Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 4

I got my 6805 the week is was released and have no cracking, nor start of cracking. This has been cross country, and it gets used daily.

EDIT: Mine cracked....lol This sucks. So weird that i was just looking at it 2 days ago really closely, nothing, and now today there is about an 1/2" crack on left hinge. Doesn't affect anything other than looks. Being that i have a bright red dead pixel right dead smack in the middle of my screen, i would take a chance on a new screen

i suspected about the heat as well, but it has nothing to do with it (i am talking about the power cable input side where i have mine cracked (i will assume this is the left side and hence i poll left side crack) as it is far away from getting heated (the right side is more closer to the heat which it is still not cracked with me)

doesnt arima manufactures the m6809 and other m680x series? if arima uses the same specifications for other laptops brand then it would be interesting to know which are they and check with their owners if they have the same problem, otherwise it might be possible that arima building according to emachine's specifications and to keep the cost low they used some cheap materials

it would be better if we run another poll asking who owns emachines m680x series so we can find out how many users out of total have their hing cracked

RE: Cracked Hinges

Is this just an asthetic issue or is the lcd actually getting play when you open and close it?

Went to BB today to see if they would exchange my laptop (I have BB extended service plan). They said they would exchange it but they wouldn't swap out the hard drives. I argued with the head tech guy and the manager and they gave me some BS about they can't do that because it is against their store policy. I even said I would swap them but they kept giving me that line. I was furious so I took my laptop and left the store. I really don't want to go through the haste of reinstalling everything again since I just did it after having to replace the hard drive because it crashed or messing around with ghosting it.

I found it funny that the other tech guy working there told me that I should just buy another one, swap the drives and return the one with the crack. Of course no one was around him at the time and he said it under his breath.

I plan on trying another BB nearby probably tomorrow or Saturday. If they give me the same line, I will just have to exchange it and be glad that they let me do it and hope it doesn't have dead pixels or cracks.

Swapping drives

Why not just create an image of the drive? I find having disk image backups very useful for more than just something like this. It's great for recovering from major screwups, bad software installs, etc.

I have my drive partitioned into 3 drives:
C: main 15gb ntfs
D: storage 30gb ntfs
E: images 6gb fat32

I have the DOS version of DriveImage installed on E. I boot to DOS using a boot cd. Change to E and execute DriveImage. I can make an image of C or D and save it to E. I then burn them to DVD.

After you replaced your notebook that had a crack, has it happened again?
Anyone?
So far I've had this new one for two weeks now but I'm not so sure I should start slapping stickers on it just yet
post #69 of 636
I have had my replacement 2 weeks and so far so good, although, this one seems much stiffer when opening so im afraid its just a matter of time. I am more concerned at this point on a way maybe to help prevent the crack from forming again, possibly a lubricant or something.

BTW This one is #4. Two had stuck/dead pixels and 3rd had crack.

I took Curtisdr's advice and decided to go through the hastle and make an image of the drive so I can just exchange the laptop without swapping the drives. Well my experience with BB went from bad to worse today. I went to the other one in my area and they said they can send the laptop back to be repaired but they can't exchange it. So I proceeded back to the BB I went to on Thursday to get it exchanged, since they said they will do it when I was there before, today they can't exchange it because they don't have any more in stock and obviously are not going to get anymore. Also the closest BB to have that model is in PA and they would not have it delivered for replacement. I saw a tech with a M6809 box getting it ready for someone, it was the last one, I missed it by a matter of minutes. All they can do is send it in to get repaired which they said will take about 2 weeks. I asked them what other options I had and really don't have any. I even asked if I could exhange it for another model since I have had trouble with this before (I have had to replace the hard drive and now the crack). They said that they would still have to send it to the depot to determine if the cost would be worth replacing with a different model. I went back to look to see if any were in the cages and saw one that had a big sold sticker on the side but that was it.

So tonight I attempt to restore my computer from the image I made, using Acronis True Image, and the stupid program locks up when it reboots to start the restore, so now I am screwed. It must use Linux or something to boot up because that is how most Linux distro live cds have acted with this POS laptop. I really like the features and power of this laptop, however, I guess you get what you pay for and I never plan to buy a laptop from eMachines or Best Buy again. My last laptop was a $700 Toshiba, that I got every penny out of, the motherboard had to be replaced, just prior to the 1 year warranty expiring, but it took them less than a week to send me a box to send it to them, send it to them, repair it and send it back.

