

^ Thunder_PC, are you going to send it back for repair? We are on the same boat. I have extended warranty but not sure if I'm willing to send it again for repair.
I am going to try. I don't have the extended warranty, but fall in the original "bad batch" serial number range, so perhaps they will still take care of it. If not, I will just cannibilize it and part it out most likely once the cracks start physically chipping away.

I've never heard of this, is there a listing for all these "Bad Batch" serial numbers for the various models?

Has anyone sent in their laptop to emachines to get a hinge fixed without the hard drive? I would like to do so, but I'm unsure since their instructions seem to suggest that they want the whole package.

I don't remember the exact range, but it is somewhere in the forums (most likely this thread). Something similar to manufactur dates of Feb (March?) through July or August of '04. It can be determined from the serial number. The first set of digits in your serial number (ex: N3043) represent the month of manufacture. The "3" at the end designates a machine made in March.
