Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 25

So, if I'm reading that right my m2350 was made in may of '05, does that make sense? Also, I see reference to something called "eMacInfo2". What is that exactly?

I dunno, what's your first digits on your serial . I am not sure if they even follow the same numbering scheme, but I would assume most Arima built machines, specifically on the same chasis, would follow similar serializing.

May of 05, would be xxx55 in the first set of serial numbers.

Mine starts with RH355.

Well, I couldn't pass on the deal. It was either this or some cheesy thing from Walmart. "move over some" kind of leaves me lost. What I see is:

RH#######-###

well a refurbished serial number breaks down like this (i've explained it somewhere else haven't I?)

RH[####][###]-[####]
13 digits, first the RH, then 4 digits for the SKU, then a digit for the year, then two digits for the month, then 4 digits for the sequence # (how many they'd refurbished so far in the month when they refurbished that one)

I wasn't implying that refurbished are bad, just that they have a different serial # scheme.

Ok, according to that it would be Nov. 2004 which isn't totally unrealistic. The end is a three digit number for the sequence, maybe that goes to four for busy months?

As for the refurb thing, this one looked to me to be new other than one sticker (the ATI one) being a little loose and the generic cardboard box that it came in that said it was a refurb.

hmm wierd. there should be 13 digits altogether.

yah refurbished machines are that way for many different reasons. usually they look new because mostly they're returned for minor things (whatever they may be), which the warehouse repairs fairly quickly then ship them as refurbished.

7422gx Hinge Crack

i had been somewhat assured, by many posts on this forum, that the newer arima cases had had this problem fixed, and that newer 7422's wouldn't have the hinge cracking issue.

well, almost 5 months i've had it now and.. there's the hinge crack! left side, right above the lock, creeping slowly outward.

serial number indicates it was manufactured in january of this year (N3051) - is that right?

it sucks. i was really concerned about this issue and the only reason i went ahead and got the 7422gx was because the common word was that the problem had been fixed in newer units.

so, i've heard conflicting stories - think i can take this back and exchange it for a newer model/same price? (i have the BB extended service thingie) ..or am i better off just dealing with it/taping it up (hate that idea) ..OR should i let them ship it off for repair?

if they repair it, will it just happen again? that seems to be the story..

Newbie question, I have a 7410 and just found a hairline crack on the right hinge of my that isn't big but may spread with use. I bought the notebook 11/04 and it should still have the factory warranty and I bought an 3 yr extended warranty from COMPUSA. Questions:

Should I go ahead and contact Gateway to get the process of fixing the hinges started or should I contact COMPUSA.

Has anyone delt with COMPUSA and the coverage, I have read alot about Bestbuy but have not heard of any other dealing with a different retailer.

I have been reading alot about taking out your harddrive before you send it in but there isnt a definitive answer on this, should it or shouldnt it be done.

TIA for all your help guys.

Well it finally happened to me as well.
I had the hinge repaired last year, and just now I have the hairline crack starting to show on the left hinge.
Called corporate, and they said no problem repairing it even though I am a couple months out of waranty.

I advised them that I had added more memory in the hidden space and did not want to loose it or have the hard drive reformated. They said no problem they would not touch it.
I also let them know that I have a pixel perfect moniter and there is not a single scratch on the whole computer.

I will backup the hard drive and probably take the one gig out of the bottom, but I had such a time getting the one in the hidden slot that I am not sure I want to hassle changing it out to get the hinges fixed.

Should I trust them and hope for the best ?

I would hate to loose the one gig stick after all the hassles I had with the bad RAM issues I went through.

Hi all, new user here. Glad to see I am not the only one with cracks on the hinges. Both of mine are cracked, just notice it last week. I bought a refurb 6809 from Tigerdierct back on 4/16/05. Love the machine, but slightly concerned regaurding what I have read.

It seems, from what I have read here, that it is only cosmetic, which I can live with since it is a refurb and I got a good deal on it.

Anyway I have a question for Anaconda, since he appears to work there. Should the cracks cause the screen to no longer stay up, (which isn't happening yet) and the cracks are the reason why, is this a repair that eMachines is taking care of outside of the normal factory warranty for a refurb machine? Let's say 6 months from now, I am unable to keep the screen up and the cause is these "cosmetic" cracks on the hinge, will they fix it for free, do to the fact that it is a manufacturing defect? Or is this something I should take care of soon?

I am not really interested in sending it back, in fear of what I have read here from others who have, but would like to know what my options are regaurding the factory warranty and this being a MANUFACTURING defect.

Thanks in advance

dont anymore

no its the plastic covers for the hinges that are cracking, not the hinge itself. the hinge is metal and is under the cases. if they break all the way the metal will be exposed and could be a little wobbly, but will still hold it up fine

in any case, I'd say call up, get the notebook registerd, and get it documented that you have the problem. you can wait on fixing it if you choose, but at least get it reported. but with this problem I dont think they're being too concerned about warranty status for fixing the hinges. (the machines were only starting to go out of warranty when I quit so I didnt see any personally that were cracked and out of warranty)

Thanks for the quick reply Anaconda, I will contact them tomorrow and at least get it documented. The screen does kind of wobble now, but nothing I am too overly concerned with, but it does bring up another question. If they are just covers, and have no real structural function other than to cover the metal hinge, why would the crack cause the screen to wobble even a little bit? Not sure you can answert that or not, but thought I would ask anyway.

WEll, about 4 weeks after getting my Gateway 4530gz (m320) i just looked tonight and both of the hinges are cracked.

As long as this is just a purely cosmetic problem i don't care at all if they are there.

a project for tomorrow though is to put some tape over them to atleast see if i can minimize the cracking

I contacted emachine regaurding my cracked hinges, and they are sending me the stuff to send it back in a day or 2, but after reading through this thread here some more and on a few other forums, it seems that if you flash your bios to run sp2 it voids your warranty (which I have done.)

So my question is, does this apply to refurbs as well, since the warranty on a refurb is only 90 days on parts and mine is a refurb would this apply to mine? And if it does, where in the warranty does it say that flashing the bios voids the warranty?

I personally don't see how a design flaw in the hinge and flashing your bios go together but maybe somehow someway the bios and the hinge are somehow connected (being sarcastic).

Anyone have any info on the refurb warranty before I go through the trouble of uninstalling sp2 and then flashing the bios back to the original, only to have to do it all over after I get it back. That might be the deciding factor for me on sending it back or not.

Anaconda, could you answer that? I would hate to send it back only to be denied, because I flashed the bios, especially when one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Thanks in advance