I do plan on getting it repaired at BB after I get a hold of a laptop I can use while they fix the thing. And I hope it cracks over and over again so I can use their "Lemon Replacment Policy" to get it exchanged for something more dependable.

I know a lot of you love this machine and have had good luck with BB but I guess I am not one of them.

Sorry for the rant but I am feeling much better now.

Any idea if spraying some electrical grade silicone on the hinges might stop the cracking from happening in the first place? Maybe someone who has a bad one that they are going to return anyway might give this a try?

anybody got anthing new responses from emachines??? id like to know..i emailed them..but no reply yet

As i said in my response above that i edited, i now have the same problem as everyone else. It's a "hairline" crack best i can describe it now, almost looks like a pen line right now, but it's also only about 1-2 days old. I bought this first week of Jan. and used it a lot without problems. I wouldn't mind sending it back in to get fixed, cause i have a dead pixel right in the center of the screen (very annoying) and i'll take my chances with another one, i can't imagine getting one in a worse spot than it currently is, so what the heck. My biggest thing is, if they DO replace the lappy (due to a full on fix or lazyness?) that i would lose my HD. I am one of the few who got a 5400rpm drive with their 6805. I guess as soon as i get my Dothan lappy later this month i'll send it in then, as to not be without a laptop for an extended time. I'll check back with how much larger my crack gets, and for updates from you all.

Mine its cracking too......

Ok....I discover the same problem in mine, I have it for two months and now Its cracking, you know whats the major problem here???.....I live in Mexico......I don't know what to do, I thik im going to try to fix it, so tomorrow I probably open it and try to repair the issue.

I think its only cosmetical, and my cracking its in the right side.

See you tomorrow....

Replaced

Well, I got my cracked 6805 replaced yesterday with a 6809. The only difference I notice is that the fan seems to run a bit more often and seems a bit noiser.

Now that I sit here, what I probably should have done was exchange the eMachines for something that doesn't have this problem. Ugh. A little late now. Well, maybe I'll prowl around Best Buy and see what looks good so I'm ready for when this one goes bad.

Just a quick question, guys. It is possible to loosen the screws which connect the hinge to the laptop case, on the ones which cracked? I mean, I read this forum and it seems to be when eMachines tightens down the screen, if they tighten it too much, the hinge cracks, so if that's the case, is it possible to loosen the hinge a bit? I'm planning on getting either a 6809, 6810, or 6811 in the fall, and if this works, I'll have zero reservations about the laptop. ^^

I decided to write an email to Emachines over this issue and this is the response:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting eMachines.

I see that you are inquiring if eMachines is aware of the common issue with eMachines notebook that has the same crack in the hinge even on careful use and if there is any plan to fix this common issue.

I am glad you took the time to write us and inform us regarding this issue with eMachines notebook.

According to our research, over a million of eMachines notebook that was being sold every year, only 1% has this issue with our notebook. However, the given information will be escalated to the right department and will discuss this issue for possible resolution.

There are many possible causes of this issue.

- Twisting the notebook screen on its hinges
- Closing the lid on a pencil or pen left on the keyboard
- Closing the lid down with great amount of pressure
- Holding the notebook by its screen and not holding it with two hands

As much as I wanted to further help you with this issue, however, you can call the eMachines Customer Care line at 1-801-401-1419, 7 days a week from 5 AM to 12 AM PST for possible warranty replacements. I apologize for any inconvenience but we are unable to arrange for warranty service or parts via email.

I understand that situations like this can be frustrating and I hope that the information I have provided above will be relevant in addressing your concern.

Should you require further assistance with your eMachines system, please feel free to send another message. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Lucky you, as you probably saw above I wasn't as lucky. How did you manage to get an 09 out of it? Did you have to pay extra? I was trying to get them to allow me to exchange it for some other model (not eMachines) but they didn't seem interested. Maybe I will try again when I take it in to be repaired. I saw a nice Toshiba in the "Open Box" case that looked pretty good, maybe they will trade for that.
