well, at least you got a response - I also sent them an e-mail and I just got some junky automated e-mail thanking me for my concern and extending their "compassion" to my problem i.e. nothing. I really doubt that e-mails will lead to something cause I guess they have this theory of "forgotten pencils on keyboard" being the actual cause of the problem which is to say that it is the user's fault and not a design flaw from eMachines.
I was thinking of getting the new M6811 but I may change my mind and get the new Acer Aspire 2025WLMi with Dothan processor, instead although it costs 500 or so more. At least with the Acer I will get almost as good a performance (very, very similar benchmarks) almost twice the battery life, and not to mention the 128MB Radeon 9700. The biggest plus, however, will be the all-metal (alluminum I think) cover of the Aspire and no such cheap plastic hinges. I am on a very thin budget but I am really getting to think of switching to Aspire.
What a pity that such a wonderful laptop gets problems like that - it may be a bargain of a laptop but it still costs 1400-1500 bucks which is way too much for users to put up with faulty products.

I am not sure why didn't you listened to that techy's "advise" - if BB can play around with you try to get even. Anyway, the HD of the M68xx takes just one screw to take care of and you are done.
If you purchased a new M6809 you could have even returned the broken-hinge one with the reciept of the new one - you won't believe how careless those guys at the return center are. I have seen this being done several times and it always seems to work, although I am a bit "scared" to try it myself. But this is probably for more adventurous minds.

My Best Buy was very helpful with the cracked hinge. I had the extra BB warranty. The tech guy even checked it for bad pixels.

As someone else has mentioned, the repair for eMachines is considered "DEVO", which means that BB has a deal with eMachines to just swap out the machine. I assume that means all BB's and not just mine. They also told me that the "DEVO" status can change at any time, so that's why I didn't wait. They would have allowed me to swap out my machine for any comparably priced unit. I only had to pay the difference in price in the units. My warranty was already enough to cover the more expensive unit.

I am very picky when it comes to things like this, so this kind of thing really bugs me. To others, it's no big deal. If this one breaks, I'll make sure to pick out something different, if that's allowed at that time.

My m6805 hinge is also starting to crack. this sux...Will emachines fix the problem if you call them about it?

In response to the previous thread, I called eMachines Tech Support on my cracked hingle. I told them I had the unit for only a month and did not abuse or drop it in any way, shape or form. So the tech guy issued me an RMA and within a few days I received the packaging necessary to mail the laptop back to their service center. After a few more days I received it back with a new LCD shell.

That's good to hear and all, but that isn't a solution. If they aren't changing the part/mfg. of it, then it's bound to happen again. I think it might be worth waiting on a more permanent fix. Would hate to send it back in 1,2 or more times for the same problem. But on the bright side, good to see they are fixing the problem.

I was so mad when I left, I really didn't feel like going back into the store to go through the hastle. Of course now it is too late since they don't have any on the foor. I also have a problem buying a new one and returning the old one. I tried to tell them that it is one screw and it isn't hard but that is not their policy. That is fine, I missed my window to get one replaced so I will probably get this "fixed" and hope it happens again.

I wish my BB was as helpful. I heard them saying the term "DEVO" as well. They never gave me an option to swap it out for any comparably priced unit even when I asked. I will ask again when I take it in to get fixed, if the same guy is there that was so helpful , I will certainly try to speak to someone else. This laptop has been nothing but problems shortly after I got it, of course it didn't start having problems until after the return policy was up.

I have a feeling that EVERY hinge on the m680X series is going to crack after time. Definately a manufacturing flaw. I guess we're all just going to have to wait to see if emachines issues some sort of recall or not. I'll tell you this though, if emachines does nothing about it, I would never again buy another emachines product.

Just got off the phone with eMachines tech support myself. They are "aware" of the issue, but they consider it "cosmetic" damage and will not cover it under warranty. Oh well. I guess those of you with Best Buy's ESP will probably have better luck in getting a new one.

Has anyone had any luck with epoxy or some other glue? The crack itsself isn't *THAT* bad. It is more of a blame issue. It wasn't our fault so we should get it fixed for free. Still, we are all smart. We should come up with alternatives.
We will only have "luck" until eMachines tells BB to stop swapping just for the crack. It sounds like eMachines still doesn't have a consistent inhouse policy regarding this since it appears it depends on who you get on the phone at eMachines.

ok. I just contacted emachines customer service and spoke to mike about my cracked hinge problem. He referred me to the corporate number and I spoke to a gentleman there. He told me that emachines has received numerous complaints about this problem and are working on a solution for it. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel for all of us. Anyone who has a cracked hinge and has not contacted emachines, I definately recommend you do so. The gentleman took down my information and said he'd be contacting me soon to inform me of emachines solution to this problem.

yea right.
Sager has the same problem with the 5690. They get the generic case from clevo. Once you're so far down the line in production, they will NOT alter the case design. It would cost the company more to fix it, than to lose customers. Sorry.
The only way to fix this is to loosen the hinges, but once the crack is there, it's too late.

Well I just got off the phone with emachines tech support and spoke with Tech "john" and he told me he had not heard of the problem, sending me a return box and gave me an RMA number. Said I should have it back in a week.

Bloodgrove99:

What is the number for the corporate office? My tech just asked her superviser who said that it was only "cosmetic" and not to do anything, then they gave me a number to order a new part.

[quote=IrisIth]I took my notebook back to best buy 31 days after purchase, and they exchanged it for a new one. This 6809 is slightly different from my old one. It has a Fn + F1 key to turn off the status LED's and a different DVD burner. The burner tray doesn't feel as strong. Its a little looser and the CD's seem like they rub against something when sliding in. One good point is that the DVD seems to be quieter. This is my third M6809, and I hope its my last.QUOTE]

Hmm, I just exchanged my notebook, and I went from the newer revision with the LED turnoff and different DVD drive to the older one

The number to the "corporate office" is 1-801-401-1199

does anybody know how and when they would call like a recall....since it is kinda defective....even though its costmetic...?? since i think its cuz of the heat vent...it gets really warm.......
I'd say recalls are for defective items that could cause physical harm. You might as well forget it, especially if it's deemed "cosmetic."
