Cracking Monitor Hinge - Page 32

Well I havent been here either for a year or 2 and I have some happy news to share.

To recap, I started out with an emachines 6085 and after many returns I traded up(yeah right) to a gateway 7405 with bbs no lemon policy. Went through 2 maybe 3 of those most with hinge defects as well. To make a long story somewhat shorer, I had hinges crack again after almost 2 years and I called gateway to see if I could get my out of warranty machine fixed again because of the hinges and suprise they said yes. I sent it off this past Monday and got it back yesterday, Thursday, with a brand new cover. no charge. Fixed the day they got it and sent it back the next day. All was in perfect condition.

I've had 3 Gateway Notebooks, 7405GX, MX6447, MX6453, to date no problems with cracking hinges are anything else for that matter, all work great and all are still being used the 7405GX I sold to my Roomate, and he LOVES IT........

Epoxy works great, just in case you get cracks....

Okay. I've just about had it with this company. My next laptop will be a Hewlett-Packard. I've sent it in a total of three times now. The first time, it was replaced, although with the same bad hinges. The second time, they replaced the whole thing, including a different screen. The third time, they said they replaced it, but didn't do anything at all because I made a mark on the hinge and it was still there when I got it back. Now, the crack is expanding, so I called about it again, and they said there was nothing else they could do because they replaced it last time, even though they really didn't. They said I could pay ~$170 to have it repaired, but why should I do that when it was obviously a manufacturing flaw?

I have a old 7405GX it has (both hinges) that are craked now, I dead pixel, and a lot of missing screws (which I have all the screws) but not sure exactly if they are in the right holes (got about 10 tiny screws left, and I have NO Idea where they even go, but for $170+ a new LCD screen & cover from GATEWAY that's not bad at all, don't know if they will do all of that for me for $170, but if they can, I'll jump on that VERY FAST maybe I should call them and find out how much it will cost me?

Well, my laptop is fresh out of all of the warranties and, for the first time after 3 or so years, it appears to have started developing 2 small cracks in the hinge. This might also be due to the pretty significant play which I have yet to fix.
Since I'm taking apart my screen to fix the play and also the flicker issue, can you guys tell me if these cracks are something that can be just glued, or do I have to replace the screen shell?

sure, loads of people have glued along the crack, would look ugly if u r not careful, but work

cheers ...

I know this is an old thread, but I have had one of my hinges crack completely off. The metal just snapped form being loose and opening and closing it. I did surgery and fixed it with a steal piece I cut with a dremel tool and then screwed back on. I also covered the cracked plastic covers with plumber epoxy. It seems to be holding.

So if the plastic trim cracks off completely, there is nothing to hold in place the rest of the monitor's shell, meaning that the hinge is forfeit and you're left with one holding the LCD?

No, the plastic casing that cracks doesn't hold the lcd on. It does hold some nuts for the screws though. And those may come loose, which causes the wooble, which lead to the metal fatiguing and cracking.

Hello,

This is an old post but the problem still goes on. I wonder if Emachines is still replacing the defective hinges? and if so many people complained, no recall has be done for the defective parts.
I have a M5405 and my right hinge is completely gone, first I noticed the cracked hinge and I thought it will be more of a cosmetic problem, but because of the use, it cause stress failure and the plastic started to fall apart....I can not find parts to fix the problem.
The laptop has worked perfectly and had no problems with anything.
Any help?

Thanks!

At this moment, there is still no change to the decision of hinges replacement. Contact Gateway/Acer/eMachines, state your issue and get (hopefully) your hinges fixed.

Good lucks.

amazing, and still all this time later my hinges arent cracked

then again the hinge cover isnt even attached anymore because the power button plastics broke (and that was the only way to get it to turn on without buying a new hinge cover) so if its not one thing its another!

Got my Gateway MX7515 about a year and a half ago, and have the same problem. Started with the plastic hinge cracking, and eventually falling off, then my screen got really wobbly and flickered occasionally. Yesterday, I got a PC tool kit and immediately took the bezel off the LCD screen and, sure enough, the metal plate that is SUPPOSED to be attached by the two screws on the left hinge is broken and gone. Question is, what do I do now? I'll try calling Gateway, but for all I know, this is too old a model for them to deal with. If that doesn't work, I might try what the other fella did and just weld a new plate on. I've been looking for replacement parts online and I have no problem replacing it myself, but no luck finding one.

I'll let you guys know if I have any luck with Gateway.

I would also like to know if the problem was ever fixed or if they just provided new plastic that would crack again. I noticed my M6811 has not cracked again, but I am very carful with it.

problem was from an error in the plastics manufacturing causing the hinges to be too small. once they corrected it the new plastic never had the problem.
