Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 27

Here's the thing...

I want to buy M6810 on Ebay for $625. They have no warranty or anything but are guarented to work. My question is with no warranty will Emachines fix the cracks on it for free or do i have to pay for it.

Lately I've been observing the progression of the crack, from the inner part of the hinge to the outside. IMO the crack is propagated from the simple act of CLOSING the lid, using the top of the display. For anyone with a hairline crack that looks like it's starting to open a little, you can observe this by slowly opening/closing the lid. When you open it, you should notice that the crack will be pushed closed slightly. When you close it, you can see that the crack widens slightly - putting more pressure on it and forcing the crack to get bigger over time. I have noticed that if I grab near the bottom, around both sides of the LCD panel and close it from there instead of the top, it doesn't appear to put as much stress on the cracked area. I'm hoping this will keep the crack from spreading.

Thanks for the tip, i never thought about closing it at a lower place, I automatically go for the top to close. Less creaking noise comes from the crack when closed from near the hinge.

Thanks,
James

Had my 7422GX 6 months now, noticed it flickering the other day, and now tonight I noticed the left hinge is cracked again.

I'm gonna call Gateway for an RMA tomorrow.

Just got off the phone with emachines. I have the cracking on both hinges. They are sending me a box. I have been out of warranty for 9 months and they are going to do the hinge fix for free.

I called about 5 months ago about thecracking hinge and the custoemr rep told me I was out of luck and to maybe try calling Tigerdirect.

So I told the rep I had read that this was a defect and that emachines was fixing these even out of warranty... not sure if that did it. Possible the other rep just didnt know... and this one did.

I have to say I am very happy about this and not to mention the hold time was less than 1 minute... cant beat that.

Well..

I got my 7405GX back in October or November, and I knew about the cracking hinge before I bought it. It cracked about 2 weeks after I bought it, only 1 side though.

I just sent mine in on Wednesday for the hinge repair and flickering screen.

I will let you guys know how it goes....

Hey everyone. I had the cracking hinge problem on the left hinge a few weeks back. Sent it to eMachines and they fixed it no problem. I just thought though, did they replace just the one cause it was broken, or both cause the other might break in the future due to faulty crappy materials/build?

They replace the whole cover for the LCD as they are part of it.

I sent my 7422GX back last Wednesday, got it back today. So far everything looks good. They fixed the hinge and no more flickering.

I shipped my 7405GX to Gateway via DHL....

Do they ship back to you DHL?

Is there a way to contact Best Buy through e-mail? I don't want to spend a lot on my phone bill(I'm at another continent right now).

Got mine back 2 days after shipping it. I shipped it at 4pm on monday. got it back in the daytime on wed. WOW!! friggin crazy. Hinges are fixed. I didnt realize they replace the whole top outside piece of the laptop. I was really happy about this because I had a couple nasty scratches that are now gone!! Flickering screen which showed up like 3 days before I sent it in is gone too.

Man they be quick!

They did reinstall their windows package on my hard drive though. But I kept my main drive which is a 7200. And put the old one back in after backing it up. So no biggy but just so you all know they just might erase your drive too.

Gateway - eMachines 7405GX Cracked hinges LCD back cover.

Hello Folks,

I'm reluctant about sending my laptop for fixing the cracked hinge. I have hairline cracks on both sides of the back LCD cover right where it connects to the hinges.

My concerns are:
1) I'm not sure if this minor cracks require repair. It seems to be a cosmetic issue more than a structural problem. Does anyone know for sure if this NEEDS to be repaired as it may progressively get worse to thep point where the LCD may fail?

2) Other than the cosmetic hair line cracks, I'm really happy with the functioning and performance of my notebook. It runs like a diesel truck. It's very cool, there are no hot spots and the fan barely turns on and is very quiet(partly thanks to the 130nm design of the AMD claw hammer CPU that has a larger die size allowing the heat to dissipate on the larger die as opposed to the more recent 80nm CPUs). The laptop never crashes on me. I haven't rebooted for the past 15 days. I run all sorts of software simultaneously and this is the first machine that has been so reliable. I upgraded the ram to 1.2GB and I think that was one of the only times I needed to reboot.) I don't have any swap file or hibernation file. I'm really happy with the machine, but concerned that I will get my harddisk formatted. I don't want to lose my settings. Took me months customizing windoze, you know how it is.

In short, does anyone know if the cracks will result in malfunction of the LCD? Should I send it in for repair?

No.

The cracks are purely cosmetic.

I've had eMachines fix my hinges and they again anyway.

My fix was to squeeze a very small amount of think super glue (CA adhesive) into the crack. then propped the lid open slightly to close the crack until it set. So far, perfect fix.

I got my Laptop back today, Fed Ex.

It had been a while, so I called Tech support on Monday and they said there was a "hold" on my laptop and that nothing had been done to it yet. They said I had to call the Corporate Office the next day since they were closed on Labor Day. I called the next day and they had put a hold on working on my laptop because I had removed the hard drive, even though they were just supposed to fix the hinges and the flickering. They offered to put another hard drive in for $275. Nice try. I just told them to do the repairs without the hard drive, as it was not necessary for fixing what they needed to fix.

I asked the guy if they were ever going to call me and let me know about the hold, and he said no. Good thing I called.

So far, so good with the laptop.

Thanks for all the replies folks, I haven't even received the box that Gateway supposedly sent 2 weeks ago. At this point I decided not to send the laptop in. I can't afford to be without it so long and loose my disk. Everything else seems to run so good that I don't want to take chance of opening the guts out and exposing to the elements. It just doesn't make sense why they insist on receiving the HD either. So for the time being, I'm just going to ride it out.

I was under the impression that eMachines was fixing the hinge cracks for free, even out of warranty.

Cpt. Planet Call them and ask about it. BTW, you could have asked at PimpRig...

CyberManiaK, try e-mailing their tech support those pics, that is most definitely not abuse, but it is beyond cosmetic.
