they fixed mine TWICE out of warranty. no charge. shipping and everything was taken care of. it's considered a "known issue" and should be covered out of warranty.

does the newer models with the new gateway top chassis (silver gateway box logo) have the cracked hinge problem? anyone? just curious thanks
I have an MX7525 that just got a crack on the left hinge (from the perspective of being behind the unit where you can clearly read the Gateway logo). It looks precisely like the crack on the original M6809 we had. Our local Best Buy kicks ass compared to what so many others have had to deal with and we could certainly get something done about it, but I think this time we'll just stick with it.

Over a month since I sent in my M6811. Futureshop says they're waiting for a motherboard from eM. So they're gonna fix it instead of replacing it. If they send it back with the hinges still cracked on it, I'ma gonna shit on the rug.

Geez, is Arima ever gonna get this issue resolved?

Bought a 2nd hand 7422 nearly one year ago. No problem of any sort but this morning, I just noticed that left hinge has got tiny crack like hair.
I live in Asia & knowing that the latest model still suffer the same problem, I will have to live with it and if ever it grows wider, I will just apply some power glue.

Well, got my M6811 back today. the hinges still cracked. future shop had it for over 5 weeks and sent it back with the hinges still cracked. did i mention the hinges are still cracked? They did however change the mother board. I have no idea why. i sent the laptop away because the hinges were cracked (again), flickering screen etc, they swap the motherboard and send it back to me with the hinges still cracked, after over 5 weeks. Did I mention the hinges are still cracked?
Buying this eM laptop was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made.

I just got done web chatting with tech support. I have to say, even though my machine was not under warranty, they still provided me a RMA and Packaging to ship it back to them.

AWESOME customer Service.

Best advice? Do not use this unit as a laptop! And DO NOT count on Gateway to REALLY fix this problem... All they are doing is slapping a "band-aid" on it, not molding new casing to prevent cracking. So, in time if use as a laptop, YOUR CRACKS WILL COME BACK.

The plastic case design is the cracking culprit. And when you RMA it they are just going to replace it with another top cover, BUT THAT WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM PERMANENTLY!!! The cracks WILL reappear! Opening and closing the top is what is making these cracks occur. My casing has cracked THREE times now. I sent mine off under RMA three times, twice for the cracks and once for the video card they fried. In my experience you risk more damage by sending it in, and in the final analysis they have not really fixed it anyway.

I am repairing mine myself this time because I can really do a better job, afterwhich it will be parked on my desktop henceforth, rarely used as a laptop. I will open the top, attach a second LCD monitor to be used to expand my WinXP desktop area, attach a wireless keyboard and mouse, and use it as a desktop!

My laptop is on its way back from being repaired for key impressions on the screen and cracks around the hinges. I have an M460XL. I noticed people saying that the cracks come back...has anyone had that experience with an M460XL? Thanks.

WOot, it went out on Monday, back on thurs....thats DAM fast...

All they did was replace the top piece....GOD BLESS MY BABY IS BACK!!

They also tighten the screen so there is no play anymore, before it use to have alittle free movement when the screen would kinda wobble.

My M2350 is over a year old and neither hinge shows any damage at all. I don't use it every day but do use it regularly. I am VERY careful with it, and never drop it into its case though.

My M2350 is also over a year old, the hinges are cracked, and the latches are broke so it won't lock closed. I use it every day and I guess I'm a bit rough with it.

My experience with cracked hinges

I thought I'd relate my experience - purchased a 7410GX last August and have babied it. Never thought to look at the hinges until I stumbled across this thread several weeks ago. I then took a hesitant look and found that one of the hinges had started cracking. Almost reluctantly, I contacted Gateway Tech Support and amazingly, received the shipping carton the next day. Shipped the system back on Tuesday after Memorial Day and received it Friday - amazing turnaround. I think Arima only swapped the top cover (I'm actually glad they left the screen alone as the original had no dead pixels), but I can second the earlier comment by someone who indicated that the new top panel had some mars and very faint scuff marks on it. The replacement looks a little more used than the original one, but oh well.

Also, I had to snap in two top-cover tabs on the screen which had not been fully seated - no biggie, fortunately...

Still, all-in-all, excellent customer service.

Aggh, I meant "7510GX", not "7410GX" in my post above...

I recently had Best Buy send in my 7405gx for the hinge crack, the screen also flickers when you moved it, like a bad wire and sometimes seems like it's about to die.

When it returned very timely it looked like a different screen, but not new, as it was dirty around the sides and some long thin marks across the center that could have been scratches, hard to tell without a cleaner. And the new lid had a huge 6 inch scratch across the top, plainly visible.

I also found a bunch of scuff marks along the edge on the left front of the laptop, above the speakers, that could have only been done with the laptop upside down open, so it wasn't me. About 2 inches worth, and deep enough to be able to notice how rough it is by touch when you use the laptop. Plus a rubber feet was missing too.

I kept mine in perfect condition, never left the house but only a few times. So to have it come back in that condition is a little disrespectable and makes you wonder if the delicate hardware recieved shocks from mishandling to put those scuffs. It's like taking you car in for an oil change and they roll it back out with a huge scratch across the hood and expect you not to care.

I had Best Buy do a redo to fix these cosmetic damages as I won't take that kind of crap.
